Ukrainian soldier Kostyantyn is a renowned chef who has cooked in Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe for years. Now he's running an army field kitchen in the Donetsk region, feeding troops. He creates impressive menus for the entire 22nd Brigade while fighting off an epic mouse population boom.

I can't use simple words to explain how much warm food means to a soldier, so let me tell you a story. I was counter-specops, in the north of Sweden. During the winter, we had literal 20 minutes of twilight and the rest 23 hours and 40 minutes was darkness. It was -27c and the forest was so dark, lonely and deep. You'd walk through the forest that was like a looming black dream, somehow far darker than the starry sky above you. Your weapon was cold, so cold, worse than even the snow or ice. Hours of physical labour would go by and it all felt like a weird dream, your fingers lacking feeling from the chill, your toes the same, everything felt numbed as you moved things around without the feeling of touch. But once per day we'd take out our personal tin-kitchen, boil some snow under a dark-blue flame, and pour it into a freeze-dried food-bag. Those 20 minutes, when you would place your hands around the warm bag, those 20 minutes where you would put your face above the opening of it as warm food-smelling mist poured out of the bag. Those few minutes, where your fingers suddenly *felt* and felt warmth, felt alive. Those 20 minutes kept you sane, reminded you that you're not just an automaton. Those minutes reminded you that you were alive. That was in peaceful Sweden, in the cold for sure but far away from war. I can't imagine how much it means for Ukrainian soldiers to get good grub on the frontline. Slava.

I don't think this is the flex you think it is, cause that sounds fuckin horrible, especially if its in peacetime! I personally think everyone in the military is a idiot, cause if no one was allowed to build a army, then all these "wars" would just be two idiots in a field throwing rocks at each other. y'all are beyond dumb imo.

It might be a logistics issue. There are Ukranian MREs, but it's reasonable to save those for troops during ongoing missions. Thus, extensive use of field kitchen is made wherever possible - and most journalists will not be where actual fighting is going on.

What a super great story! 💙 💛 Napoleon said: "an army marches on its stomach" Morale is powerful. Call good food the morale meal. Gives soldiers a sense of comfort. Soldiers can't be fed on words alone. No wonder Russians are often striking out. Their rations are sometimes years old.😖 Even the mice are cute...gives the cats 🐈 something to chase. 💙💛😊💙💛

Good chefs are all logistics experts. The battle they fight daily in kitchen it to put a large amount of quality food on the table. From ingredients to cooking to service to table, each step is a potential vulurability in supply chain that can bring down the dining service if gone wrong. Therefore, I do not feel surprised to see this chef on battlefield. Perhaps he is the most qualified to bring warm food to soldiers' empty stomach.
