Ukrainian Troops Get Morale Boost As M777 Howitzers Make An Impact

The Ukrainian military has started to actively use the 155-millimeter howitzer M777, which the United States handed over to Ukraine. The long-range artillery has already made an impact during the exchange of fire with Russian forces in eastern Ukraine. RFE/RL's correspondent Maryan Kushnir visited Ukrainian frontline positions on June 6 and talked to soldiers fighting Russian troops in the Donetsk region.

They won't. They've been losing ground since the Russians reformed their strategies to their old way of mass artillery barrages to weaken and demoralize before the troops roll in. Theyve already lost. It'd be better to save the remaining men of multiple generations as opposed to eradicating multiple generations of Ukrainian men. But I love humanity, you clearly just hate Russia and don't care how many Ukrainians are sent to an early grave. Ukraines not even a real country. Soviets molded it from multiple other countries. It never had a chance long term.

You know that Zelensky imprisoned his main political opponent, banned all opposition parties and nationalized all news media in to state media. Civilians that speak out against the government are imprisoned for 15 years. It is the furthest thing from a democracy, born from an armed takeover by western Ukrainian extremists like right sector and svoboda and it was orchestrated by Victoria Nuland and her neocon pals. Btw, Ukraine is ranked even more corrupt than Russia by transparency international. Just wanted bring reality to the picture.

I saw an interview with a US artillery officer who said that when the Ukrainians came for training on the 777, almost immediately they thought of ways to adapt the 777s to make them more effective for use in their specific situations. He said, "They thought of things we never heard of. It was nice of them to show us how to use our equipment." He was laughing, but he was really impressed with those Ukrainian warriors!

Maybe not directly related, but it reminds me of something that's bothered me for a while. There's been a lot of condescension toward Ukraine from a lot of "experts" commenting on the war. See how many still seem to refuse to acknowledge that Ukraine could actually win, no matter how well they do. I think that also explains some of the reluctance to send more aid more quickly. See the delusional calls from the likes of Kissinger for Ukraine to achieve peace by surrendering some of their territory to Putin (as if Putin could be trusted to keep any treaty negotiated). Ukraine isn't supposed to actually win. Everyone expected it to be quickly subjugated and then drain Russia in a long insurgency. But actually winning a conventional war with Russia? Unthinkable. Part of it may be a justifiable fear of escalation with Russia, and some of it may just be self-interest, but I think a good bit of it is ultimately pride. Russia was supposed to be America's arch enemy, a peer opponent. The idea that a smaller country like Ukraine could seriously challenge, maybe even beat them, wounds the pride of many American "experts", so they can't admit that they so underestimated Ukraine (and overestimated Russia).

I am really happy we sent these howitzers over to the Ukrainian Army. It is nice to see they are doing good work with them. But I hope many more howitzers will be sent, particularly the M109 Paladin self-propelled 155mm howitzer. Being highly mobile is something you want in an artillery war. Self-propelled guns are much more survivable than towed guns, which take longer to set up and to move. The M109 will let Ukraine shoot and then scoot.

I remember a month or two ago when the U.S. started to give the Ukraine military a lot of weapons, someone from the Pentagon pointed out that they gave the Ukraine military some counter battery radar which were normally used separately. They said the Ukrainians found out how they could link all the radars together wirelessly and created an entire corridor of the specialized radar and told the Americans what they did. The Americans then wanted to know how they did it! I'm sure if you google the story you'll find out what I'm referring to because this is all coming from my memory. But the Ukrainians what I like about them is that they're just grateful for any assistance they receive and do their best to use it.

@Alternative Headlines It was obvious sarcasm, applying human emotions to inanimate objects. It's a shame that people are being killed. It was Russia who invaded Ukraine and they are reaping the whirlwind now. I hate the military- industrial complex with a passion, yet I cannot side with the invader. War and killing is a mortal- sin against all of the Teachings of Christ. I pray this war ends soon, I do not pray for one side to eliminate the other. War is caused by coveting that which does not belong to someone, for gold and land. All the best to you.

Ukraine nazzi leaders been elected by deep state pushing for regime to wipe out 90 % of population, because they decided to believe we have no rights to live freely to think freely. Ukraine nazzi agenda was ready to release biological weapons against Russians to wipe them out, because they are against New world order and it's superpower nation. The only way to defeat this country was by biological weapons and Putin knew about their plans. So he acted in last minute to destroy underground labs and to free captured children and believe me there was thousands of them . Russian soldiers are not destroying cities or killing civilians, but this group of Ukraine nazzi soldiers to blame on Putin how cruel he is , so they can collect money and weapons from other countries to hide their agenda and crimes. Putin is liberating Ukraine people from this bondage in their own country. They been lied to , just like American citizens. Bidens, Obamas. Clinton's, Bush family and others like Soros and rest of master elites have a part in Ukraine where they been building facilities, underground labs to even clone animals and making biological weapons for certain DNA types of slovenian people to be wiped out from created biological viruses and more . This is only scratch of what else Russians took over and what they found there in Ukraine. It all will be released to public around the world to wake people up, what deep state nest in Ukraine been planning against humanity. U my friend stop watching corrupted news, whose owners are deep state to release only news to public, what they want u to believe. Not quite, as stated above. The M777 is an American redesign/reengineering and refinement of an earlier Vickers light howitzer with most of its parts, including its tube (fabricated at a US arsenal), manufactured in the US. It is also completed in the US. BAE has a history of buying manufacturers. They bought the American subsidiary in 2005 which reengineered this piece so it is not under license, it is produced by an American subsidiary of BAE. The Excalibur was also developed in the States and was manufactured for BAE by the Raytheon missiles division out of Tucson, Arizona and has been used operationally by US forces.

They are smart and very adaptive. If Ukraine wanted to start it’s own military alliance, NATO should consider themselves lucky to get an invite. I think they’d need to improve to be allowed to join !

They've always been very intelligent. The USSR depended on them a lot for the development of their defense industry. Even the Moskva, the Russian flagship was Ukrainian.

They are highly motivated. They are fighting to save their families and friends. Not to say that they aren't impressive because they are very impressive.

I love the Hogs as much as anyone, but without air supremacy and given the number of MANPADS and other SAM systems on the Russian side, they'd be slaughtered in Ukraine right now. The Ukrainians also don't have people trained in maintaining their engines, electronics, or weapons, or the equipment and infrastructure to operate Western jets. The actual airplanes are one part of a system. It takes hundreds of highly-trained people and literally tons of specialized equipment to make them work.

@Uncle Sam Physically, most Soviet era weapons systems are very good, very powerful; they're just not very modern or accurate. As a retired US Col. once put it, if he was sent to an unknown Alien planet on a one-way trip and he could only choose the M16/M4 or the AK-47, he'd choose the latter. As he said it, the AK-47 isn't as accurate or refined; but its simplicity, reliability, and durability means you could depend on it for longer. Russia's current top end weapons systems also are a corollary of their AK-47. A retired Russian commander once gave a lecture to Russian officers and he said in a conventional war against the US, he thought the US could take out most Russian long range systems within days, because from his view, operating on glimpses he was able to glean through Russian intel, the US's long range precision weapons were just much more reliable, so much better. Again, that's the view of a retired Russian commander who spent his entire adult life coming up with ways to effectively counter the US and Western allies, in weapons technologies.

I feel for the warriors fighting the Orcs! They are at it nonstop and don’t get family time/proper meal. Time to grieve for a loved one. But the Ukrainian people will go down in history as the nation that stood up to and defeated Russia. Slava Ukraini!
