From 'The Hollywood Revue of 1929', This short clip features the talented musical stylings of Cliff Edwards, (Ukulele Ike) performing "Nobody But You"
One of my personal favorite performances of the film.
He is an absolute joy to listen too. :)
Hope you'll enjoy this as much as I do!
Be sure to watch in the highest quality available.

A wonderful example not only of Cliff Edwards, but of early sound film making. One camera that couldn't move (it was in a fixed position within a soundproof booth so the noise of the camera wouldn't be recorded), one microphone overhead in a fixed position, everything sung and played LIVE in real time. You'll notice that Edwards never budges, except to enter and exit, and the chorus behind makes no noise when he's performing. And enjoy the primitive choreography when the chorus finally does dance!

I've been listening to recordings of jazz and pop from the 1920s-1930s from an old radio show in New York called The Big Broadcast, hosted by Rich Conaty. A great resource for this kind of talent.

What a talent Cliff Edwards was. How sad he was forgotten in his later years. Thank you for the video clip.

(i think i got them right) nobody but you performed by Cliff Edwards from "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" Some folks want a doctor when they're out of sorts Some folks want a lot of fun and some are fond of sports But all I want, sweetheart is only you I don't want a tonic I want no change of air I'll find heaven any place as long as you are there Sweetheart, just you Sweetheart, you'll do Who can bring the breath of spring Who can make the songbirds sing Nobody - nobody but you Who can brighten darkest skies Who can dry my tear-dimmed eyes Nobody - nobody but you And when I'm lonely and weary and everything seem wrong Who is the only thats cheery and puts the gladness in my song Who can bring the sunshine where there's been darkness and despair Nobody - nobody but you

Will Grove-White (of the UOGB) rates Cliff Edwards as his uke hero. He writes about him in his excellent book 'Get plucky with the ukulele'.

Yes, the UOGB gang is truly astounding - going to a concert is on my bucket list! Will's 'Get Plucky' book was reprinted by Hachette in 2017, but they have changed the name to "Ukulele for Beginners".

Is this a Vitaphone or sound on film recording?
@Arthur_McGowan
@Arthur_McGowan 6 жыл бұрын
Joe Williston Western Electric sound-on-disc. Same as Vitaphone, but only Warners' and First National used that name. From the very beginning, Warners' recorded louder and clearer than MGM. Note how the chorus is off-center? Because the film was copied using an aperture for sound-on-film.

@waldolydecker8118
@waldolydecker8118 3 жыл бұрын
Negative. Tiny Tim wasn't even born in 1929, so this has absolutely nothing to do with him. What he's actually mimicking here are the ubiquitous jazz scat riffs of the time that were sang by many and instrumentally were voiced in the brass section of big bands, most famously by Duke Ellington during 1920's Cotton Club tenure. The song is delivered in the standard "sweet and hot" approach - 'sweet,' delivered plain as originally written, and 'hot,' delivered in an up-tempo jazz-like approach.
