That tip about not softening the callouses on the left hand...that never occurred to me! I always wondered why I'd get these rockin' good callouses and then every few weeks it feels like I'm starting all over again. Ha! Thanks!

Excellent! I'm a beginner and just filed my LH nails even shorter after seeing yours. That should help now... hurts, but I have been applying "Rock Tips", a brush on liquid callus formula and much less painful. Thank you and I really enjoy your channel!

Thanks Linda! Glad to hear the callus formula is helping. Try to play a bit every day and as your calluses develop the fingertip pain/sensitivity will decrease 😊

Hiya Lara, thanks very much for another great video. Which fingers on the left hand do I assign to which frets please? Thanks very much. XX
@LaraMarkowitzMusic
@LaraMarkowitzMusic Жыл бұрын
Hi David, glad you found this helpful! Fret hand finger placement will vary depending on the chord shape, other chords in the song, and your personal preference. Often times there are multiple ways to play a chord and the best option will make for the easiest transition from the preceding chord and to the following chord. There are also many chords that can be played barred or not. Some people find barre chords easier and some don't. This applies to fingerstyle playing as well...no general finger assignments, but rather what makes for the smoothest transition between notes/chords. In my tutorials I cover the chord shapes that I use in the chord progression for a song as well as the fret hand fingering that I use for fingerstyle arrangements. There are many options and I encourage you to experiment with it as your preference on chord shapes and finger placement may be different than mine. Thanks for the question! 😊

thank i was looking for this cause i'm getting bad habits. One question tho, i've bad left hand position cause i support the neck with the crook between thumb and index finger. If i want to use your lemon technique, i've nothing left to hold the neck, the thumb behind the neck isnt enough and i dont have strap. how to hold the ukulele like this ? I tried with pressure on the body with right arm but then its hard to finger pick
@LaraMarkowitzMusic
@LaraMarkowitzMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hank, I went through the same struggle when I first started playing. For me, getting a strap made all the difference! I agree that without a strap it's hard to use the lemon technique because your left hand needs to help hold the uke. I would highly recommend getting a strap.

Thanks for the tips. My nails are cut so short, there is barely any white showing, but still, when I press the string, my nail hits the fretboard. I hardly have any fleshy fingertip showing below the nail. Will developing callouses help with short fingertips? Although, I don't see how I can develop them if I can't fret the strings in the first place. I've been trying to play for two years now. Very frustrating!
@LaraMarkowitzMusic
@LaraMarkowitzMusic 8 ай бұрын
I think you're right that if you can't fret the strings you won't be able to develop callouses. I'm sorry that this is so frustrating 😕

You're most welcome Paula. What you're experiencing is common. I encourage you to rest your fingertips when they hurt and practice when you can. Even 5 minutes a day leads to improvement, and it will get easier (and less painful) with practice 😊

Nice tips! I still don't know how to change chords while my uke dangles freely with only the wedge of it between my right arm and my body. The neck is heavy and falls when I don't have my left hand cradle the neck. Why doesn't anyone mention this?

I talk about this in my video on how to hold your uke: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5eEaZliuJjHgKM.html. I recommend getting a strap - I've found that it makes a huge difference!

This is a great tutorial, but it is not for left handed players as your title suggest !
@LaraMarkowitzMusic
@LaraMarkowitzMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your feedback! Actually the title of the video is "Left Hand Technique" and the thumbnail is "Left Hand Ukulele Tips". I feel that these accurately represent the topic of this video as it's all about the left hand. There's no mention of left handed players but I can see how one may jump to that assumption. I also have a video on "Right Hand Ukulele Tips" so the titles help to distinguish one video from the other. Thanks for watching and I hope you find these tips helpful 😊

@@LaraMarkowitzMusic FYI : I typed " Beginners left handed ukulele lesson" in the KZfaq search and this video was at the top of the list! I play guitar and have never had anybody say that they are giving me (a right handed player ) instructions for my left hand! Sorry you can't see that Lara. Your video should be titled "10 Essential Tips - Beginner Lesson and Tutorial" The right handed player is implied, whom uses the left hand to fret the ukulele and right hand to pick/strum.

Hi Doug, thanks for the question. This video is "Left Hand Technique", not Left-Handed Technique. There are techniques specific to the right and left hand which is why I created this video as well as my Right Hand Technique lesson. If you're playing left handed then you can apply the tips in this video to your right hand (fret hand). Thanks for watching and I hope you find these tips helpful 😊
