Thanks Rachel. I've always wondered why a bass player plugs into an amp then uses headphones to play. Why not just play the bass (especially an acoustic bass) without the amp? Now I understand. Setting the tone correctly means everything to enhancing the sound and enjoyment of playing the bass.

It's all about the tone Tobias ;-) Yep, even with headphones or super low volume I prefer to be plugged in.

Oh, this is so good! The part about the tone controls was particularly helpful! I never really understood how to use them effectively. Your demonstrations of using the bass and treble controls all up, all down, etc. were so perfect to hear the differences. Thank you for all this!

You haven't mentioned finger and palm muting and also with rubber strings a felt and or a leather plectrum work better that plastic or nylon .(by the way before your tongue drum video I'd just ordered a small purple one which arrived today and it sounds gorgeous.

Trying to keep it very simple for this one, I will definitely be looking at picks and plectrums and also various right hand techniques in the future. Just never enough hours in the day. Thanks for helping Alan on another comment too, much appreciated.

Very glad it helped Cate. I actually bought the camera for overhead shots for the effects pedals but it's not great for that but I thought I'd have a go at strapping it to the uke and have to say, quite impressed with the shot. Even better knowing it helped so I'll use it again if I can. :-)

True confession: I'm more than a bit obsessive about tuning, and now you've added logs to the flame! LOL! Oh, and nails are a struggle, for sure. I play banjo with a longer nail on my middle finger for striking down on the strings clawhammer style. I've been searching for picks to use for clawhammer banjo and am experimenting with some now. My goal is to be able to play my U-bass without that click sound from my middle digit. Also, and most importantly: Barefaced mini rig!! Oh, it sounds amazing!! Looking forward to hearing more. p.s. My fret wrap is on the way. 8^)

The nails thing is a tricky one, sometimes I really loathe cutting my nails but then it clicks.................. The Barefaced stuff truely is stunning, fan sound and as light as a feather, I've been dreaming of this combo for years! Have to ask, what colour fret wrap, obviously important!

@@UkuleleWales Don't hate on me, but I chose black. First, there were too many color choices! I could NOT decide. Also, my Kala Journeyman U-Bass is black, so I thought, "Quit floating your cursor over all the colors and just go with black." I can't tell you how relieved I was when it was over and ordered. LOL!!

Well done Rachel. I've cut my fingernails and half my problems have been solved. All I need to do now is figure out why the E string is quieter than the other three. As it's like this on the Kala Journeyman and the Mahalo solid body, I guess it's the amp settings. Too many wretched knobs! Fender Rumble 100 - Gain, Drive, Level, Bass, Low Mid, High Mid, Treble, Master, Bright, Contour, Vintage.

Could be uneven pressure if it's a piezoelectric pick up (could be the saddle is curved slightly under the quiet string)

Hi Alan, it might be the amp settings as it's both instruments. It could also be a case of applying firm pressure on the string and saddle (bass bot plaugged in), this sometimes fixes it as William ags also mentioned. I can't remember, are you in the Ubass Freaks FB group - there is some really good advice about the pick ups in there too. Just checking, is it a bass amp?

Heo Rachel. Thanks for another informative video. I have recently fitted round wound strings to one of my solid body u-basses. I find I get an audible clicking sound as the strings contact the frets. This is very annoying as I didn't have a problem with the Aquila Black strings that were on it previously. Can you advise me how I can eliminate this clicking noise. Regards. Gary.

Hi Gary, what's the action like on it. It tends to be quite high with my rubber strings which isn't a problem but it may be a little high for the round wounds. Another thought (but probably not), is it definitely the frets cause the noise? I somtime find if my nails are a little longer than normal, they can cause a clicky noise too.

Great question, sorry for not being clearer. Generally I mean that the tone knobs or EQ settings are set to the middle ie. not more bass or treble, the same.

Can you explain the differences, pros and cons between fretted and frettless?

Hi Rebecca, in short - fretless you can make sound more like an upright but you really need to listen to your tuning. Fretted, easier to get notes in tune. I've done a bit of a comparison here. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mtuPjah4ltG4p6c.html

Part of the problem that I've been having with learning bass is that I'm primarily a finger picker on guitar, so the nails on my right hand are a little longer. Thinking I should probably just move to a felt pick for the bass. Thoughts on picks for basses? (Also, thanks for the video.)

Ooooph, picks and bass - that's some dark places! LOL Only joking. Personally I only ever use a pick if I have got sore fingers but I can completely understand the need for the nails. I'm laughing, as a kid I used to glue actual felt material onto picks for my bass as all felt hadn't been invented. Stiff leather, felt, even stubby nylon, you may have to find your tone! ;-)

Yes, where you place your finger can certainly make buzzing if it is not right.
