Hi man, don’t see this comment as hate, just trying to help! They do get air, which isn’t strange, they have lungs and they also have gills so they sometimes choose to get air at the surface, Not weird at all! The lights are also kind of unnatural to the axo’s. They live in murky lakes in Mexico, so they don’t like lights at all! Try to put a PVC-pipe in there, you would see that the axolotl spent more time in the pipe then in the light! :) Axolotls don’t see. They are practically blind! They use their sense of movement to eat. You can see this when you put your hand in the tank, the axolotl would start to react to the movements in the water. A good food could be earthworms. Don’t feed them something else like crickets ( way to hard of a shell ). In one year, your axolotl should be pretty close to FULLY grown. ( if you feed them good foods ). Have owned them over 15 years know! Love the tank, once again, not hate, just trying to learn you something. I have been working and studying axolotls since I was 5, so I know a thing or two! :)

Hi thanks for the comment! Like I said I am not an expert. I have looked into it and you're correct they do have both lungs and gills which is amazing! Thanks! 😁 I understand what you're saying about lighting. Which is why I mentioned to beginners to use no lighting or dim lighting. In my case I am using dim lighting, this is to keep my live plants alive, the plants pull nitrate from the water, increase oxygen content in the water and benefit the water quality. Water quality to me is very important. As I'm using dim lighting I have provided a cave which I made using driftwood and rock and Toothless can use the dark areas of thick plants if needed (used to have floating plants to keep the whole tank dimmer but Toothless ate them 😂) . I also recommend to viewers to do their own research on this matter. But like I said in my video Toothless very rarely uses his dark cave and spend almost all his time out in the open under the light and I am yet to see him become stressed by this. If he seemed stressed I would make a change. I hope your axolotls are well! Thanks 👍👍👍

Most are grown emersed from Tropica: Limnophila sessiflora Cryptocoryne wendtii green Hygrophila siamensis 53b Java moss (taxaphillium barberi) Spiky moss I have also used frogbit and duckweed in the past but they end up as a snack 😂. Please excuse any spelling mistake of the plants 😂

Alasdair Aquatics Thanks for the list! Can’t wait for the next video on your little beast! If you don’t mind giving live fish, you should try putting a few guppies in there! The axolotls like to hunt for their food and a fresh little fish always tastes good to them! ;) make sure not to go bigger then Guppies/mollies, otherwise the axolotl gets picked on, just like you mentioned! :)

I would try my best to keep it below 18 degree celcius, which is pretty easy here in the UK 😂. 🤔 I've never had issues with growing pothos in cold or tropical temperatures. Maybe start with a cutting and allowing it to root in the water, that what I did with this setup. Hope that helps! Good luck 👍

Toothless is a melanoid HOWEVER he’s a melanoid wild type in my opinion because he isn’t fully hyperpigmentated he has freckles of various colors like wild types do he just isn’t as light colored. My albino bred with my melanoid and had babies identical to toothless. And just to cover all 4 types a lucistic is basically an albino with black eyes they’re the most common axolotl in the pet hobby (also out there are yellow, a soft brown color, and chimera where they’re split down the middle black and white and many others). Frankie’s axolotls on KZfaq is super informative if you’re interested in the water dragon way of life.

Hi there, unfortunately I didn't film the setup of this axolotl tank when I planted it. However I followed the normal method of setting up a planted fish tank which my channel features a lot about if you are interested. With this axolotl tank I placed some plastic light diffuser to keep the bottom of the tank safe from the rocks. I then added a layer of fine sand and planted the plant roots straight into it. I used easy low demanding plants such as Limnophilia, java fern, anubias, java moss and some crypts. Other than that I add a small amount of liquid fertiliser every few days and the tank is still going strong almost a year later! I hope that helps. Thanks for watching👍

what type of maintenance do they need when it comes to water changes, filters, pH, etc, and how often?
@alasdairaquatics
@alasdairaquatics 3 жыл бұрын
They definitely need a filter with cycled filter media, although they dont like strong flow. Sand or bare bottom are best because they can choke on gravel. They are a cold water species. Ensure ammonia and nitrite are always kept at 0. I would not let nitrates go above 20. My maintenance was a 50% water change weekly. My pH sat around 7.4. Hope that helps! They are great animals! 👍

Hi i know this video is a year old! But how to keep your plants green and from not melting? i've read fertilizers are poisonus to axolotls because of the iron?
@alasdairaquatics
@alasdairaquatics 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the toxicity of iron to axolotls, either way it's a trace element in our tap water for most countries. I ended up rarely adding fertilizer to this tank as toothless created a fair amount of waste(nitrogen) and then my water changes replaced the trace elements which the plants were using up. Also these were very easy and hardy plants so I didn't worry too much about their care as they thrive in almost any aquarium from my experience. The plants I used were anubias, microsorum, limnophila, cryptocoryne wendtii and moss. Bare in mind lots of plants melt when first added to an aquarium as they are adjusting to new water parameters, so if it's early on and you see melting I wouldn't be too alarmed, the same goes for plants grown emersed. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Ey up! Great video. I was just wondering whether you know the footprint of that aquarium? I am trying to work out whether a 70 litre ( ~ 15 gallon ), with a 50 L x 40 W footprint might be adequate for a single juvenile axi.
@alasdairaquatics
@alasdairaquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Some sites recommend 10 gallon per juvenile but i think 15/20 gallons is better. Just bare in mind they can grow up to a foot long when adult 😁. Sounds like you will need to upgrade in the future, they do grow pretty fast. Good luck with your axolotl endeavours! Thanks for watching! 👍

@alasdairaquatics
@alasdairaquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Different sites say different things. Personally I think that is enough water volume for two as it is roughly double the size of my tank. The main thing to consider is the footprint of the tank, you'll want a tank with a large area for the axolotls to walk around as they spend most of their time walking. Something long and wide rather than really tall. Also keep an eye out for aggression between them. Bigger is always better though! Have a look at other tank on youtube for ideas 😁 Hope that helps! Good luck! 👍

Salamanders aren’t just a single species, they are many many different species (axolotl’s included). Axolotl’s have evolved to remain in their larvae stage and don’t metamorphose into adult salamanders unless of stress. Ive read iodine can sometimes make them transition but at the cost of a much shorter lifespan.
