Watching old black and white movies is so Blair Waldorf coded. If you've always wanted to get into classic films, I'm compiled these recommendations for you as a starting point. Romance, comedy and thriller genres tend to be the easiest to get into, since they're easy to watch and have compelling plots (plus they usually have great costuming).

0:07 - 0:11 That was actually Katharine Hepburn's natural accent. She came from extreme wealth. Her parents were Blue-bloods from the North East. Her mother (also named Katharine) came from the Houghton family who owns Corning (a Multibillion dollar company), and her father was a Urologist. Both her parents learned the Transatlantic accent in school. Her parents spoke that way in the home, and Katharine Hepburn and her siblings grew up speaking that way.

How to Steal a Million with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole is a cute, witty romcom too. Recommend 😍

You compiled a good list. TCM was my favorite channel when I was in middle and high school. Mae West’s movies are also great for someone who wants to start watching the classics.

The hostess provides a helpful service to America by encouraging and providing an impetus for younger generations to sample an art form from earlier times, thereby gleaning some perspective on what times were like in the olden days and what people were enjoying on film back then. Nicely done and a skillfully edited program!

I too was a film student for awhile, but then I dropped out due to stress, because college. Regardless, as someone who loves film, I found these recommendations very useful. I too love a good aesthetic.

A few more 30’s and early 40’s movies that are must-sees are Arsenic and Old Lace, It Happened One Night, Blonde Bombshell, She Done Him Wrong, I’m No Angel, His Girl Friday. Dishonored Lady is 1947, so a bit late into the 40’s, but still an excellent Hedy Lamar movie

Yeah, I was gonna say, I'd replace Grace Kelly in The Holy Trinity with Katherine Hepburn. She became my favorite when I watched her films and read her biography as a young person.

6:10 I actually read billy wilders biography and he said that these rules made them better filmmakers. they couldn't show it, so I had to show other things that made the audience think of what they couldn't show. they had to figure out how to do it. he told a very good story in his book. would recommend to read

As a Ginger rogers and fred astair and marilyn fan i REALLY REALLY wanted to see what other oldies had amazing actors. This is the perfect video Also , i would recomend ANY rogers and astair duo movies. They have like 6 ( i think 9) and the chemistry is SO GOOD. they have a lot of dancing but you can skip them if it gets too long

Great recommendations! I've never watched much of Old Hollywood stuff apart from film noir, so I'm defo gonna give those flicks a try. I also think that The Seven Samurai makes for a perfect introduction into Japanese classics, maybe more so that Godzilla, as this movie is the grandmother of ALL heist movies made in Hollywood ever after. Americans watching it will notice all the tried and true tropes employed for decades later. I saw it for the first time when I was a pre-schooler (I live in Poland and back in the eighties our public TV might only have two channels, but they shown great stuff) and I've been in love with Japanese film ever since. If you wonder how the hell was a preschooler able to read subtitles, well...Polish TV didn't have them. They would make some dude called a "lector" read all the lines out with a flat delivery, muffling actors' voices down to background level :D . Also - young Toshiro Mifune was the hottest man on Earth, even when half naked and covered in mud. Or maybe especially then.

i've seen so many of these but somehow have never seen a katherine hepburn one. i need to fix that immediately because i just know i'd love her, too! i'll have to check out summertime because i went to venice a few months ago and was very ill and didn't get to explore & enjoy as much as i wanted. will gladly let the movie overwrite my vacay. singin' in the rain is god tier. one of my all-time favs. movie musicals are my way into oldies. :)

This is an awesome list! I added a few to my LB watch list. THANK YOU for mentioning To Catch a Thief. It’s such a hugely underrated Hitchcock movie. I wrote a long article about it on my Medium page. I think another movie that would fit in your list is “All That Heaven Allows.” Rock Hudson, who is arguably at his sexiest, stars alongside Jane Wyman, a widowed mother of two grown children. It’s a romance and a drama centering around the treatment of older women and how their romantic lives are perceived by the community, particularly with a younger man. It’s a beautiful Douglas Sirk film with amazing cinematography. It’s a yearly watch for Fall-winter for me as the film takes place over those seasons.
