One of the great things about this adventure is the start. The body of a dead hobgoblin killed by a crossbow trap holds open a secret door. This is great because it telegraphs the coming experience to the players. There will be traps, deadly ones. There will be secret doors. And there will be monsters.

The Lost City was the first module I ever bought and ran, so it is very special to me. It's my Keep on the Borderlands. We didn't know what were doing, got half the rules wrong, but what great fun it was and started me on this D&D journey that has gone on for 40 years. It remains among my all time favourites. I've run it a few times, most recently last year. Tom Moldvay managed to fit so much into a mere 32 pages.

"Lost City" was one of the first modules I bought with my own allowance money as a kid of like nine or ten. I never got to chance to ever actually run or play it, but it made a great coloring book! I went on to re-read it voraciously over the decades, and I'd say this and "Vault of the Drow" were the two modules that most influenced my preference for sandbox settings that lasts to this day.

I played The Lost City back in high school we used Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay rules. I know the GM had to add a lot to the module (especially the city), but I feel that to be true of most D&D modules: Good base buts needs some love and attention to really shine. Anyway, we had an absolute blast. I am looking to start a game with some new players and this video sold me on pitching Lost City to the group. Thanks for another great video.

Awesome video Professor! Loved all the cameos (and the call out to Capt., his videos on the Goodman Games version of this where what led me to buy it). I somehow missed this adventure back in the day when it first came out, I am sure I would have loved it had I found it. I have been running my son (who is almost 12) and a group of his friends through the 5e version and they have been enjoying it a lot. So far they are only on Tier 4, and on tiers 2 & 3 they also skipped over some things. They have made connections with the Magi (first faction they encountered) and the Brotherhood, but have yet to meet the Warrior Maidens. I have been making use of the factions they have met to help guide them on where to go through the factions asking them to complete tasks (such as mapping out the floor plan for Tier 4). Plan to use this a lot when they finally get to the lost city itself and start really learning more about what all is going on.

Wow. Excellent video. This one sets a new bar. I hope it wins some awards. Your production style involving close ups on well painted miniatures has become a signature. This is probably your best video so far. The miniatures looked great. The guest commentary was a nice touch. And there was a great mix between story description and “under the hood” dungeon mastering. I got to play this about 3 months ago for the first time. But we only played one 2.5 hour session. We only got to the stingbat encounter. Afterwards, the rest of the group complained that the rules sucked (i.e. Wah! It’s not 5e! It’s B/X D&D!), the adventure was boring, and that they weren’t going to play anymore. By comparison, the video illustrates these guys were clearly unimaginative impatient wankers who didn’t know what they were missing.

Great video! One of your best, PDM! I ran this adventure for my friends back in the late 1980's. They made it through all of the pyramid and the inverted pyramid, having the final battle with Zargon. They won the fight, but as I recall, one of the PCs perished. Never explored the underground city, but I've been thinking of revisiting the story again, as the heroes never learned they had to drop Zargon's horn in the underground volcano, so Zargon has since regenerated and returned to power. It may be time for a new group of adventurers to find the Lost City.

Super fun video! A fun and instructive story from the Professor that covers a whole campaign in less than a half hour? Guest appearances from other great channels to cover topics of their focus? Slick production that keeps the whole thing moving while also pacing it out appropriately? Yes, yes, yes! More of this, please! Also, free idea: some sort of collaboration for a campaign or setting where the Professor and other RPG channels take turns creating various elements. One person shares a portion like the environment, backstory, factions, etc. and then each video ends with an "over to you (name)" moment to intro the next creator who will say when that video will go live. End result: the rough outline of an original campaign or setting that DMs/GMs can run with to make it their own. I would watch!

I've run The Lost City many times over 35 years, and have the Goodman Games book too. There is a lot of room for DMs to put their own spin on things here, and I think I'll reskin the heck out of it next time I give it a go! :)

More videos like this please. I loved that several KZfaq creators were involved in this video. I loved the adventure recap with the minis, terrain, and animation. I loved the tips on how to run this adventure and others. Very well done!

Thanks. I'd love to do this every week but they take too much time. Once or twice a year for sure.

Started with Keep with friend. Lost City was the first real DnD, with an adult DM. Will never forget it. DM handed out characters on dot matrix print outs. All randomly generated by computer. My long time DnD friend ended up with a magic user with 1 hp, died on first encounter with the stirges. It was awesome and I learned how to play.

Outdid yourself here PDM. Tom was/is my fave adventure author and B4 in my top 2. Fantastic production, and watching it was a treat.

Nice work Professor and everyone. A couple of notes: at the beginning you mentioned that the module is more of a sword and sorcery style (which I totally agree on) but the later feeling is that you guys delivered more of an epic fantasy flavour. Also, four sessions feels like a considerable rush for a sandbox, so I just assume everyone, DM and players, kind of was "focused" to end the dungeon, right? All things considered, however, amazing job, hope to see more content like this one.

Great retelling of your groups mini-campaign in the Lost City. Enjoyed the guest appearances, but they did catch me by surprise. Twice I thought I had accidentally moved to different videos. It’s nice to see you all supporting each other and home brew D&D.

I played this back in the ;ate 80s, I think. We did ok for murder hobos, but moved on to something else after like 5 sessions(never got to the lost city). I ran this like 3-4 years ago(early covid) and converted it to The Fantasy Trip...They united the factions, then left to hit other campaign plots, with the idea they would return to help confront the Zargon faction...never made it back. It was a great starter story to suck in the players, though.

I think this is one of your best videos ever. Certainly my favorite. I admire how you've streamlined your mechanics and how you cater fairly to your players. It's an excellent example of thinking outside the box and adapting what'sgiven to what you want or need. When not concerned about time I usually have my players make skill or ability checks, even if roleplay or circumstance has already decided the issue, as an extreme result can still influence events. I find it to be a great opportunity for improvisation for me and/or the players and a lot of fun. Anyway, although I generally watch every video you create I would be very enthusiastic to see more like this or anything related to miniature painting and terrain creation. Thank you for this video.

Professor DM always makes great content, but this episode really went above and beyond. The amazing narration, the epic shots of the minis showcasing the encounters (with tags to where to get them), and guest appearances of some of my all time favorite youtubers!!! It was so good I lost track of time and was late to work XD

Omg, this adventure is perfect for one of my long running campaigns. Ive literally been hitting major writers block trying to figure out how to make it work. My campaign setting even makes heavy use of elder evils so Zargon is just an amazing fit, never heard of this classic adventure before, thanks!

I converted it over to PF2 and ran my party through it. I had the 1st five tiers above the city and the bottom 5 tiers below the city. It was great :) Edit: Just checked my notes, it took 1 year and a month of playing. 22 sessions that each lasted about 5 hours :) We only get to play about every 2 weeks but it was a lot of fun!

Great video! Watching it, I 've got some doubts and I must ask... did your players make their own map ? or did you provide them a "player's version" of the map? or none of these?
