Build the multi-functions soldering fume extractor from an old 120mm PC fan. This all-in-one design included a DC power forwarding hub, detachable magnetic hood, voltage display and easy access carbon filter bay.
I originally designed it to use with my DIY Makita soldering station ( • Making a Portable 2-in... ). So, I've included a built-in buck converter to make it accept a wider range of input voltage (up to 23 volts) and also capable of using a USB-C power delivery port input.
With a suitable power supply, you can also use it to power your portable soldering iron, like TS100.

As a professional electronic engineer of almost 50 years can I just say that this is arguably the BEST thought out, designed and implemented design for just about ANY electronic support tool/gadget/gizmo/device I have ever seen on KZfaq! I do wish more people would show complete projects including case, ancilliaries and thoughtful extras. I'm intrigued as to just how long you spent refining the design with all the extras? ABSOLUTELY GREAT PIECE OF WORK! I shall be constructing one of these ASAP but as my T12 iron uses the compact unit in an aluminium case with a suitable supply for the iron already and I very rarely use a soldering iron outdoors or where there is no mains I shall be modding my solder station case to use the internal supply. Other than that I can't see that I'll need to modify ANYTHING as you seem to have considered the lot! Nice one! 👍👍👍👍👍😁

Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate that you like my design. I just think about reducing the wire cluttering because of my tight workspace. The stationary soldering iron is not my option. So the one with a battery seems to be the best middle-ground solution. As well as this design, I just try to make use of what I currently have. I'm glad that you found it useful. I currently design a better pack for it but I still cannot find a way to make it compact enough. It's great to hear that you'll be constructing your own mobile soldering station. You will not regret it. it makes my life much easier without the main. Thanks again for your feedback, and happy making. 👍👍🍻🍻😀

It's garbage. You can't remove toxic solder fumes with a carbon filter. This is a fact. Enjoy the asthma.

One more make here ! I'm sanding it right now to make it nice and smooth. I'll get the screws tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don't have this USB C board yet and my display is about 3mm smaller, the width fits, just not quite the height, which doesn't bother me personally. Tomorrow I'll decide whether I'll paint it or not. But I have to say that the black fan looks very nice between the white PLA! In the next few days more pictures will follow on thingiverse! Thank you for sharing this great project and documenting it so well!❤

Thank you for sharing nice project. It would be nicer if the filter was installed in front of the fan. The fume mainly comes from vaporized flux whose residue is very sticky. If the fan directly inhales fume from flux long time, the fan will be contaminated by flux residue. This is also true for fan grill. It would be much better to use detachable metal fan grill which can be easily cleaned or replaced instead of 3D printed one. . If you have a plan to update the model it would be nice to see such changes in your model.

Thanks a lot for your awesome suggestions! I'm thinking about moving the filter to the front like you said. But I gotta admit, I'm pretty attached to the original grill design, so I might just stick with it. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts with us!

Amazing... I love it... I just hoped there is a similar version of the 3D print files good for a 140mm fan.

16:01 Guess only using double sided tape wasn't a great attachment method for the USB C pcb inside the casing..

The thin grey 3M VHB tape has been work for me. You can also strengthen it by adding a layer of hot glue on top.

I wonder how much the airflow will be affected if the filter was in front of the fan?
@simplymaker
@simplymaker Жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure, but it seems like the fan will be placed at a greater distance from the smoke.

@simplymaker new to electronics, but how did you choose that specific 1N4007 diode? Why not a capacitor?
@simplymaker
@simplymaker 3 ай бұрын
I use a diode to prevent current flow to the PD port while use input from the DC jack. You could substitute it with a Schottky diode, which has a lower voltage drop, but I'm sticking with what I have at that moment.

So all you need for soldering fumes is a carbon filter? No HEPA?
@simplymaker
@simplymaker 11 ай бұрын
From my understanding, the carbon filters are good for filtering TVOCs, while HEPA filters excel at trapping small particles. And many pre-made compact fume extractors typically use only carbon filters. Since space is limited, I've only included a carbon filter.

Carbon filters don't remove soldering flux fumes. You need a HEPA filter.
