Just wow!! Thanks you soo much for making this video!! I suddenly got your channel in my youtube feed and after watching the color theory video... I was just blown. Then I'm watching one / two video per day. Your every video is so much informative. It clears many many questions of mine in many aspects. Just keep creating this kind of informative videos. This channel is meant for serious photoshoppers ❤️ And I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS CHANNEL

If knowledge of photoshop were measured in people, you would be China. How is it that a guy like you with such an impressive knowledge base doesn't have the most popular channel on YT is totally baffling. You have a greater command of explaining color and art than any other videos I've ever seen. I hope you find the fame you deserve, my friend.

He's very good, but PiXImperfect is probably king at this point. That's not to take away from the great content on this channel though.

@@Flashback_Jack subscriber total DOES NOT EQUAL knowledge or ability. There are many, many people who are extremely well versed in Photoshop and other adobe products who do not even HAVE YT accounts or, if they do, they don't have many subscribers.. Julienne Kost amongst them. She is one of the world's foremost experts on ALL adobe products yet if all you do is look at youtube, you'd never even know her. Syd is of her caliber.

@@paulrepage Man, you really are coiled up tight aren't you? I've been running into more people like you lately. You really should take a moment to breathe and relax. Check the channel out if you want. Decide for yourself what value it serves you. I'm out, but really--relaaaaaaaaax.

Hello Sid! This is killer tutorial! I deeply appreciate you and wish you all the best with all your projects! I learnt a lot from that! Just I think we can add Gradient Map (Black to White or reverse for making Luminosity masks as well) Thank you and God bless you!

Hi Sid, thank you very much for the tutorial, but what would be the benefit of a 16bit mask instead of 8bit selection? Thanks in advance.
@Stylemypic
@Stylemypic 3 жыл бұрын
The main benefit of 16bit mask over 8 bit selection will be when you are masking large area with color gradients like in the sky or studio backdrops. 8bit selection will show banding in such cases. For any other general selection or mask there won't be any noticeable difference.

Do you have any advanced techniques for selecting hair? I already use select & mask, channels, even make my own hair brushes to draw back in strands where I've missed and using clipping masks to get rid of halos. I wanted to know, with all your advanced knowledge, if you have some secret that I'm missing.

Hi there, retouching hair is hard work and sometimes involves most of the steps you mention. I prefer luminosity masks rather than select and mask, and will definitely share the workflow/technique for a future video.

Contradicting information. On items 3,2,1 was for 16 bit, but in the video he talks about not caring about 8vs16 bit, and provides a video link explaining why. Am I missing something?

I'm pretty new in luminosity masks, so let me ask you, If I got the subject. At. 7.45 you have a statement, that selections are always 8 bits, so (in a 16 bit file) we better use Calculations with New Channel parameter (instead of hand-create channels, or Calculations via Selection). So I tried to check it, if we really have difference here. I've created two "second luminosity" channels, one via selection and another via New Channel method, to compare them. My method was, to compare these two (presumable not so identical channels) in a new 16 bit grayscale image, as layers, giving them a Difference blending mode + an exagerated Curves layer to reveal the slightly difference, if any. An now the weird part. If I cut-paste these (presumably differing) channels as layers, they show no difference at all. But If I use apply image, some difference appears all over the image (like a noise pattern). Hmmm? Can it be from the 8 vs 16 bit? How cutting-pasting channel content to a new file, differs from applying image method? Are you pretty positive, about that the selections are 8 bits? If you are right, we should handle 16 bit channels with care (no copy paste at all). But what if, this difference is only a bug, or something else? Because I run into a strange situation too, comparing two masks created from the same image but saved in other names (so two similar files, no compression, only the names differs). The idea was to check the similarity of a LumiMask created by me, with a mask created by an extension (both of them via selection), comparing them in a 8 bit Grayscale image, I got difference, but comparing them in an RGB file I got nothing. After I saw your video, I gave a try with Apply image method too, hoping, will be no difference, but it still was there :)

Meanwhile I made some more research, another calculator, this time PSCS6, and I succeeded to reveal some difference between selection-made and Calculations-made masks. It may prove, that indeed, selections are 8 bits. But :) This time repeating the cut-copy vs apply image method, mentioned yesterday, I got different outcome in CS6 :) Both versions show "different" deviation. I think, I'm going to surrender :)

I will need to see the images and the step by step process to point out what's actually happening. In fact, it is actually hard to see the difference in the 8 and 16 bit masks. Although the 16bit luminosity masks have a theoretical advantage over the 8 bit masks, in real or practical scenarios, this difference is only ever noticeable in extreme luminosity masks (not basic lights or dark masks) made on certain images with clean vast gradients like skies.And even if you see the difference in the masks, the adjustments you apply to the masks will have even less visible difference in the final image.

@@Stylemypic yes, you are right, it was only a theoretical and pure technical masturbation :) If you are really interested, I could send you some files, just for curiosity, how they behave on your computer, but after wasting 2-3 hours on it, I see no practical outcome in such a pixel peeping. All the differences mentioned above, are noticeable only exaggerating them a lot. Anyway, it was fun, and helped a lot in endeepening the creation of masks :)
