This video is part of a series in developing the Ultimate Parrot Play Gym! The goal of this series is to give you guys the tools/knowledge that is needed to build a custom stand that is perfect your particular birds.

As always, safety should be your main consideration whenever giving anything new to an animal. You want to make sure that the parts are sized appropriately, and made of materials that are safe for that animal. Remember to supervise an initial interaction with a new item, and remember that animals can still get into difficult situations with items they have had multiple times in the past.

I can’t wait to try making one of these for my African Grey! Prebuilt stands are incredibly expensive and I knew there must be an easier way. Can’t wait for the next in the series and I’ll be sure to post a picture when I build mine. Thanks 😊

It’s definitely easier than a lot of people think, and you are only going to get better the more you do! Remember, there are no “mistakes”, only unintentional design choices :)

You can definitely take this idea and use it for a macaw. You may want to go up on the diameter of the pipe (I used 3/4”, I either use 3/4” or 1” for bigger parrots) and on the thickness of pipe (I like Schedule 40 pipe, but Schedule 80 is thicker and more durable).

Awesome! It’s completely customizable too, so you can definitely create something that works for what you need it for! The one I’m building will ultimately be for one of the greencheeks I’m raising :)

I can’t post a picture of the finished project. It went through a couple of design changes in the process and I ended up adding corner braces to make it more sturdy and it also gave more places to perch.

Haha, you’re ahead of the class! Extra perches and bracing are all topics that are coming up (plus texturizing perches, adding rings for toys, food and water bowls, etc). It’s just a bit of work putting the videos together, so I can only do so many a week. Glad you found the videos helpful!

What size pvc are you using?

3/4” PVC is my favorite since it’s a good diameter for most birds, but I’ve also used 1/2” and 1” depending on the size of the bird. It really just depends on your bird and their mobility :)

Hi Jack! Would you suggest this side PVC for an eclectus?

3/4” PVC is a great starter size for most birds. I’d recommend it for most Eclectus, but if your bird has any special needs (arthritis, mobility issues, etc.) you may need to change the sizing. In that case, I would try building just a small tabletop stand and seeing comfort level with that, but I’ve built stands from 3/4” PVC for an eclectus and it was well received. Hope that helps!

Good video! But wouldnt the pipe be slippery?

The later videos in this series show how to texture the pipe to make it easier for birds to grip/climb, it’s just easier to have the design finished before texturizing :)
