Modern cameras are able to capture an incredibly wide dynamic range. HDR, or High Dynamic Range describes the technique used to bring back details in the extreme highlights and shadows that would otherwise be blown out or lost. Shouldn't an hdr be composed by several exposures?

Not really. HDR is high dynamic range.... it doest say exposure bracketing and merging exposures.

You can. But the dynamic range of modern cameras allows for HDR within a single raw capture. It's not exactly the same. But with the right exposure, you can get to a solid HDR look with far less effort. On top of that, in many portrait situations (where subjects are moving) a bracketed capture is not even possible.
