First off amazing content! I've been spending so much time on your channel lately so props to your great work! Questions: Do you see the industry moving more towards tube lights? I wonder if they are not being widely adopted because most professionals already have a great lighting set up? Would you suggest tube lights for someone who has zero gear and is looking to create a new versatile rig for client work like product shots, interviews etc? Currently eyeing a pair of Nanlite 30c's and some sort of 150 to 300w light with soft box to complete my kit. Would love to hear your thoughts.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's good to hear my videos are so useful. Tube lights have definitely gotten really popular over the last year or so, but I think some of that popularity will wane, because some of their uses are a bit trendy. They are, however, here to stay for a lot of usages. They definitely have their weaknesses over things like COB lights, which can be modified more easily and in more ways, and are much brighter, as well as versus panel lights, which are hard to beat for their slim profile and high brightness when using external diffusion. A single 150-300 watt COB + a couple tube lights is a fantastic setup, and exactly what I use in my studio room (finished garage) to shoot all my b-roll. Having a big soft key light and using the tubes as a rim light makes beautiful b-roll insanely easy, and you could adapt that combo to interviews or nearly any other setup perfectly. Hope that helps! If you end up picking any lights, I'd greatly appreciate if you used my links. It really helps the channel a lot :)

For sure! On “real” filmmaking sets, they are definitely one of the most popular, tried and true options. Smaller productions there’s a lot of Quasar Science and Nanlite tubes as well. The rest are mostly for solo creators looking for the absolutely best balance of what they need for the lowest price I think.

Hi! Just curious what you'd recommend for dance videos/music videos where the lights themselves aren't necessarily key lights but just accents for backdrops? Probably won't be using them at their full brightness so wanted something that would last a bit longer when shooting on locations without power to feed the light :) I was looking into a 4 pack of the godox LC500R's but wondering if the YN360 II Pro's would do the trick

Hi! Im looking to find out which of the godox rgb tube-like lights are brighter, the LC500R or the TL60. Do you know? Also which would you recomend and why?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
The LC500R is about 2/3 stop brighter than the TL60. They are both good lights, but it depends on your needs. The LC500R has a handle, so I think it's better suited for handheld use or light painting. The diffusion also isn't super opaque, so you can still see the individual LEDs inside. The TL60 is more sleek and has more opaque diffusion, so it's better to use if your lights show up in-frame as a practical. It's almost identical to something like the Nanlite Pavotube 15C. I'll do a Part 2 of this video in the future, and have the TL60 in that one. Both work for either, but those are my thoughts. Hope that helps! @@NewLayer Thanks for the offer. Have nothing but good things to say about Fotodiox quality, but I'm now thinking a 4 pack of the Godox TL60's look like my best bet for single source (DMX) management. My wife is a corporate trainer and when Covid hit I built her a multi-camera studio in a (too small) 12x13 room. Because she wants to move around like she's still in a classroom, I did a (higher budget) redesigned this summer so our main (wide) shot is corner to corner with Jupiter 18's hanging from a ceiling grid as my key/fill in opposite corners and one of my GoDox Bi wands as a hair light. However I just added a 36" wide rollaway white board to the room that has to slip behind the fill light when not in use and now when she backs up, I have a shadowing issue because the whiteboard makes it so she's standing behind the fill source. So I need to light about 6 foot of backdrop from the top and bottom using almost zero space. My GoDox wands will kind of do it but I really need the source to be longer so it's more consistent (and, of course, I'm already using the one as a hair light). Went RGB over Bi for the key/fill because I think she can eventually have fun with the effects which is why I'm leaning toward RGB here as well. That, of course, brings up a control issue as no wands work with my existing Fotodiox Jupiter remote, so that means DMX (Chauvet Obey 40 is what has been recommended). Anyway, if I'm going DMX I want to be able to program effects for her so she can touch a button like she does with sound effects on her Rodecaster. Fun stuff but there's aways a new challenge to solve. Plan to watch your review of the TL60's later today.

I just got a couple Lumin8 Spectrum lights! They do indeed seem identical (besides the Lumin8 having a black button instead of green). I haven't tested the Lumin8 with my Sekonic C-800 yet, but I would be shocked if they were any different. The Luxceo also charges via micro-USB, while the Lumin8 is USB-C, and the Lumin8 has app control, which is only on the Luxceo P7RGB Pro. Lastly, the Lumin8 comes with 2 magnetic mounts and a hotshoe mount. The magnetic mounts in particular come in handy. I hope that helps a little :)

I have tested the TL60 a bit, and it's solid, but nothing special really. The Pavotube 15C is $199 and the TL60 is $239, so I'd go with the Nanlite. I will have the TL60 in the Part 2 of this video, but that may be a month or two out.

hey there, supernice and detailed review - thanks a lot for your effort!!! right now I'm struggling to decide whether to go with the forza- or the godox-ecosystem. one main advantage at forza I think, is that all their lights (pocked led, pavotubes, forza60b, forza 200, etc.) can be controlled with one single remote control (not rgb but at least the color-temps). do you know if the LC500R's remote control (rc-r9) is also capable to control other godox-lights shuch as the m1-pocketlight, the ml-60, and maybe other ones too? i think the godox non-bicolor LC500's remote (RC-A5) is compatible with quite a few other godox-lights, but I'm not shure wether it's capable of controlling the color-temperature at those other lights as well. it would be also nice to just get a universal-remote from a third-party manufacturer, but I think for 2.4 Ghz-standards such a solution is not possible :-/
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
If remote control is important then it becomes tough. The Godox RC-A5 only works with the original SL series. The SL II and FV uses another remote, and the VL and UL use another. The new SZ150R might use the same remote as the LC500R, but that hasn’t been released yet so I can’t confirm. The ML60 uses the same remote as the VL and UL series. The Nanlite app is being revamped completely and should control all their lights except some of the older lights like the original Forza 60. I’ve never used their proprietary remote but it seems pretty basic. I hope that helps.

@NewLayer

Benjamin Ehrenberg If you plan to use them handheld a lot, the Godox would be a good choice due to the handle. They also include the barn doors. The Pavotubes look really nice in frame, so if you need them as practicals, those are great. The Pavotubes also come in nice 2 and 4 light kits, so that’s a consideration. Both are great lights, but the Godox is also significantly brighter, and you can compare the tech specs here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Godox+LC500R&light2=Nanlite+Pavotube+15C

The LC500R is much bigger, and a different form factor, so it just depends what you need. The TL60 is more of an accent light and good in frame as a practical, but the LC500R can used for light painting more easily, and is brighter so good for a fill light or even key light sometimes.

@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! If you want one for both light painting and talking head videos, I would suggest the Godox LC500R or the Yongnuo YN360 II Pro (or version III). They are both pretty long, have an actual handle, and are the brightest (which you'd definitely need for talking head). The other lights are mostly too dim for a key light in many situations. The individual LEDs are visible on these lights, so for light painting you'll see kind of a glowing striped look, so it depends if that's OK with you. If not, then you might need to save some money and get the Nanlite Pavotube 15C, which is more diffused. The only "completely" diffuse light here is the Fotodiox DaoLite Prizmo, but I understand it's very expensive. Hope that helps :)

The Pavotube II 6C is only as bright as the Aputure MC lights (newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=Aputure+MC&light2=Nanlite+Pavotube+6C+II) I did a full review on the Pavotube II 6C if you haven't seen it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lb9zl5uKy7i4c6M.html The Pavotube 15C is more than 1 full stop brighter than the MC, and of course, 2' long, so much taller. With that said, I don't think you'll get a drastically different look with the Pavotube II 6C than you already do with your 4 MCs. For products, I really like the Pavotube 15C because they are 2' long, and you can't see the individual LEDs inside, so they make soft shadows and great reflections. Since you already have 4 MCs, I would recommend 1 Pavotube 15C, or save up a bit more and get a 2-light kit. The only downside to the Pavotube 15C is that they don't stand up on a table very easily, so you'd need a mini tripod to make them more secure. The LC500R is a great light, but you can see the individual LEDs inside, so it's not as good for reflections on products. I hope that helps.

I guess it depends on what you mean by programmable. There are some cool tubes coming out with "pixel" control, meaning each tube can be multiple colors, and they can be linked and programmed together. I've been following the Peragos tubes which should be released soon: instagram.com/rayzr_light/ The Nanlite Pavotubes can be linked together and controlled all at once, so if you're simply looking for that type of control, they have that. Things like the Godox LC500R can also all be controlled from a remote control at the same time. If you want to see in-depth reviews of specific lights, leave a comment stating which ones you want to learn more about and I'll do that for the most popular requests. If you need brightness/color accuracy comparisons, they are available in the video, in PDF form, and in my Light Comparison Tool at the the link in the description. Feel free to ask specific questions as well and I'll answer, but an in-depth video of 8 lights would be over 30 minutes long, which is not practical, so I am introducing these lights to gauge interest in which ones people are most interested in. I did mention downsides to the lights that have them, otherwise, it's mostly personal preference on the style of light you think fits your needs best. I'm not here to tell people which lights to buy, but to inform you of their differences. Alongside the brightness/color accuracy measurements I provide, you should be able to make your own decision.

@@theautomationchannel6920 The Godox VL series isn't the best light in every situation. I prefer the SL150W II, some people prefer the FV series, and the UL series is unbeatable if you need silence. There's no single best light. The same goes with tube lights. The Godox LC500R is fantastic, and beats other lights in some ways. It has better brightness, included barn doors, a great case, and remote. It's also over $200. Some of the cheaper lights don't have those features, but are closer to $100. If you don't need the extras of the LC500R, then it's not the best light for you, because you would be wasting $100+ on things you don't need. It's also much bigger than the Iwata Master R, so if your main concern is size, then you should consider those. All of this information is provided in the video. If there was a light I would never recommend, it wouldn't be in the video, but all of these lights would be just fine depending on your needs. If you have a specific question or scenario, feel free to ask and I can provide guidance on what might be the best fit for that, but recommending 1 light over the others is disingenuous because everyone has different needs and priorities.

I did a full review on the Pavotube II 6C here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lb9zl5uKy7i4c6M.html These lights are pretty much analagous, so if you have other Godox lights, I'd get the TL30, and if you have other Nanlite lights, get the Pavotube. Right now there's no good Nanlite app, but that will change by end of summer hopefully, then really they'll be identical lights for the most part. The Godox is a TEENY bit brighter, but the diffusion on the Pavotube II 6C is more opaque, so looks better on screen. The Pavotube is also firmware upgradeable which is nice. You really can't go wrong either way.

So after three months, how do the Nanlites perform? Im looking to buy one with the Christmas gifts I received, looking for more information after having them being used.

They work great for me! I wish they had green/magenta adjustment, but most lights currently don't have that, and should be a feature included in the next generation of most brands of RGB lights. Overall,, I just use them for basic accent lighting or rim lighting most of the time and they are great for that.

@@NewLayer Thanks for the feedback! I've seen many photos made with a lot of different types of lighting tubes. I think I'll order one of these, to begin doing my portrait work. I'm planning on doing something unorthodox with the lighting. And I could use a RGB light for that. :)

I actually have the weights listed in my light comparison tool! newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=LUXCEO+P7RGB&light2=Iwata+Master+R The Iwata Master R is the lightest, followed by the Luxceo P7RGB. You might look into the Nanlite Pavotube II 6C (which I did a full review on), because they are smaller and lighter, and have built in magnets which could come in handy working with cars.

will you compare the long 4' tubes? particularly, DigitalPhoto Chameleon vs Nanlite Pavotube?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
I did a full video using the Chameleon Tubes here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9KCqMKczbLaf30.html I don't know if I'll get around to a direct comparison video, but they are very similar. The build and menu system of the Chameleon Tubes is slightly lower, but other than that, they are just as capable as the Nanlite tubes. If you have other Nanlite products, then it makes sense to stick to Nanlite for everything, if you use multiple brands, or just want the least expensive option, then the Chameleon Tubes are great.

@@imiy You can see my measurements here: newlayer.com/gear/lights/compare?light1=DigitalFoto+Chameleon+RGB+Tube+Light+4%27&light2=Nanlite+Pavotube+15C Yes the Chameleon Tubes have lower color accuracy, but the majority of people use these for colored accents, in which case that would be irrelevant. You might want to test the lights at mixed color temps like 5600K, I just got an LC500R and the R9 is around 70@5600K which is really bad. At the extremes the light tests well, but anywhere in the middle range where you would actually use it, has really bad color quality for CRI.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
In white modes, I test at the extreme ends because the middle ranges are simply a mixture of the white and tungsten LEDs. So if the R9 at 3000K is 90 and the R9 at 8500K is 95, then it will be somewhere between 90 and 95 at 5600K. SSI vs tungsten and daylight standards is a better gauge for color reproduction at 3200K and 5500K. With that said, it sounds like Godox changed the LEDs they use, because you definitely shouldn't be getting an R9 of 70. Either that, or it's a faulty unit. What's the overall CRI you're getting at that color temperature? And what brightness are you testing at?
@danielchen1655
@danielchen1655 3 жыл бұрын
@@NewLayer At the extremes they test well with R9 around 90. You would think the middle values would be good as well... try it for yourself :D I tested at 100%. At 5600K setting it measure 5800K, Ra 93.5 R9 71, , TLCI 99, SSI 72 (CIE D55). The LED lightbulb in my room has a better CRI score and R9 than this.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielchen1655 I just tested again, and although it does go down a bit at 5600K vs the ends of the CCT range, it's nowhere near as low as yours, which makes me think Godox changed the LEDs on these lights. I get R9 values of 98.7 and 92.9, so significantly higher than your 90. And in the middle it's still over 80, again, way higher than 70. For a singular R value, especially R9, 80+ is fine, as long as the rest of them are good, but that's not really the point here. The bigger question I have is how this is physically possible, LOL. This is the only light I've ever noticed to do this. And from a strictly physics standpoint, how can the tungsten LEDs and white LEDs represent R9 tones so well, but when turned on together, make it worse? I need an explanation for how that's possible in our universe! LOL I also measured a few LED light bulbs in my house just for fun and they were all between 58-65, haha. They are all different brands.

Hey great vid. I recently bought the four pack Nanlite Pavotube 15C’s and was highly disappointed to learn that Lightning Mode in the Special Effects has to be manually triggered. Epic Fail Nanlite.. As a director, I need installed ‘presets’ to work automatically. When I’m shooting music videos or TV Commercials these lights require one of my crew to physically trigger them. What do I say to my clients? Sorry about one of crew in the shot, he had to trigger my Pavotubes?? Lol. Please tell me they’re going to update this?? Cheers!!
