Unfortunately, due to the fact that he was always injured, Matthews won't be getting any credit from most Charger fans. Because he took the role of Ladanain Tomlinson, people will call his years in San Diego a bust. Thank you, Ryan. A great 5 years with him in San Diego!

Well he wasn't always injured, he had a solid 2011 season by rushing over 1,000 yards and was completely healthy and went to the pro bowl that year, 2013 once again completely healthy and rushed over 1200 yards which was the best season he had as a charger, other fans who don't see that he put up decent numbers those seasons are blind as hell

Yes, I knew this already. However, for the most part, Mattews was hurt a lot. Now we are just left with what could've been had he not gotten hurt a couple seasons such as 2012 and last year.
@JuanGarcia-pl8yb
@JuanGarcia-pl8yb 9 жыл бұрын
Well 2012 we had no offensive line so the running game wasn't that good, last year I wouldn't blame him for his injuries, Royal fell right on his knee last season against Seattle that wasn't Mathews fault and with his sprained ankle I totally blame that patriots player for tripping him and causing that injury

I sure miss watching this young man play. Ran hard every single time he touched the football. Was not afraid of contact. Had the agility to make tacklers miss. Literally put his body on the line every down (resulting in fumbles and injuries). It’s a shame he had to live under the shadow of the great LT. Just couldn’t fill those shoes, but tbh, nobody ever will. Made grown men look like boys at times.
@samm9074
@samm9074 2 жыл бұрын
Everything you said was on point. I would like to add that he didn’t have the break away speed or lacked vision once he got past the first level of defenses. You can see how he would end up crashing into the LBs or he would get caught easily. He just didn’t have that extra gear a lot of RBs have. Lt had the ability to pull away from the defenses once he got past the first level, Matthews could of been so much better if he just had that burst.

Anyone who knows football know Mathews is a top 10 RB. Had him as my RB in my fantasy league in 2013.He's no 2nd fiddle to Murray, only thing Murray got on him is a better contract. Don't be surprise when Chip Kelly favors him over Murray on goal line situations, kid balls hard.
@marvye3588
@marvye3588 9 жыл бұрын
yoyo ma everything you said was true, except for the goal line part, for whatever reason, under 3 different coordinators, once the offense is in the red zone, mathews gets phased out. As a charger fan, i've seen tolbert.woodhead and most recently oliver become the TD vulcher in the end zone. mathews is an excellent bell cow, but for whatever reason hasnt had luck as a goal line back
@easyrazzle
@easyrazzle 9 жыл бұрын
marv ye That's because the Chargers thought Mathews was fumble prone and were scared he'd lose the ball in a congested area such as the red zone. Then in 2013, they quickly figured out by the middle of the season that Rivers and the offense can go from 10 yards on the opponents side of the field to the Chargers 10 yards but had trouble scoring in the red zone.Woodhead was used for goal line situations for the beginning of the season and is exactly why Chargers had that issue until they were force to use Mathews and saw he was a goal line beast scoring easily when call upon. Things started to roll from there and they steadily fed him the ball and saw he fixed his fumbling issue, which is why he racked up consecutive 100 yard games close to the ending of the season and was the running back with the 2nd most 100 yard games that year.Eagles or Chip Kelly have balls whch is why they/he took Bradford, Murray and Mathews even though 31 other teams are scared to do so( 31 other teams don't have Chip Kelly's sports science that limits injuries either) and this same balls of his will compel him to choose Mathews over Murray in goal line situation as you already know Mathews is a beast.

This is what Chip was talking about. He wants these types of guys, guys who can run over a defender and still gain 5+ yards on the attempt, not guys who dance around and lose yards. I love the way Mathews runs and always thought San Diego wasn't using him enough. Yeah, yeah, injuries. But a couple games I watched, he was getting nice gains in the first half, then they abandoned the run game and put it all on Rivers. Made no sense. I think he and DeMarco Murray have very similar talents. They both are quick and seem to have good vision and lateral movement. I can't believe Chip Kelly landed both. Murray tore it up last year, but had almost 400 carries. Imagine the torment of defenses when you basically have two of the same runningback. That's essentially using 50% power for 100% production. I am a Patriots fan, but I root for the Eagles second because of Chip. He is the next Bill Belichick. All the haters will see. The Eagles are going to be unstoppable once The Mad Scientist perfects his recipe of players and plays.

***** - Mathews 108 yards rushing yesterday against a tough Jets defense. Chip is working out the kinks. The Eagles will find their identity soon. Belichick does the same thing every year which is find out who is good at what. The process usually takes half the season. But...Belichick usually has a foundation under that experimenting to get the wins while doing it.

+william minshew I think turner and sproles came there too early right when the chargers thought LT might have some more 1500 season yards left like his previous years but he was max out behind that offensive line , on Gordon, well he's a Wisconsin back so I wasn't surprise when he didn't make any difference for them plus they wasn't raving about him at training camp, ha ha ha Monty ball is unemployed , sweet foot sugar foot whatever got beat out by damage goods Dion lewis

***** Kendricks didn't look any better at 0:51 as he and Williams got left in the dust. It's not really a knock on Kendricks but more a testament to Mathews's ability, I know that Eagles front 7 is pretty good in general. If a defense doesn't set the edge, you're most likely gonna be tackling him 15-20 yards downfield. He's pretty big at 6 feet and 240 pounds but he's as fast as small back, he ran a 4.4 40-yard dash. +CJNeima that was Maxwell and Earl Thomas, the best safety in the league. Even he cant catch Mathews unless hes 15 yards downfield or Mathews is running up the middle.

CJNeima , why would Bill Davis need to fix that? He doesn't have to defend Matthews. It's quite the opposite actually. He needs the defense to get the ball in Matthews' hands.

***** every Charger fan knows he is a talented back - top 10 in the league, but he struggles to stay healthy and that's the bottom line.
