Excellent video as always. A good tip to put a piece or 2 of paper under the saw blade to make a slightly larger off set on your marking gauge. Keep up the good work.

Pretty ultimate dude! I had a feeling the marking gauge would work as it is set to the actual saw being used. Given that this is tool agnostic I think we should refer to this method as the ShawnShift instead.

Tbh I've already got the wheel marking gauge, if I can make it work, that's a win. Add a couple bits of paper or even use a feeler gauge instead, that valuable beer tokens well saved!

Paying a lofty sum of £43 or $75 cad. for this little gadget is a total waste of coin unless your a woodworker with deep pockets or one who wants all the toys to help you become a better worker. The wheel gauge will do the same and is adjustable to any saw with any kerf dimension. If I wanted this shim, I would probably go to the local machinist have one made for next to nothing. I like the gauge wheel since I already have one. Great tip, thanks. 🇨🇦👨‍🦳👍

Hi Rich, $39 in Canada 🇨🇦 the shim gives you the ease and versatility to use on softwoods and hardwoods without the need for trial and error. I definitely don't have deep pockets I just want to improve my woodworking as much as possible and this device helps. You are also benefiting a great charity at the same time which is a win win for me. Having said that the marking gauge offset method works just not as efficiently in my opinion but still a good option. Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂🙂

⁠@@karlpopewoodcraftplease let me know where I can get the shim for $39. in Canada. On Cosman’s site it sells for $53.00 . That’s $53. plus shipping plus a 15% harmonized sales tax. Unless my math is bad, that’s close to $75 to my post box. We have many charities here in 🇨🇦 to contribute to directly to when we are able.

You’ve answered a question of mine - does the Shawn Shim™️ work with a Veritas dovetail saw. I can get that saw in my area, but the Cosman saw, while I’m sure is amazing quality, is utterly ridiculous price-wise to get shipped to Australia. Good work, thanks for the comparison!

Yes it works fine with the Shawn Shim mate, I use the 26 setting for pine and it's spot on. Thanks for watching.

Please be aware the Shaun Shim is not suitable for people using Japenese pull saws. The smallest offset on the Shaun Shim is 0.023in or 0.5842mm. The kerf on a Dozuki is between 0.47 - 0.49mm.

Sheesh....there seems to be a conspiracy to make the simplest joints into something highly complex. Massively unnecessary fuss......and a great way to put off beginners.

Calling a Dovetail simple when people struggle sounds like it may put more people off more then trying to share multiple ways in which the same outcome can be reached. I've also do a Dovetail video using the cheapest simplest tools in my workshop which you may prefer. I'm offering a variety of ways in which people can then choose the most appropriate method for themselves.

@@karlpopewoodcraft It IS simple. I've had complete novices, who have never picked up a saw or a chisel in their entire lives, cut perfectly respectable dovetails within an hour. It is ridiculously over-complicated by KZfaqrs seeking an audience.

@@karlpopewoodcraft No, I'm not. Those were for specific purposes on a couple of forums. It's the only format I know of for hosting videos for use elsewhere. God knows why anyone would subscribe.
