Heck yeah! Cumberland, my home town, and footage of 734 which is retired now. And you're probably aware that WMSR is running the rebuilt ex C&O #1309, a Baldwin built 2-6-6-2 H-6 Mallet .. what a beast. And I had to laugh, DJ, when the footage of Savanah came up. Several years ago we went down there for a weekend to take it all in, and of course went to the railroad museum. As we walked in the roundhouse, a tour guide says, "hey, your just in time for a train ride", and I was like "heck yeah"! .. I was never so disappointed .. paid $10 a piece to take a 200 yard train ride .. lol .. I had greater expectations. But overall it was a great experience to see it all .. I mean it was all about trains, so .. great video, DJ, thanks.

Lol. It wasn't a long ride, but man it was hot! I was so dehydrated after that quick run. I havent been able to catch their new one at WMSR yet, maybe 2024.

Great video,I had the opportunity to get a cab ride on steam engine 152 at the Kentucky Railway Museum back in the early 90's. I enjoyed your video,seems like steam Loco's are a living breathing creature.

Steam put lots of people to work and it was still cheaper to run than a diesel locomotive. Diesel locomotives were one of the greatest job killers there ever was.

Cheaper to run, but what about maintenance?
@frankmarkovcijr5459
@frankmarkovcijr5459 8 ай бұрын
@@pvt_picklestomp3014 maintenance per mile was cheaper.Diesals don't need a fireman and m-u capacity. The Chicago Great Western would hook up 10 locomotives to save money on crews.At first shops were built to service them but it was cheaper to contract it out. Just like cars . You take them to a garage when they need work. Today's trains have l person doing the work of4 engine crews.

I’ll take an air conditioned Gevo with cushion seats than a stool in front of a boiler and 130 degree heat lol.

Great vid.. I know the guy that owned 643. It's unfortunate that the museum group he had, went through a complete restoration of that loco to running condition. It had passed the FRA boiler test as well. With nowhere to move it, and CSX giving them problems, you know the end result. Being so large I don't know if it could have seen any runtime. 10 drivers is a long, rigid wheelbase. Curves have to be huge, even with lateral motion devices, and blind drivers. Merry Christmas, and a safe, healthy New Year.

Great video, thanks for sharing. 👍 I live about a quarter mile from the NS line that runs from Ft Wayne to Chicago (ex NPR). A few years ago I heard a strange whistle call in the distance and got around in time to see the NPR #765 roll by. Very cool.

CORRECTION. The previous owner actually has lovingly restored this to were she was alomst ready to be fired up. They even ran her on compressed air. Due to the roundhouse being torn down and other..... stuff. She never ran under her own power. She was so close too

i didn't know there was any running camel backs in the country!! i'll tell ya DJ we need to get these grand old ladies back in service and send the diesels to the scrapyard!! those whistles sound a million times better than air horns and coal smoke definitely smells better than diesel exhaust!! plus it seems everytime UP has the 844 out for a run she ends up rescuing a stranded diesel and pushing that freight drag into a yard so they might as well go back into service while we start building new ones!!

Uhm, once you’ve been in the cab of a 130 degree steam engine vs air conditioning in a new wide body you’ll see why I am not going along with your idea lol

@@djstrains I mean don’t you also have to factor in EPA regulations? burning coal is not really good for the environment. Those tier 4 GEVOs are really much less polluting and more environmentally friendly.

@@djstrains Essentially I was hoping that the people in the cab would have been talking more about the differences of how steam and diesel engines handle. I was curious if there was any difference in the amount of thinking one must do due to things like the steam engine's lack of dynamic brakes and any other operating challenges.

On the big steam engine, there was diesel engine inline with it. Did the steam engine need that diesel engine to help all those cars?

No. I think it was NS wasn’t gonna risk steam by itself if I am correct

No it did not need the diesel but it was used to extend the range by using it lightly on the grades. In times gone by 765 pulled consist of 26 to 30 cars in the New River Gorge, unassisted. There's a great video by Hopewell Productions called running that New RiverTrain.

if you go on google maps and trace where the POHC heads away from their engine terminal in McKees Rocks, then reverses to interchange with NS as soon as NS crosses a bridge by Brunot island. Inaccessible by car.

You learn how to run a steam engine 🚂 by running a dinky like that. Only senior enginers got to run big modern locomotives and get the premium trains. I knew guys who were in engine service for 50+years. They would insult deisal engineers by calling them motorman.
