Il viaggio a Reims (1825)
dramma-giocoso by Gioachino Rossini
Excerpt: ''Partir o ciel, desio!'' from Act I, scene II
In this performance, Renee Fleming sings the Countess Folleville, while Maddalena is Catherine Wyn-Rogers, Antonio is Bruno Caproni, Don Prudenzio is Jeremy White, Madame Cortese is Montserrat Caballé, Baron Trombonok is Andrew Shore and Modestina is Glenys Groves. This performance took place in the evening of July 4th, 1992 at the Royal Opera House, in Covent Garden, London. Conducting was Carlo Rizzi with the Orchestra Of The Royal Opera House.
Below is a short synposis of the happenings prior to this aria and the happenings in it, from Wikipedia; the free encyclopedia:
"The Countess calls for her maid, Modestina, and Madame Cortese goes to search for her. Modestina appears, and the Countess, worried that her clothes have not yet arrived, asks why there has been no reply to a letter that she had sent. Modestina had entrusted the letter to the Countess's cousin, Don Luigino, who immediately arrives to say that the stagecoach which he had hired to carry the boxes had overturned on the way. The Countess faints and Don Luigino calls for help.
Maddalena, Antonio, Don Prudenzio and the servants arrive, together with Baron Trombonok. Don Prudenzio and the Baron argue about how to resuscitate the Countess, but she recovers sufficiently to lament the loss of her garments. ("Partir, o ciel! desio")".

I saw this live in the Royal Opera House! It was wonderful. Renee was so impressive! So was Sylvia McNair. Less so Monserrat for me. Often inaudible in ensembles. But the audience loved her!

I always felt Fleming was a natural comedienne. In her prime, her voice had an effervescence and care-free agility that could portray Rossini's melodramatic humour extremely effectively.

@@NLidar Did she ever sing Fiorilla in Il Turco? That would've been the perfect role for her in the early 90s

Gorgeous singing lavished on such a silly role! But Fleming is wonderful in it, and executes Gossett's abbellimenti (including a staccato Eb6!) perfectly. Thank you Nuri!
