TUTORIAL STEPS:
- First things first download some wallpapers you wanna switch between.
- Then, in the photos app, go to each wallpaper and hit the share button and add each one to it's own album that you can look up later in the shortcuts app: I named mine things like writing focus or photo editing focus.
- Next go into settings and focus and make sure you've got all your focus modes setup and ready to go - and make sure to enable any custom home screens you want for each focus.
- Then pop into the shortcuts app and create a personal automation.
- Scroll down and select one of your focus modes.
- Select when turning on.
- On the next screen select add action and search for and select "find photos."
- Choose add filter on the next screen and then choose the photos album with the wallpaper you want (that you should've setup earlier).
- Then at the bottom search for and select the "set wallpaper" action.
- Then hit the little arrow next to photos and turn off show preview and hit next and finally turn off ask before running and you're done.
- Now just repeat the process for all your focus modes and get your widget added (and I added the widget to all my focus home screens so I can easily bounce between them all).

I have a shortcut with that switches my wallpaper between about 30 different wallpapers that i downloaded and put into an album. I love it 😃i have it automated so that when ever plug or unplug my charger or whenever the battery hits a multiple of 10

Just curious why you decided to automate the change as opposed to shuffling throughout the day. I have yet to create a shortcut for cycling through wallpapers but I want to, so just wanted to know what led you to those specific automations cause I assumed it was just a shuffle thing. Can you get pretty creative with the automations that could trigger a wallpaper change?

Thank you for posting. It was quite the little escapade today setting all this up. It was a little hard to follow at times because one app was immediately jumped into affer another, but I appreciate you showcasing your setup and what the new OS is capable of. I'm sure folks have already pointed this out, but the new focus modes for iPhone allow you to link wallpapers to your foci. Best of luck and keep it up!

Streaks! I have several apps that I use that I need to check in with daily, and that awesome little app will help me stay on top of those items without having to go digging for them. Thank you for that little $4.99 nugget! Note for others, if you already have a streak going, you can go into the settings and mark the calendar to get you to the number of day you're already on! Additionally, it chooses appropriate icons for your tasks.

I had been Poo-Pooing Focus Mode until this video. I had watched a few other podcasts about Focus Mode but none of them made the use of Focus Mode clear to me. Tying and showing the integration with shortcuts made it clear to me. You are one of my favorite podcasters.

wow - thank you so much! re-created my homescreens / automations / shortcuts with all your ideas and I love it. Especially Play (watch later) solves a big problem for me, as the „watch later“ feature from youtube is somehow not working for me with these round about 500 vids in there. Other tips have been great too, like: streaks, countdown, PostIt & timer.

This video changed my productivity in my classroom! Changing focus modes and backgrounds for each class saved me so much time. It was great! Thank you. Currently my backgrounds have stopped changing with the focus modes. I've gone through and redone each mode with the correct background and nothing happens. Any ideas how I can fix this? Thanks!

Hi Chris, incredibly helpful tutorial. You’ve helped me transform my iPad into a device I actually want to use more than my laptop. However, when setting up the wallpaper change shortcut, my images always end up zoomed in instead of full sized. Is there any way to fix this? The perspective zoom function is not turned on under the automation. Thanks!

I found the Countdown widget to be most useful, as I can then remind myself as to how long I've got till my next assignment is due. I also really need to get my Focus screens set up properly, as I still haven't done that yet!

I think an update in iOS 16.1 broke the automation to change a wallpaper with the focus change. There seems to be a “limit” step added. Also can’t seem to make a folder with automations intended to create a shortcut widget for different focus modes

Hi Chris, sure that the shortcuts with the changing wallpapers for each focus still works? Or did any changes in iOS happened? I was looking so much for this function but it just doesn’t work. Love your videos!!! But I am having some troubles with the multiple Home Screen short cuts. When I turn my short cut off, the wallpaper I set for the specific Home Screen/short cut, stays, even when I turn my focus off. Is there someway to fix this? Am I doing something wrong? For some reason when I do the focus mode wallpaper it changes my wallpaper for both in the focus mode and once I exit. All my settings are as listed so I don’t know why this is happening. Suggestions?

Quick question regarding the focus mode widget. How do you get the automations into a shortcut folder to then load into the widget? I can drag and drop regular shortcuts to the folders but not the animation. BTW Loved this video! (Though i love pretty much all your videos) I have known about the shortcuts, focus and such but never actually implemented them til now. Thanks for the great content!

Enter the focus shortcut in the Shortcut app. Then turn on an auto shortcut for each focus mode you customize. Gather the shortcuts you have opened in a folder as shown in the video. Then choose shortcuts widget from the add widget section and select the folder you created when you say customize. In this way, you can group.

Is there a way to create a desktop “folder” that would simply containerize a group of normal sized icons on the desktop? The container would simply be an opaque outline/background (kind of like the widget containers) that would give a quick visual picture of which icons are in this group, instead of the current folder that is just the same size as an individual icon box and you don’t actually see what’s in there.
