This summer Matt started working on an engine for the 1932 Ford Roadster, that turned into a lot more then just a re-gasket. The engine will need to be set away to have the bearings for the crank replaced and the whole bottom end gone over for any other issues. Luckily Matt is a hoarder and had another flathead sitting that could be used. Ironically this engine was used as mock up in the car back when the car got worked on. The "new" flathead came from an estate in Wilmington, NC, where the story was told that this engine was used as a cackle engine at local hot rod shows. Matt and Steve first test the engine on the run stand to see if there are any issues, and then install the copper heads and intake. Matt also did a bench line on the time it took the engine to get up to temp versus the copper heads. Can't wait to hear this engine in the 32 Roadster!!

I never heard of the copper heads before, they must be rare. You said the previous owner used to fire it up at car shows just to listen to it cackle, flatheads have such a unique sound. Gotta love it! Flathead Jack Schaefer told me a story about a motor he built that had duel carbs, and all the chrome goodies for a farmer In Sacramento to run his irrigation pump. He said he would drink beer and listen to it cackle! Good shit

On your crank with the tight bearing. It was never ground just hand polished. When you hand polish a journal you can easily hour glass the shape and it is correct in the middle and tight at the edges. Learned that the hard way.

I love it. My pappy back in the day raced flat heads locally. He had a book he would use to get more out of them for racing. It was called something like backyard hop up or Hotrod hop up. Something along those lines. But I heard lots of stories about building and racing flatheads as a little kid. The biggest one I remember hearing was packing the heads with asbestos to increase the compression. Building your own intakes to put more carbs on was another one. Good times.

Those heads are amongst the coolest out there. They must be so easy to cast (without hollow water passages) I can't believe other manufacturers didn't pick up on the idea - unless they don't work so well. I'm sure Matt will keep us informed on that.
@comethiburs2326

they absolutely dont. the lack of water jackets means the block runs hotter over time, as they say in the video, the heat creeps once the block is shut off. it was a feature and a problem with the early flathead heads. that's why so many aftermarket heads feature enlarged water channels, external pipes or thicker jacket cores... the flathead is a peculiar engine because it is NOT happy when hot rodded without paying attention to cooling, as it came with a hot temper from the factory on that front. gotta thank ford for that uneven water jacket job, horrible water routing... and excessive confidence into obsolete concepts (as of the late 30's) like thermosyphon cooling. hence the ardun, smith and alexander aftermarket heads. which found that the 3 main bearing block didnt like the newly found high rpm freedom all that much.

copper/bronze absorbs, retains and dissipates heat much differently than aluminum. that's why cooking pans and pots have copper in them. the heat is distributed more evenly, and is retained in the pan longer to make cooking quicker and reduce hot spots in the pan that can burn your food. i have chunks of copper on my woodstove to make heating my house more efficient. bronze is just an alloy of copper and tin.

A very familiar set of issues that you went through there Matt. I experienced almost identical issues on my 8BA shortly after bringing home my 39 Mercury. It was my first flathead ever so the learning curve was steep ! It was great to see the way you and Steve tackled it and problem solved. Yep !! I agree that it really sucked to see the Weiand heads drilled out and therefore making them wall hangers. That's ok ... Had a lot of problems with the dual point and went back to stock so I could drive it as a DD. Still had problems with vapor lock I thought but may have been over filled float bowl and had to wait for awhile before attempting restart. Copper head gaskets will also help pull the heat out of the motor to then transfer it to the copper heads... This is a trick with flathead harleys.. the fiber head gaskets act as a heat insulator which doesnt matter when there is water in the heads as the water helps transfer the heat.. i would use a copper head gasket with those solid copper heads.. also the reason the couple of head studs were loose is because the copper head needed to annel itself with the heat and then could conform to the new motors block surface.. they were still ridged and stiff and shaped to the old motor they were on... Great video..!

Just a note on the copper heads, ... and you have quite a bit of comments on this so I don't want to come across as arrogant, but a bronze alloy of copper and zinc would be much stronger in some ways. Could it be bronze?

Not really. It’s there to equalize the air/fuel charge coming into the engine and reduce the chance of the intake frosting up in cold weather. So when it’s hot out I’d rather a colder shot of fuel and air going into the engine versus warming it up with 180-190F coolant.

@@IronTrapGarage I run updraft Strombergs on a couple of vintage airplanes. They are notorious for icing up in the venturi at low RPMs. We have a diversion valve (carb heat control in the cockpit) that pulls hot air from a "heat muff" on the exhaust system to guard against carb ice. You may experience internal icing as well with your set up. If the engine starts running rough for some unknown reason, internal icing may be the culprit, even in hot, humid weather.
