My contactor shorted out because of a bug. While the tech we here I got a look at the inside of my air handler and was stunned at the amount of mold I saw in there. He suggested a UV light but the cost put it out of my reach. I thought it cant be that hard so I went on youtube and found your video. Took a while to find one of the same quality but I just installed the Fresh Aire Blue Tube UV Light and your video made it a snap! My local tech wanted to charge me 800 to do the same job that doing it myself was about 215. My tech inspected the work and said its very good work and an excellent job. I also installed a REKO Lighting R2000 Air Purifier in my duct work. Thats a unit anyone can install and I now have double the security in my HVAC system. Thank you so much for your video. Im subscribed and following you from here on.

My UV light manufacturer states any wire coming from the UV light, that will be exposed to the UV light, should be wrapped with foil tape. So the wire that was behind the metal panel on the coils should be wrapped with foil tape.

no mold likes to grow in a humid atmosphere so when the air stops flowing and especially if people turn off when they leaving for a period of time. The mold will have a better chance to grow in that time depending on the conditions of course. However if your already putting one in it is for at very reason. so it is worth the power to keep it on 24 7.

I have a question, I see every one connecting their UV system to a straight power source. My question is, why can't you connect your transformer to a relay system whereas it will only activate when the system is active by tapping a trigger off the control of the thermostat. Finally, what would be a good wattage for an effective UV system.

I had a friend give me a brand new one. It’s got a low volt transformer 24 V doesn’t have the 240 and the 24 and you’re exactly right when you hook them up and they’re not hooked up right what it was doing was the compressor come on the outside fan would run but only for about a minute and then shut off the inside unit unit was running so my question is you have a red and black wire coming out of the ballast? What do you hook those up to any help I would appreciate thank you.

@valricojoe7659

The system runs on 24 VAC, the transformer you install, is 240 VAC to 24 VAC, so no 120 VAC involved. To do that you need to install a relay to switch the bulb on when the fan or cooling is called for by the thermostat.

So Mr. Jones, the best place to mount the UV light is just before the Evap coil, on the return air side? The reason why I ask is because out in the field I have come acrossed this 24 volt UV lamp & have always seen it mounted in the supply plenum. I am not questioning your expertise. What you've said makes sense. Just wondering why so many of these UV lamps were installed in the supply plenums on both verticle upflow air handlers, & horizontal air handlers. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for your awesome video!!!
@stephenc1427
@stephenc1427 7 жыл бұрын
Some HVAC techs like to mount it in the supply plenum because it's quick and easy. Doesn't do much good! When I requested quotes for a UV light installation that's where they were going to place it (2 different companies). Because of this, I ended up doing it myself and it was a little complicated getting the wiring into the A coil area. I used the Blue Tube Brand UV light. Thanks for the the great video!
@chillpillology
@chillpillology 3 жыл бұрын
The return plenum has warm germ, viral, and mold and are apparently easier to kill there. Furthermore, not everyone who cleans their coils every year has any problems with mold on the coils. But i guess some don’t clean their showers for years. When you do it at the coils it is recommended to place it above the coils so drips and moisture won’t affect the UV light. I personally do not want my paper thin coils to get brittle from UV 24/7/365. My coils are fine, i just want to kill germs and mold and apparently that is done most efficiently on the return air side. It is supposed to kill more of them in the warm air, but i’m still trying to get better data on that point.

@@chillpillologysir with all due respect, I am a microbiologist and virologist, and we have many sayings that help us with remembering all the conditions bacteria and molds “thrive” in. One I have used the most is “mold likes cold.” Ever notice how quickly cheese and other dairy products develop mold soon after opening them, and putting in your refrigerator? It’s because our hands, the air around us and most anything that touches the cheese after it comes out of its sterile packaging, will have thousands of tiny spores land on the surfaces and when they are put back into the refrigerator they grow at an exponential rate. This is in sharp contrast to most other bacteria that thrive in a warm environment , hence the reason for incubation of eukaryotic cells.

Where would the transformer be? How do I get to it? This UV light system is a free standing Honeywell unit. It has the "box" that you bolt to the a/c unit...This "box" is what you insert the uv bulbs and the bulb holder into. When I insert the bulb into the holder ( it is a 4 pin light ), turn the holder 1/8 turn to the right, the blue light does not come on. My power supplies are working.

Nice, but UV light should only need to be on when the fan is also on pulling air through the coils and ductwork. If your UV light isn't on 24/7 it will save money on electricity and bulbs will last much longer! I have 3 UV lights in my pool plumbing and use no chlorine anymore, but they only turn on when the pump turns on 8 hours in the winter, 12 hours a day spring and fall, and 16 hours a day in the summer in Miami, Fl.
@guillaumeker9492
@guillaumeker9492 5 жыл бұрын
From what I red online you have to the UV light 24/7 on any air or water system (mainly if you don't use chlorine). UV light is great for sanitation but the air or water after getting the UV treatment are more subject to grow bacteria. That's why it is better to keep it ON all the time to make sure the remaining air/water will be pump cleared.

@chillpillology
@chillpillology 3 жыл бұрын
im not an hvac professional, but my understanding is that you still have a compressor that calls for a/c or heat in your PTAC (or other unit) in your apt. He clearly said dont power share because it could affect the operation of the unit. the fact that you have a cooling tower isn’t a factor. Your unit is still high voltage and the power supply is engineered for a certain peak load when the unit kicks in; take some of that power away diverted to the light and it could be an issue.
@valricojoe7659
@valricojoe7659 2 жыл бұрын
You have a chilled water system, so, you would still have a blower unit inside your unit, where you could tie into the 240 VAC feed to run the 240 VAC-24 VAC transformer to run the lights.
