That variable capacitor has two major sections of different sizes. They are probably for an AM radio. (MW & LW) The left hand section is about 500 pF the right hand is about 350 pF. There are also 2 small, extra segments on the same shaft which are very low.. perhaps 15 pF . They would have been for FM radio tuning. If you seek as high capacity as as possible, parallel them in as well. It won't add a lot but every bit counts.

Paul, I love the video. I have a Xiegu G1M SDR QRP. I will build a similar antenna (waiting on a variable capacitor from China - similar to yours - 2 ganged 350 pf). I am interested in the actual wiring setup. Did you join the center conductor and the shield at each end of the large Primary loop? Or did you simply use the center conductor inside the shield. I am thinking of joining the braid and center conductor at each end of the Primary loop, where they connect to the capacitor. [Edit: I see you left the shield unterminated and even with a few cm gap on the opposite side] Also, have you simply left the ends of the Driven loop twisted off (it looks like) and unterminated? VK4FETC [Edit: I saw in another of your vids what you did - many Thanks]

Hi Paul, Many Thanks for another great video about magnetic loops. I've been thinking about one for much higher power output, which will also obviously require a much larger spaced capacitor. However, due to the high Q of the magnetic loop, have you thought about putting a much smaller value variable capacitor in parallel with the main tuning capacitor. Maybe start with the fine tune capacitor at somewhere between 1 quarter mesh & 3 quarters mesh, and then tune the main capacitor in your normal way, followed by finer tuning with the secondary smaller variable capacitor. A field strength meter attached with its pickup antenna close to the mai large loop may simplify tuning & increase tuning accuracy, especially when fine tuning with the smaller capacitor in parallel with the main tuning capacitor. I would be very interested & greatful to see your thoughts on this. Once again Paul, Many Thanks for your brilliant antenna projects videos. 73 De M0RAY, Sittingbourne, Kent. UK.

I have an old Amp Supply AT-1200, I also have a 10-foot 3/4-inch copper tube, since I already have the copper, I will go with it. Hello Paul, very interesting built of a MLA. Have been experimenting myself but have a larger size loop. This one is smaller but seems to be working well. Have 2 questions: Don't you have problems with tuning, I'm not shure your capacitor has reduction? And question 2 is: Could you tell us the length of the coax you used for the large and the small loop. I like the way you routed the coax through the tube, never thought of that. 73, Bas PE4BAS

@OM0ET 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bas thank you very much for you interest of my MLA. Lenght of main loop is 1190 mm and small loop is 445 mm. Small loop is no more made from coaxial cable. Now after i did improvements is made from 2,5mm thick solid core copper wire, let see my 2nd video after improvements here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMyloceilcmnZ6M.html

At 1:40 you can see a small gearbox like reduction on capacitor. Tuning is not so hard to tune. Harder is to prevent little capacity change while is hand close to the tuning knob. Because of that you have to tune it little bit lower than is the best SWR position. When will be your hand away so MLA will resonant higher. It's about 3-5kHz change in my case.

Good ideas. Got a little seasick watching the moving camera. I made videos for 30 years. The point of the motion camera is for the subjects to move NOT THE CAMERA. Devise a homebrew tripod for your camera, or buy one. The PVC mount seemed to have changed shape from the start to the end of the video. These are wonderful little antennas, and the ideas in this video are very solid. I look forward to making one.

What confuses me is that the loops are made of shielded coax which blocks signals. Why isn't it better to use exposed copper?
@OM0ET
@OM0ET 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Golan, the shielding of the main loop never should be grounded if you use inner core as radiator. But you can use shielding as radiator too, but there is a problem when are used PL connectors, because of poor electrical connection will cause this tiny spikes as you can see here: 11:05 After this video i did few upgrades and one of them was that now i use inner core as radiator - there is a much solid connection and this spikes dissapeared. ;-) btw. shielding can be used as the prevention against strong electric noise, but i am not sure of that in this case.

My antenna is working excellent now after upgrade what i mentioned before. There are not any spikes/peaks anymore at antenna analyser graph. Inner core is connected only.

My question is on this cable used as big loop.as it has shield of corrugated copper thin film and not the smooth shield (as it is not seen in the cable used as it is already ended with pl 239 connectors.) Will it effect. As some doubt raised here is cleared by use not to ground the shield.but if I want to use this thick cable as VHF radia as shield and not middle one ,can I use it? If yes , what the effect on antenna?
