Hi Jeremy. Great video! I had no awareness of these things until I saw it in your video. I went out and bought one. It works great on small wire forms for up kickers and such. Have you ever tried to clean plastics in here? Or is it really only safe for metal parts? I was wondering about maybe Flipper bats or plastic star posts things of that nature.
@PinballMayhem5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great feedback. Cleaning plastic posts & bats work well. It really depends on what cleaner you use. On some advanced ultrasonic cleaners you could set the temp too high & melt plastic. But the HF ones don't get quite that hot. Keep the comments coming. Congrats on getting a ultrasonic machine.

I fill mine with straight water. Then put my solution in a old plastic peanut butter jar, with what parts I want cleaned. It will still clean parts through plastic or glass jars. And you wont stink up your ultrasonic cleaner.

That thing about bone marrow is BS. The worst that can happen is that you might burn your skin in the hot solution. The cleaner doesn't overheat and shut off. It reaches its maximum temperature and the thermostat shuts off the heater, but the transducer will still work. I've had this same HF unit for about ten years, and I've put many hours on it, cleaning everything from rust antique knives to motorcycle and guitar parts. I've used many different chemical solutions in it, too: Windex, Krud Kutter, CLR, Evaporust, Pine-Sol, ammonia, Dawn, Murphy's Oil Soap, and probably a few that I can't remember. If I have any regrets, it's that I didn't buy a bigger one.

HI, thanks for the video. i have ultrasonic cleaner as well and I tried cleaning plastics from a pin from the 1950's. one of those thick plastics that have the color all the way through it. part of it disintegrated, not sure if it was the solution or the heat that caused it. I dont recall the solution, it might have been Purple Power or something like that., anyway, just wanted to comment so people are aware. the rest of the plastics were ok. it looks like you put plastic parts in yours as well. what kind of solution do you use for plastics? thanks
@PinballMayhem4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and question. Yep, I put plastics in mine. I have not had any issues but I do watch the temp as in I don't put plastics in it if the solution is super hot. For solutions I use a variety of products. I like simple green HD (purple in color). For metal parts (this works on plastics also) Polychem Deox-007 degreaser, deoxidizer, brightener. This will strip plating off if left in long enough (hours). Follow up with Polychem Polytect 2CB anti-tarnishing rinse. These 2 chemicals I get from clock supply places (time savers, etc). But because I have to order them in I usually restrict it to metal parts. This solution is well worth saving the old dirty stuff as it continues to work well even when really filthy.

The ultrasonic will damage the original numbers. If you are going to re-apply them the ultrasonic might be a good way to go.

Great video! Answered all but one question I had, and that was this..... Is it alright to use FABULOSO Cleaning agent in the ultrasonic? If so, what ratio do you recommend going with? I'm a Gunsmith on the side, and I'm constantly cleaning grease off small parts by hand. Please give me your insight strictly off the record so to speak??? Thanks my friend, and Merry 🎄 Christmas
@PinballMayhem2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jay, Merry Christmas! 🎄You can use anything in the ultrasonic cleaner. However some things require more caution than other things. Based on my quick search of Fabuloso I don't see any issues. Remember, in my view the ultrasonic cleaner just multiplies the cleaning power of anything you put in it. For a ratio I would start conservative, mainly for economic reasons. It won't hurt if you have a stronger solution but you may be wasting money. Start with 1 part solution 3 parts water.

@@PinballMayhem Awesome brother! You my friend have just given me the information I need to do a test run on a filthy old Ruger 10/22 Bolt I've been saving for this very machine! My daughter bought it for me for Christmas today so I'm stoked to try it, but they don't leave shit for instructions for it? Its just a simple Central Machinery Harbour Freight Ultrasonic Cleaner, but I've heard they work pretty decent??? I guess we'll see won't we?? LOL I'll let you know how it goes my friend?? Thanks again bud!!

Glad to help. I would mix up the solution, then plug in the unit & turn on the heater. Since the parts are grungy, after turning on the heater- put on the lid (no parts on the machine). Wait until the solution is good and hot. Then drop in the parts & run it a few cycles. If Fabuloso is normally a good cleaner for you - it should work even better in the ultrasonic cleaner.

Because it's really high frequency the liquid doesn't move around much. If you hear it buzzing when activated you should be good. On mine the heater must be manually turned on. It can be turned off or if left on it will auto shut off when it reaches max temp.

Hey Jeremy, Jay Meddaugh here again! If I have gallon of water and a gallon of SIMPLE GREEN, how much water should I remove from the gallon or should I say how much of the SIMPLE GREEN Do I add to make a gallon of the pre-mixed solution?? I'm itching to try this tonight?? Thanks bud!
@PinballMayhem2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, the mix will be determined on how much cleaning power you need vs cleaning time. I can be a cheap skate so I error on using less chemical (or a weaker soloution). So if I find I want faster cleaning or need more cleaning power then my mix ratio might change. On the back of my Simple green HD PRO (purple stuff) there is a simple chart. Heavy cleaning 4 cups cleaner to 1 gal of water, med is 2.5 cups cleaner to 1 gal of water, and light cleaning is 1 cup cleaner to 1 gal of water. I use close to the medium. So to make it easy. Fill up a 1 gallon container with hot water (hot if you are going to use it right away). Then remove 3 cups of water from it. Then add 3 cups cleaner. Good luck

Another video posting recommended taking the unit apart and use a silicone sealer around the lip of the metal pan. Is that really necessary?
@PinballMayhem4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. I also heard about doing that. Earlier this year I popped mine apart to assess its condition after many years of use. I found no water intrusion. I'm careful not to overfill the basin. And I only dump out the old solution from the back (where it says to). I see the latest ones from HF are a bit different from mine. Hopefully they will hold up well.

Does it work for cleaning small carburetors?
@PinballMayhem11 ай бұрын
I have cleaned my Corvair single barrel carbs with this. It worked great! But it really comes down to what chemical you clean them with, how dirty the carb is, and the size of the passages. The chemical carb dip is seriously strong stuff so that's why that works great. Simple green might not cut it.

When turning it on always be sure there's liquid in it. When activating it you should hear the buzzing & see the liquid shake/pulsate/shimmer and or have a bit of a wave action. To test the heater, fill with lukewarm water and press the tc (far right) button. Leave the ultrasonics off (unit should not be buzzing). Come back in 15-20 min. The water should be much warmer. The heater may have turned off on its own.

why wont you tell us what your cleaning solution is?
@PinballMayhem5 жыл бұрын
An excellent question- Some of my reasons are: I don't want to start a debate on what's the best solution to use- as it's a very personal thing (like your choice of shampoo or favorite engine oil), along with that - the best thing about an ultrasonic cleaner is it multiplies the cleaning power of any solution. I use several different solutions depending on what I am cleaning, my preferred solution will change as I like to try out new products. I may do a product review video in the future for the brass cleaner I prefer to use on clock parts - Polychem brand Deox-007 (cleaner) & Polytect #2CB (metal protectant)
@SmallSpoonBrigade4 жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind that you don't necessarily want to use the same solution for everything. And even if you do, you'll want to use different concentrations depending upon what you're cleaning.

What's the safest way to remove the fluid from the device?
@PinballMayhem Жыл бұрын
You have a few choices. If I'm disposing of the solution I lift the front up and the fluid flows out the back side (there's an arrow on mine). If I'm saving the solution for later, I'll get a large syringe and transfer it out that way. Depending on what I am cleaning I have different solutions/chemicals that I use.
