I Want To Be A Machine, played live in Stockholm, 19th September 1977.I couldn't find any live video footage for this track, so I made a slideshow out of another Ultravox! video.

Those first 3 albums, so many of my punk contemporaries couldn't get their heads around it.....they have now. Amazing stuff.

Ultravox were too intelligent for the average teen pleb 😂

Ultravox always seemed to me to encapsulate that early part of the 70s punk era when punk was still defined more in terms of non-conformist attitude and minimalist musical sensibility, rather than as more or less the fast-paced guitar/bass/drums identifiable sound that came to typify the genre. A time when acts as diverse as Patti Smith, Television, Wayne/Jayne County and the Electric Chairs, Pere Ubu, The Dictators, early Talking Heads and even synth duo, Suicide, in New York, were still part of the movement, and in the UK and Ireland: Wire, The Only Ones, Swell Maps, The Stranglers, Warsaw, The Fall, Subway Sect, The Atrix, etc., all had a connection to the genre also. John Fox period Ultravox was so innovative, and although the Midge Ure incarnation of the band put out some genuinely good stuff too (eg, listen to ‘Lament’ for instance), the original sound and ethos was THE crucial Ultravox and that is still what comes to mind when I think of this special band. Eternal rest to Chris Cross ✊

I saw John and Ultravox at the Marquee in London 1978, he came up and spoke to me in the audience one night at the same venue when my flat mates band was playing, such a cool guy, I was a Numanoid at the time (lol)

Well you were ahead of thr curve as Tubeway Army Are Friends Electric came out in 79?

@@rachelar Yes, in the Tubeway army I should say, I looked like Numan, high forehead and full lips, we both have aspergers, socially awkward

I saw them on the same tour. John Foxx was wearing the long leather coat from the first album cover. Great.

There was no videorecording from this concert. It was recorded in a radio studio with a small audience. I was lucky enough to be there :)

This is one of my favourite track's that Ultravox done back then. The still shots that you have done are amazing. Thank you for putting in the hard work for all us TRUE John Foxx fans to appreciate. I am glad to see that 70 lovely people agree with me and one well never mind. Thank you

classic song from a greatly under rated and unappreciated artist . Dont think the music press such as sounds / melody maker really got a hold of what Ultravox and John foxx were all about . After leaving Ultravox his solo material is awsome . Metamatic / The Garden , great albums

It's a shame how Ultravox changed its sound after he left. Would have loved to see the evolution of the band sound.

Agreed. It's a very powerful song, one which evokes all kinds of images and emotions. . . it got slated in the music press for being cold and emotionless but i think they just didn't understand it.
@stuartfrance8117 жыл бұрын
Quite right. 'My, how your innocence has depraved me.' - There is nothing cold and emotionless about that line... The music perfectly reflects the lyric.

I saw them @ The Whiskey A-Go-Go in Hollywood, that was in Feb., 1979. I was 23 yrs. old then. Now @ 57 they are still one of my many favorite bands. Todays bands do not have it like Ultravox.

Ultravox & Eddie & the Hot Rods. That must have been a really good concert. I did have the 1st & 2nd LP's of E. & the H. Rs. Always wanted to see them. I also saw Public Image LTD. in L.A. @ the Olympic Auditorium in 1980. And I also saw Roxy Music @ the Santa Barbara Bowl in 1984 or 1985. The Sranglers opened up for them. What a show. Yup I'm just an old Glam Rocker, Punk Rocker & New Waver. Always will have those memories from that time period.

Ultravox got slated in the music press in the 70s. I don't know why. I thought it was really unfair at the time. It was a different era and people were very "snotty" about what they liked and didn't like. I'm just re-discovering that I'm still fascinated by John Foxx.
