Thank you so much for this lesson. My daughter has an interest in drums, and we can't afford the whole set, so we got her a real crash stand and real cymbals and an electronics drum set. I've been teaching her blues on the drums, and then what I think I know of in Jazz. The journey has been so cool. Again, thank you for the lesson, on how double the use on hi hats.

"Steal from the rich" is a tribute to Ulysses' humility and greatness. I love watching these videos. I'm at least twice his age and I've been drumming since the 60's and yet, he is so far ahead of me in his skill and wisdom. Thank you, Ulysses! One of the things I like to do with the hi hats is to very subtly "crash" the top cymbal on the "3" and let it muffle itself. It is noticeable, but not overwhelming to the balance of the song. This works with brushes, as well. This is where his video on "The Power of Touch" is so important. So many drummers think you always have to use the shaft of the stick on the hi hats or crash cymbal when crashing and this is only part of a giant menu of ways to accent the song. Wonderful video, as always. I may have missed them, but I would like to see some of your tips on bossa nova, rumba and other latin rhythms.

Ulysses Owens Jr. could use a couple of frying pans from IKEA as crash cymbals and still make them sound better than anything I could ever do.

For small venues I tend to do things like that on the hi hat as I can’t use crashes in those rooms due to space, sonic and 3D.
