Well done Vincent & other contributors. What a fantastic project that's obviously had a lot of time, effort put into it, then open to anyone with a 3D printer to try. 👍❤👍

Hey! Thanks so much for this video and for sharing the files for free, that's seriously gnarly of yall. I saw on Printables to use good quality filament. I'm very new to printing-- how can you determine what filaments are good quality? Are there brands we can generally trust? My printer supports PLA and PETG, if you have recommendations for both I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Any concerns with food safe material used for printing specifically ?
@KnowledgePerformance7
@KnowledgePerformance7 11 ай бұрын
Nothing from a "home" grade 3D printer is considered directly food safe unless serious precaution are taken. That said the needles are metal and the coffee doesn't directly touch it so it's probably okay.
@jychoo1424
@jychoo1424 11 ай бұрын
@@KnowledgePerformance7 As long as the printing edges can be smoothened out I wont worry so much. Its the concern of small particles that might come out after the gears spin for some time due to abrasion / friction.
@primal5435
@primal5435 7 ай бұрын
PETG / PLA is considered foodsafe, what isnt, is the brass nozzle which has lead in it. Replace that with a steel nozzle, and then it should be food safe (as far as I know)@@KnowledgePerformance7
@baldbadger7644
@baldbadger7644 6 ай бұрын
needles are acupuncture needles which I assume are food safe if cleaned regularly. PLA are also food safe (in fact your body makes lactic acid)

with all the gears moving and rubbing to each other, is there a chance that plastic particles end up falling down and getting mixed in with the grounds? I thought about this issue and that there is a chance, and feel so that it is a little bit of a concern especially with a 3d printed material more so, I dont think it is solid enough...
@KnowledgePerformance7

If the gears are designed correctly, they shouldn't be grinding. Correctly designed involute gears roll against each other without any relative sliding motion. Of course I have no idea if these are designed in this way, hopefully the designer can comment on the gear shape.
@redfoxdude
@redfoxdude 11 ай бұрын
While I can't make any definite claims about food safety, they are proper involute gears and are under very little load, so rubbing/grinding is pretty much a non-issue.

Where I am in Canada you can find people locally offering 3D printing services It's relatively affordable although with a lot of precision parts could be expensive for something like this. Also needs to be high quality prints most likely. Still a lot cheaper than a Moonraker. Some libraries also offer 3D printed for the cost of the materials used.

Just another way to waste money. Just realised that the tool is free to make but I still think its a waste of money to buy such a tool as sold by Weber, unless someone can do a blind taste test if a simple tool like Cork and pins are just as effective?

No more effective than can be done by hand (i.e. cork and pins). But less time and more repeatable, guess it depends what your time is worth. Also as mentioned, the plans are free and the parts only add a couple of dollars to the cork and pins. I don't drink wine, so this ends up cheaper for me :D
