But Ange was right. They were going to kill her and her aunt and make it look like they killed each other.

But Ange was in the right in this situation. They were actually going to ambush her and kill her. So in the end she won and is now living her best life in the future with Erika by her side. 😊

It's not as much paranoia as it is pure, extreme pragmatism. There's a possibility that he might turn on her, and killing him eliminates that possibility, thus it is the right decision. (Not saying that it is right, just that for someone who values the truth and nothing else, this is the right decision.)

There's also a world where she dies when she jumps off the building, it happens after she finds out the Single truth. Of course since she's dead we never know what happened after that

Put it another way, it may be a meta world where her decision is "disconnect" to the main world where she lived (aka non-canon). However in either way, it's something that only happened in her head and no one else can see it anyway so "delusion" is not too far from the truth

e21big Well, you could look at it that way or you could think that there is more than one different world in Umineko. If you go back and watch the credits for Umineko Episode 1 you will see written clearly that EVERYONE in that world died, including Eva, which means that the first Episode takes place in a different world from Ange's, because as we know, in Ange's world, Eva survived the murders. So there are many different worlds, the one where the "Happy Ending" happens just happens to be the one that's looked at the most.

***** no it does not - because that world is just a story, it did not really happen any where but inside Yasu's head who wrote it and Ange's who read it. Thus, from a real world perspective, everything happen in EP1 or any other world of a game board is just Ange's reading novel (and perhaps arguing to herself in form of Red-Blue truth battle).

e21big I don't know about that. At the end of legend of the golden witch it says that this story was written by ushiromiya maria with a piece of her jaw in a bottle message. Handwriting analysis shows that it matched her handwriting. I consider it highly suspect that anyone could write this tale with their jaw missing unless it was forged by someone VERY close to Maria such as a person she would see every day... I wonder who that could be...

​@masakasama No if she hadn't done this she would have been killed. At the end of episode 4 it's stated in the credits that Ange died in 1998. Once you find out about Amakusa's secret plans in Episode 6 tea party you can infer that Ange getting turned into a pile of meat in Episode 4 is an illusion being cast over her actual death at the hands of Amakusa.

@@31Moth13 Or you can read it as Ange "dying" in 1998 by being replaced with Yukari, the way that Battler "died" in 1986.

@@31Moth13 Wtf? She didn't hand over everything to Okonogi in the magic ending because he asked her. She wasn't interested in the wealth anyway so she was thinking of donating and selling everything. This isn't obviously a question of "doing what you want with your property"; if you're the owner of a business conglomerate, you're responsible for so many people's jobs, stocks and a huge chunk of the country's economy; donating EVERYTHING is a very cruel thing to do when there have been people who have been working for you all your life and their livelihood depends on your company. And for Ange who had no interest whatsoever in running the business, giving the rights to Okonogi and trusting him was the best option.

@@myon9431 it's sad considering how obviously canon the magic ending is. If Ryukishi wanted it to be a big choice on "how to live your life: pessimism into pragmatism at the cost of love vs. Seeing love that doesn't 'exist' to live a happier life at the cost of being tricked" then the two endings should have at the very least been given equal weight, or just not make the trick ending so overtly bad while the magic one overtly "good". There are pros and cons to both lifestyles and ways of thinking, but it seems Umineko is content in only showing the cons of trick and pros of magic.

@@spazerdazer8421 I hate the fact that there isn’t a possibility for middle ground. In real life, it isn’t either blindly following your imagination vs doubting everything and being deadly pessimistic. I was seriously hoping for the trick ending to be about how Ange grows up to accept the fact that her family died horribly, but that she must still go on and stay focused on what’s true and what the future holds so she can become happy. I never would have imagined this would end so badly…

I think part of the reason this ending is given less weight than the Magic ending is because Ange only gets in this position by continuing to chase a truth she doesn’t need. Choosing to live the loveless, pessimistic live is something she has been doing from the start. Ange is completely correct about everything here but had she chosen to live differently, (from the rooftop scene onward) there would’ve been no need for Okonogi to plan around her and kill her, and thus, she wouldn’t have to take the actions here. It’s worth noting that Erika has already taken that route and all it did was make her unhappy and alone

I prefer to think that both are canon. It depends on the reader accepting one ending or another.

Love wont keep Ange alive. Trick ending ensures she will live.

She doesn't survive in other fragments. Chapter 4 end credits says she dies in 1998. Why she dies? Who knows. Either after falling from skyscraper(safety net unlikely saves you). Or she was killed by Amakusa(Higurashi style ending).

The Magic end starts with Ange on the skyscraper. She doesn't go to Rokkenjima at all.

@@EpicFailVids Dying just means the “personality” dies. Look at Shannon and Kanon who get confirmed dead in every game. If Ange discards her name and becomes someone new, Ange Ushiromiya dies.

If this is the reader vs the author where the protagonists are your game pieces and the authors game peice is the antagonists. Wouldnt admitting that magic exists and beato is a witch be like losing the game? Yes you get a beautiful ending with the magic version and die and go to heaven but in the trick ending ange is still alive. She's just a little ummm maniacal. Her family doesnt come back but she finds out the truth and wins only it feels a little empty. I guess this is what ryukishi meant by umineko being a bitter story.

Turksemployee ShinRa See, I think this is the type of reasoning that Umineko is explicitly trying to criticize. The mystery genre is not about winning or losing by solving the mystery or not, it's about understanding the author and their messages in their work and then interpreting that message for yourself. In that sense mysteries are more akin to love than a battle. Remember what Willard keeps saying "don't neglect the heart". The author is not rejecting the truth here, but telling us to find the whole truth including both objective reality and subjective experience. In that sense not accepting Beatrice would be more like "losing" as you didn't grasp the whole truth or the "heart" of the mystery, thus not actually solving it. Ange's arc is the same way. When she claims that her family is alive regardless of the red truth or the lies of the world many people take this to mean that she's rejecting the truth. In reality its quite the opposite. She accepts that they have died and the fact that they were terrible people but also accepts the truth that they loved her and that she loved them, which is the complete truth. The fact that they are alive is also true as their memory still exist inside Ange. By finding the complete truth she is able to use it to move on. If you want proof look no further than the goats. The goats are representative of this kind of thinking, that we should win by finding the truth and "killing" the witch. The irony here is that not one them actually got close to solving the mystery as they completely fail to understand the why-dunnit. The three characters who actually solved the truth, Willard, Battler and Erika, each to some degree understand the importance of the "heart" of mystery (though Erika chooses to ultimately ignore it, a choice that is reflected by Ange in this ending).

A month late here, but... READ IT. Even with spoilers, you won't regret it. And unless you already grasp the truth, it is pretty much impossible to ruin all of mystery with a couple of clips.

You and everyone who thinks this ending is "happy" or "conclusive" are underestimating how huge the mafia network actually is.

People like it because it's realistic, in my opinion the magic ending is a whole lot of fan-service. It showed what people wanted to see, I think this ending is better written.

I think this ending is more like an extra that confirms some theories about EP 4 if anything. I wouldn't call it realistic, expecially considering the core message Umineko took 8 episodes to tell. I also wouldn't say the magic ending showed what people wanted to see. I mean, a lot of people raged about the fact it didn't really openly explain what happened in Rokkenjima.

***** Sure it's more "realistic," but it also spits in the face of everything the author wanted to project in his story.This ending was more or less written by the author to confirm how many people reading it really didn't give a rat's ass about the story and characters, and just wanted answers. I wouldn't consider this ending better written at all, since it purposely throws everything the story was building up to at the wayside, outright changes characterization in order to have a "LOL TROLL" ending, reveals that the Metaworld does exist (Despite this being the "Magic isn't real!" ending,) and doesn't bring any closure to half of the story. The Magic Ending didn't show what people wanted to see at all, and most of Episode 8 was mocking the fanbase. (Anyone familiar with the Umineko fanbase knows that the majority of them HATE Episode 8 with a passion, and like Funchal said, most hated the ending because the truth was never exposed in black and white.)

***** I think the author is trying to say that truth isn't always needed, sometimes what people need is lies, or 'embellishments' as Virgillia put it, or 'Magic', because the heart matters too. That was what Battler trying to say to Ange. Even Dlanor A. Knox and Willard H. Wright, who denies witches and magics, accept that 'heart matters too'. In this trick ending, Ange reached the truth behind everything but I think she wouldn't be able to live happily even after knowing the truth, similar to how Furudo Erika is right now. That is why I prefer the magic ending, the magic ending has the 'love' that the trick ending lacks.

Ange did say at the end that truth is not worth anything. Honestly I dont think this is that realistic concerning the end where she talks with Erika. It is obviously just ending that is there as side dish for everyone who wanted answers and did you get answers ? Nope. Only more questions. I also agree that the magic ending is the way to go as it feels more complete. For me at least. But that is just a theory. Like everything about Umineko really XD.

He could easily turn her in. He knew that Amakusa was dead by now. If she wouldn't have killed him too, she most likely would get killed as well

While it seems like nothing post-"about to jump off the skyscraper" actually happened with Anje, in the context of this sequence of events Anje's conclusion could still definitely be possible. Okonogi/Amakusa don't really want to kill Anje; their ideal outcome is one where Anje just lives normally. But they're willing to kill her if it looks like she's going to do something crazy like sell off all the company's assets. It's a last resort for them.

Learn nothing? Ange must survive. I love her character and this is the only path that leads to her being 100% alive. Paranoia? Yeah. Alive Ange? That too!
