To Portland I go, first to be on NBC Northwest's Outdoor GPS as a morning show guest, then my brother convinces me to stay in the city to film an episode. Yes, there are mushrooms to be found and things learn as I have a very Portland experience for the day. Hope you can find all the nuggets of information embedded in the shenanigans we have as we explore a different type of environment!

Your video reminded me of what I miss about Portland. I live in Astoria now. It isn’t weird but we have a nice Sunday market for part of the year, and lots of places to forage wild mushrooms nearby.

New Sub, great stuff. Recently got interested in mushrooms after my yard filled up with these weird "black brain" looking mushrooms. I now know they are black elfin saddles. Well now I'm hooked and wanna go hike and see what I can find, lol. Looking forward to more videos.

Thank You! I can't help it, the squeals just come out! You know, the Matsutake should just be getting starting in September up in BC. October tends to be peak season, this last year they were strong all Sept-Nov, which isn't always the case of course, you never know what the season will bring!

I spent several months overlanding on BLM lands in the Willamette valley a few years ago and found many spots that were good for foraging mushrooms. North side of Bald Mountain was very abundant. Great video.

nhiavangfoto Thanks! That tambourine moment couldn’t have been any more spontaneous...hahaha...I was just down in California recently and filmed with my GoPro while I was down there. It’ll be more of a ‘how to citizen science’ video and not so much about foraging though. It’s got Christian and Noah (authors of Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast) in it so that’s a cool perk about it :)

You spoke a heart rot mushroom in this video. I have always wondered if Grifola frondosa is a heart rot mushroom or not? I found information online to be conflicting. Some say it is a parasite and others say it has some kind symbiotic relationship with the tree. I love your content and how you are seeking out the true facts!

Great question, so Grifola frondosa is not a heart rotter, but a butt rotter! It parasitizes the roots of trees (commonly oak) and that's why it fruits near the 'butt' of the tree (rather than up directly on the tree like other similar mushrooms). Where the confusion comes in (which is totally understandable) is that mushrooms aren't always strictly parasitic, and their degree of parasitism can be variable. With the Maitake, it is a parasite but its intention is not to kill the tree, it wants to keep it alive for as long as it can so its food source doesn't get depleted. However, the eventual result is that the tree does die--here's where the switch happens--Grifola frondosa can also be saprobic, meaning it feeds off of dead organic material. Some mushrooms are ONLY saprobic and never feed off os something living in a parasitic way, but this mushroom (as with many others) have both capabilities. Hope that kind of helps!

I actually live up in the Gorge, I tend to spend more time on Mt Adams rather than Hood though, but both are incredible!

Yellow Elanor , sweet deal! I’m more involved in the collections and research of polyporic and corticoid fungi but I love watching your channel. Funny thing is I’ve seen a few familiar faces on it. I lurk on INaturalist/ Mushroom Observer and Facebook under the name Chael Thomas. My research goes on an international level however when I’m out roaming the woods near here, it’s always spent looking for Endophytic (Bridgeoporus noblissimus ) on True fir species trees.

I hear that's only true if they come from Blue Wizards...and they have to be fresh. Apparently if they're from a Brown Wizard you can roll them and they turn into fantastic pipe tobacco. Not as good as Longbottom Leaf or Ol'Toby of course, but comparative. Although I have to say I've never tried the method myself so I don't know the validity of it, you can't trust everything you read on the internet these days.

I'm SO GLAD you said that! I was hoping someone would notice and leave a comment about it! Haha, the music just happened to line up perfectly. Elanor is a flower that is yellow/gold in color, it means 'sun star' and grows in Loth Lorien...it was brought to Middle Earth by the Elves when they came from Tol Eressëa. If none of that makes sense, you can look it up on LOTR Fandom ;)
