The ceiling was lower because you were at the Arrivals hall, not because Chengdu station is old. Chinese high speed train stations ususally have 3 levels, Waiting Hall, Platforms, and Arrivals. Arrivals hall is the ground level and that's why its ceiling is not as high as that of the Waiting Hall.

The only province without high speed rail is Tibet where is due to the high altitude and low density of population. Xinjiang has been connected to high speed rail network. There are bullet trains from Urumqi to Lanzhou.

Gradually your tour getting interesting as you are travelling towards east, I visited in 2008 when there was only one bullet train in Shanghai. Nice to hear that China build such a big network of high speed trains. Indeed traveling on train is most economical & time saving travel mode. I watched all your episodes of China.
