One of the most famous Grand Nationals of all time where the late Dick Francis gallops towards the finish line on HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's horse, Devon Loch. Dick is just yards away from the finish line and is undoubtedly about to win the race when Devon inexplicably jumps up and falls to his stomach. It looks as though the horse sees a fence in front of him. ESB, the horse behind, swoops past Devon Loch who is still scrambling to his feet and wins the Grand National. The Queen Mother famously said, ""Oh that's racing"" and Dick Francis retired from racing the following year and turned his hand to crime writing.

I remember this race from when I was young. Devon Loch was owned by the Queen Mother and everyone was cheering for a royal victory. Lucky winner was ESB.

Looked very much like Devon Loch tried to jump a phantom fence. He jumped exactly parallel to the water jump on the other side of the rails - which is only jumped on the first circuit.

@@lee7701 the widespread theory is that the water jump did somehow confuse devon loch into leaping a phantom fence - but there was no way to get an answer from the horse of course - but then again that water jump is still there and nothing happens with other horses every year - so you might be right that the water jump was irrelevant.

There are some ridiculous comments here. The horse did not break his leg and it is not known why Devon Loch fell. He was perfectly okay, enjoyed a summer at grass and won a hurdle race in the Autumn. I seem to recall that he died aged 17, in retirement. Now, as for the astonishingly idiotic comment about how the horse would have been okay if he had not been racing that someone made, no, were it not for racing these horses would not be standing in a field, they would not exist at all. Those of you who claim to care about them, without racing they would not be here to care about. It is absurd that you behave as if spending time in front of a computer makes you more qualified to talk about how horses are treated than people who spend their entire lives around them.

Far more horses are kept for work and these days as pets than aver get thrahed round in a professional race. It's not a particularly bad sport althoguh it's pretty sad to see horses being screened off as they are shot. My only condition for continued racing is that any horses put-down, to be put down in full view of those who cause it.

MaxSafeheaD I was writing specifically about racehorses. They actually are bred specifically to race. People don't just drag horses at random from fields and turn them into racehorses. They are purpose-bred. So no, without racing those particular horses would not be standing in a field. They would not exist.

Better not to be born at all, then to "live" your whole life in captivity and poor living conditions and then end it as pet food and if you're lucky enough, maybe someone will adopt you and let you rest for what time you have left, but still in captivity.

perfectXXdrug Lots of animals live their lives in captivity and do rather better than they would if left to fend for themselves. Some undoubtedly would be better off wild and free, or as you say not being born at all, but I doubt that that applies to thoroughbreds. I do not agree with you about horses having "poor living conditions" and I think that that is very harsh on the people who look after them.

I remember listening to the race on the radio as an 8 year old boy. I t was my first grand national and I've only missed one live since. When Red Rum won his second national l had to work. It's the greatest sports event in the world.

Controlled the horse after the slip which obviously stunned the horse momentarily. Good on the jockey...knew exactly what to do in a scary situation.

Interesting how Devon Loch sort of knuckled over on that near front leg. A loss of proprioception? Although the jockey said a yell from the crowd startled the horse, some think it was a muscle cramp, or a shadow causing the horse to think there was a jump. Wild finish in a wild race.

lots cite the water jump fence (shadow) - but the problem with the theory is that water jump fence is still there (with the sun often shining) and nothing happens to other horses year after year.

To all those people who think the horse broke its leg i say this: It didn't brake it's leg as you can see it walk off fine. If it had broken it's leg then it would be lying on the floor.

I agree, it didn't break it's leg but I saw horses running full speed with a broken leg and smash their leg to pieces (in a horse race). Sometimes they just run and run and the pain makes them running even faster...

If you watch closely it wasn't a shadow but rather he imagined he had to clear the water jump again (to his left). The horse recovered immediately and was walking soundly, and Francis checked his hind end after the recovery to make sure he was fine.

we could argue against this forever and not come up with the right answer (at least one that would satisfy both parties!). i am a 64 year old guy that worked for one of this country's best nh trainers, so i know my stuff!. i have watched this race at least 50 times and there is no doubt that devon loch jumped the shadow. he was coming to the end of a 4 and a half mile steeplechase and became confused. i love the sport, and this race in particular. these horses are bred to do this job

I am glad that the jockey stopped the horse from running instead of pushing on after he slipped. Poor dude and horse. They were both so close. What are the odds? Seriously.

For me it looked like that too, when they walked on, his front hoof kind of hangs in a terrible wrong position for a moment. That looked painful and defenetly not normal

Right... This film is from the 1956 grand national.......since then safety has been stepped up, jumps have been partially lowered and horses now have much more direct access to medical attention if required. It is simply stupid to judge the whole racing circle on one fall. The horse obviously slipped, and yes I know that racing has it's share of bad people who abuse and act recklessly towards their horses. But it shocks me how people can try to judge all racing on one slip... Racing is not that bad in comparison to the horrors that happen in practices in the rodeo for example. Everyone is welcome to their own opinion but please try to educate yourselves before judging.

Correct. I've visited a couple of big stables, let me tell you these animals are treated like someone's child. Many stables have passed through generations, I can name 3 or 4 current trainers that are named after their mum/dad's fav horse. Not the actions of someone who doesn't care to name their child after there fav. A lot of ill educated people don't realise in the main the horses love the life they lead and enjoy racing too most of the time, this is not a sport for politically correct buffons to bother with, if they spent 1 week in a proper stables they would realise how much love, care and good living goes into producing a horse like tiger roll to win the national. It wouldn't work if the horse had a hard life or was badly treated

He didn't jinxed it. In fact, he didn't do this in realtime. These are newsreels like the newsreels they use to show before a movie started. It was designed to be dramatic like that.

Devon Loch thought he was approaching a hurdle. If you look to the inner course, he jumps right where a hurdle exists on the inner course. The jockey of course does not adjust, and Devon Loch falls. Watch Devon Loch's hind legs curl , as if jumping a hurdle. If the Jockey was not so close to the rail, Devon Loch might not have seen the inside hurdle.

I would just like to say, that the horse was not hurt. The rider walked off crying because he was upset he would win, but after the horse slipped, he knew he wouldn't. And since the horse wasn't hurt, there is no issue with him walking away like that.

Wolfgang Martin Wow, calm down, would you? This kind of race is actually the one the most hoses die from, so yes it is horrible! I know this clip is from a "disaster" race, obviously a lot of horses didn't even finish the race etc., but come the fuck on. You can't be serious that you don't find this horrible? They ride the horses like it was a pure race, and force them over the hurdles like it was show-jumping - the horses run so fast they can't jump properly, and that's why so many riders crash. It is a horrible kind of race. It works better when races and show-jumping separated.

I'm a horserider myself, i know what i'm talking about and NO they don't run that fast + jump in the wild, there are barely any wild horses left so would you go open a book yourself before you speak? Thanks. The is animal abuse because they are FORCED to run this fast, they are FORCED to jump the hurdles, but in the wild they have a choice, and if you knew anything about anything you'd know that that don't run this long, in that speed + hurdles in the wild. So you say if they didn't race they'd be slaughtered? I'm embarrassed that you are so uneducated. There are much more to a horse life than competition.

karamel likør Being abused? You've obviously never stepped foot in a barn. Standardbreds are spoiled rotten daily by their caretakers. Taken on long walks to eat grass, stalls filled with straw up to their bellies and all the hay they could ever want in a day. All of these videos on here just display the reality of what could happen in this business. They never show the good side. They never show the bond a horse and their caretaker has. They don't show the special and emotional side of it when we bust our ass taking better care of our horses than we do ourselves and all our hard work pays off. This may have not been the greatest explanation, but why should we have to explain ourselves to a heartless person who doesn't know a fraction of what we do. Step in our shoes for a day and maybe you'll realize that our horses are special to us and are loved unconditionally. You'd also know that horses are meant to run, it's in their breed. Just like Standardbreds and thoroughbreds are meant to race. I bet you wouldn't have so much to say if you were at a window betting on these horses and they were making you money. Open your mind before your mouth

everything on a horse is rough, western pleasure, jumping, dressage, reining, barrels, trails, endurance. Everything is rough on a horses back and most horses in these events are started under saddle training at 2, yes racing makes it more likely to break down, but the risk is everywhere, i've seen one of our stables finest colts started training at three, no one one his back until 3 1/2, break down over a jump course at age 5, the rider was good and very light too.

i just got to say in australia our jumps are way smaller with smaller fields, and they are trained to go over the jumps lol! they are forced to have 3 jump barrier trails completed in decent time before they can go in a race! its not animal cruelty the horse wouldnt jump it if he didnt want to, they'd simply pull up or force there way to dodging it.

It was bent at the fetlock, which is where it should bend. When a horse is tired, it will sometimes stumble like that. The fact that he got up and walked away says it all. Tough horse! Hate racing.

The worst fall I've ever seen was Tiqris recently over a small hurdle. Absolubtely horrible - And Our Conor's tumble was bad too at Cheltenham. As the obstacles get lower so the speed increases and so falls over hurdles can and do kill. Some of the modifications to the course are a good thing (Raising the bottom side of Beechers, 40 horse maximum..) but you can never eliminate the risks. Lots of rain creating heavier (And so slower) going is probably the best safety measure !

Horse racing is a great sport, people view it as a sport where horses are put at a risk of getting killed, no its not one bit, the amount of knowledge and strategies there are to horse racing is amazing, people dedicate there whole life to the breeding of these horses and the training, and unfortunately sometimes horses are lost which is tragic, the grand national in my opinion is a great opportunity for less known trainers to have a shot at getting a title, but should be made less challenging.

a lot of these comments are very stereotypical. safety regulations have improved massively since around 49 years ago so there's no point in saying it was dangerous for the horses as it might have used to have been but not any more. I disagree with the grand national but I do agree that the horse did not break its leg and was perfectly fine to be able to simply trot away after the fall; it would be on the floor still if it did break it's leg

I think it's the Grand National that most people have some issue with, its much more demanding than any race, and the sheer number of horses means if they do fall, the risk of other horses tripping over them is more likely. Deaths are much more common in this particular race, and because it's so much more in the public eye, I think people get the idea that all racing is like this, even when it's not.

the horse was fine...he was running again later that year and lived for another 7-8 years after this race. the incident was scary to see but he came out of it alright.

I think you're right, the rear hooves slip, but you're wrong because it's pretty obvious the Devon tries to jump at that point. It's a combination of the horse going too fast to jump and the horse and rider being caught unawares (the horse catches a glimpse of the passsing white fence out the corner of his eye and thinks he suddenly needs to jump). The horses nor jockey's weight is distributed correctly for the traction needed at those speeds and the rear hooves slip. So no, they aren't stupid.

Devon Loch might have suffered from double vision. Look again and you will notice a fence in the adjacent course right in line where he attempted to jump a non-existent obstacle. . . after 4 and 1/2 miles it could easily have happened.

Horse races back then were so much better, people did it because they liked it, not just for money. Anyways some people need to stop complaining, he walked away just fine!

Totally agreed its not a matter of who WINS but who SURVIVES the Grand Pitfall. Shame on the queen mother for making such a callous and distant remark about his fall. Oops-- I forgot the royals aren't allowed to say "OH MY!!" and show real feelings.

Why is this being titled as disaster? It's sad that the actual front runner didn't win, but that's it? After this fall he kept on racing for a lil' while and never had any unusual moves like these showing again.
