There are a lot of people on the road who do not know the basis of how a car engine works (looks like all BMW drivers if this clip is typical). If you plough at speed through a ford, the engine will take in water instead of air resulting in a stalled engine at best and a ruined engine at worst.

Some things to think about. What is under the water that might have fallen off another vehicle and might wreck your tyres or bodywork? What happens when you plunge a hot catalytic converter into ice cold water? How fast do you need to got to make sure loads of water splashes up into the engine bay and gets sucked into the air intake and into your cylinders and destroys the engine? How slowly to you need to go to ensure not enough exhaust gas is coming out to prevent water pouring up the exhaust pipe and into your silencer? And finally, why are loads of people standing beside the flooded road with cameras rolling? Seems like these people are helping us answer some of those questions. 😂

When a warm gearbox or axle casing is suddenly chilled by deep water, the internal air contracts and will draw water into the internal oil, and destroy your transmission. This is why Land Rovers have high level sealed breather tubes factory fitted. Original Defenders are made to wade to the top of a wheel rim only.

Its really important 1 - to know how deep the water is, 2 - know where your air intake is. I tried this in my Ford Escape many years ago. Air intake is in behind the front bumper. I panicked and put my foot down. We ended up getting towed to a storage yard overnight. I went back the next day with father in law who is a mechanic. We unscrewed all the spark plugs, used a long screw driver with handitowels to dry inside each, started it up and eventually drove it home.

I was at a site that had a flood right next to it so the council closed the roads as it was a drain issue, for 2 weeks it was shut, cones and signs at the nearest junction that you HAVE to drive around with huge signs saying closed for flood, then just before the flood was a complete 2 layer wall of cones, sure the farmers were fine in tracters and even Defenders so we left them to it as we weren't local and they were BUT it got so bad with people moving the cones we would say to each one, "We are sick of putting the cones back so you have a choice right now in life, turn around or go through, just make sure you put the cones back so the next person has the same choice", you would then wait to see the headlights head into the dip, water noises, then a flicker and darkness again, 5 minutes later a dejected soul would trudge upto us to wait or try and stay warm where I would tell them how bad hydrolocking is and because your satnav was showing as closed the insurer would not be paying, was like a monty python sketch, after 2 weeks 12 cars had been written off, from used nissan micras to brand new week old Mercedes SLK(which was sat in water at window height for 2 days with other cars passing) and even a Porche Cayenne...all for the sake of 1 turn and 10 seconds extra, like momma used to say "stupid is as stupid does".

I would never take a BMW through a ford, the air intake is far too low. Everyone should know the safe wading depth of their vehicle and don't even try it if the marked level is above that depth. I can wade up to 700mm in my vehicle - that's about 28". The latest Land Rovers can wade up to 900mm (36" / 3'). And slow and steady is the rule.

It's almost as if the traffic cones had been placed there to stop people going through the flooded area, and someone else thought I'm going to move them out of the way so I can get passed.

What's even more mind boggling is the fact that, upon leaving the water, some of the drivers feel the need to accelerate the whole 12 meters to the crossroads only to have to stop. Th¡¢ka$p¡g$h¡†.

After watching these videos, I made the effort to find my engine air intake. Its right below the bonnet latch, so it's not very high. Either I will be going slowly through the water or take another route.

Why, after abandoning their vehicle in 3 foot of water, do they seem to always leave the ignition on, (as indicated by the windscreen wipers merrily doing their thing)? And as for leaving the door open...🤣🤣🤣

The bmw driver is a true genius. Those people are already far from smart to drive through that water but when you then have your car stalling and make weird sounds, to then continue to start the engine over and over and reving it...genius move. It`s like the driver intentionally wanted to make sure his car is a total write off. Like he hated his car and he wanted to make 100% sure it dies.
