Unbelievable Whale Encounter!

Without doubt this was the most incredible whale encounter of my career, which occurred on the final day of our three-week whale research project in Antarctica (Feb 2020). You'll want to watch till the end! 🐳

When I was young (47yrs ago), we used to get the lifesaving rubber ducky out to get close to the whales migrating. But, your experience was so extraordinary it reminded me how incredible they are!

Thank you so very, very much for sharing this video and your experiences with these whales. I've found the few times I've been close to humpbacks, though never as close as you were on this video, to be very spiritual.

How did the get those great underwater shots? Were submerged cameras part of their project/task?

The underwater shots were filmed from the boat, holding a GoPro.

I cannot imagine how being there touched you..that is just a fantastic experience...please do answer how you got the underwater and the aerial shots

The underwater shots and aerials were both filmed from the boat. A drone took the aerials and a handheld GoPro took the underwater shots. I wasn’t expecting to be filming underwater footage on this assignment, but fortunately I always have a GoPro stashed in my bag.

I was struck by the number and size of the sucker scars on the front of the whales made by squid and/or octopi.

Those circular marks are actually made by barnacles.

It is very dangerous for the whales that your boat motor is not switched off.

Hi Cindy. There’s no danger here, the engine is not in gear and the propellor is not spinning. We are following guidelines here, when a whale initiates an encounter with a vessel, you should try not to change anything. Our engine was on when the whales approached so it stayed on.
