The directors didn't tell the actors that the Sloth character was being played by a person. As far as they knew, it was a rubber mannequin, and so the reaction they got when he moved was from the first take, and completely genuine.

That knife strap-on is the visual that stayed with me for decades, lol.

One of the most uncompromising endings in movie history, and Fincher delivered it brilliantly. It's also wild when you realize that NONE of John Doe's murders actually happen onscreen - and the worst one (Lust) doesn't even show us the body, instead letting our imaginations provide all the horror.

They actually didn’t change his voice, Kevin Spacey is really good at impressions and voices. You can find a bunch of them online in old interviews. That’s all him

Fincher knew exactly what he was doing when he poorly lit this movie. The less you saw, the more you wanted to see what the dark was hiding. It's brilliant. Notice the only scenes in the movie that were well lit was when Mills' wife was in it ? (Even when it was only her "pretty head") Fincher was no dummy. Perfectly executed(excuse the pun) Gloom, doom, unthinkable ways to kill another human being. That's why this film is so memorable, the pace, the lighting, the script was perfectly acted out and that ending was perfect as devastating as it was. Some movies do not deserve a happy ending. This one was no exception. The perfect crime/thriller/horror movie.

Disturbing is definetly the word for this movie for sure. I have seen a lot of reactors that say well that is a movie I never want to watch again, I don't like feeling this depressed or having such a bad day. But they also tend to say it is an amazing movie and it lingers with people for a long time, I think we all have this movie staying rent free in our mind for a while at least the concepts of it and contemplating it. As someone coming from law enforcement and military background, what you know and see on a daily basis shapes how you see society, so I understand Summerset. People can drive around town and look at shops and parks, but I see places where I've been shot at, spat on, where a drug dealer lives, an alley where someone overdosed, a house where we found dead children. People do disgusting and terrible things to each other and over years of trying to stop it, you realize that no matter what you do on a small scale, the crime, pain and suffering people inflict on each other does not change. There's a reason our professions have a very high suicide and alcohol abuse rates.

The Bone Collector was another good one.. I believe it came out about the same time period.

The 7 deadly sins in order of the movie: Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, Pride Envy (John Doe), and Wrath (Mills)

Outstanding film. The final scene is built so well that, even though the reveal had been spoiled for me, it still had me holding my breath. John Doe is an absolute chess master. Mills being the sinner of "Wrath" was fairly telegraphed. I was head-faked into thinking that Somerset was guilty of "Envy", based on his discussion of his previous relationship that was "like a marriage", and the child he didn't get to have.

I clicked so fast when I saw this recommended. One of my favorite creators reacting to one of my favorite movies. Also, the term "serial deletor" is pretty ominous.

I remember seeing this in the theater. It was and still is the only time that after the movie was over EVERYONE just walked out in silence, thinking about how messed up the ending was. Brilliant and disturbing movie.

The thing about great lighting is that there are lighting tricks when you think their aren’t . That’s the art of lighting is knowing how to make it look like it isn’t even there.

The bad guy dies but wins, it's crazy

You are 99% more observant than pretty much anyone who has ever watched this. I'm impressed. Most of us were completely blindsided.

I don’t think it’s rare either. I just celebrated my 31st wedding anniversary. I’m in forever and am very happily married.

One thing that doesn't get noticed in this film very often is that John is a sick mirror to Mills and Summerset. On the one hand he is calm, patient and smart which are qualities of Summerset while also being jaded with humanity within "the city". He also has the ambition and recklessness to make a difference like Mills. By the end of the film I think Summerset saw more in common with John than David and it disturbed him. That's why he stayed on the force. There is also an art to the lack of gore in this film. Take the lust murder for example. The scene ratchets up the tension with the chaos and noise of the brothel, the obvious trauma of the client and the suspense. Then with a photo shown for a moment Fincher allowed your mind to do the rest. In fact that scene almost gets worse on second viewing because (at least in my case) the imagination gets more vivid Really great reaction dude. For another great David Fincher film Fight Club is another classic

I don't want to get into the whole a-word thing but my wife and I got together in HS. I was 17 and she was 16. For the next 12 years we always were careful and had said that we wouldn't want to keep a baby. The second she told me that she was carrying it changed for me. I told her how I felt and I think she carried our son, mostly, for me. At least until she held him and I knew she was going to love him fiercely. If she would have said that she didn't want to carry him i would have been disappointed but it really was her decision alone. I told her how I felt but also that I would stand by whatever she decided. I mean, I couldn't force her to give me a kidney if it meant saving my life. She also saw that pregnancy had changed her sister's body forever and she was scared. She ended up getting gestational diabetes and it was a hard 9 months for her. Our son turns 13 next month and we couldn't be happier.

In the end, we all felt wrath toward John Doe.

This movie is such a treat and though respected I still feel that it's underrated! I have played with the thought about Freeman being the villian and being so sick of the state of the city and the world that he would be the one doing the things to give them a case thay couldn't follow to the end.. but other than that this movie is on my top 20 and perhaps top 10 list.

I was 12 when this came out and saw it, i didnt get a lot of it, but i was completely taken by it, it made me want to learn how to write scripts because it was so spectacular.

Only movie I walked out of where like everyone was quiet. Stunned silence, it was kinda crazy. You could see everyone just take a deep breath as they exited the theater. Look at the person they were with and say that was crazy or that was messed up,or holy sh$&.

Since you liked this film , try Resurrection (1999).Stars Christopher Lambert , Robert Joy , and Leland Orser. (He was also in Seven as the guy who wore the "leather knife outfit") A seriously underrated SK film. Any one else seem it?

Back before KZfaq it was difficult to get your hands on movie previews. Most of the time if you saw one it was in the theater watching a different movie. during the nineties at least whenever a new movie came out the first couple times they show the preview they would show the whole theatrical preview during a commercial break and then after the first time or two it would be a heavily edited version of the preview at least on TV until the movie came out. They had announced that this preview was going to play and I recorded it on videotape and is one of the most engaging movie previews I've ever seen and I watched that preview a million times before the movie came out. Then I went to the movie theater to watch the movie and was absolutely Blown Away but how good it was. I've been a huge David Fincher fan ever since

I think sloth in general may be the least corrosive at the end of the day. Self destruction is certainly a net negative, but if it's only self (as much as anything -can- be), I'll take it over the others

I was fortunate enough to have seen this in the theatre during its first run (yes, I'm old). The lighting was *perfect* on the big screen. This movie is meant to be watched that way. Perhaps that addresses your small gripe about that.

Yea, I don't think any jury would really convict him. While he is guilty of 2nd degree murder, the circumstances would definitely be taken into consideration. Every single juror would be able to put themselves into his shoes about the person who had just murdered your wife and child. The gloating on the police recordings would definitely be played and he'd be sent home.

I think that Morgan told her that if she's going to get an abortion then never tell him is a fair protection of his emotions...in this particular situation. If you don't want the baby then not bringing the husband into the knowledge (in some situations, but not all) might the wisest choice. In other situations then the father ought to know, but in this one it MIGHT be right to protect the husband's emotional well being.

Luck Number Slevin, a 2006 movie is a great watch.

The director, David Fincher, had gotten his movie debut directing Alien 3. He was an up and coming director and the studio was in control and that was a terrible experience for him. So with this movie he made sure he was in control and that certainly paid off. Handsomely. There was one other noteworthy conflict between Fincher and the studio/producers on another later project regarding a single line of dialog. In the scene after a couple have slept together the female character said "I want to have your abortion". That crossed the line, Fincher could do whatever he wanted but the producers were adamant that that line had to go. So Fincher made an agreement with them. He would remove the line but he would write a replacement and whatever he came up with, the studio HAD to accept it. They agreed and so it went. If you want to know what replaced it you just have to watch 'Fight Club', in my opinion one of the best movies of the nineties.

This was the movie that after watching in the theatre had everyone debating. 1/2 saying I would've killed him.. .1/2 say you let him win. What was interesting is no one was saying you can't kill people. Everyone was OK with that... they just didn't want him to win.

I have always maintained that I agree with the detective in the beginning when asked if the kid saw it. What resolution could possibly come from knowing if the kid saw his mother kill her husband? Especially if the kid is now dead because he was killed by the mother. What’re you send a dead kid to therapy, or just simply walk around harboring the knowledge that he most likely did witness his mother kill his father with no way to resolve it? Come on now people. I happen to believe Somerset asked for his own peace of mind, and not because he’s knows he’ll be able to do anything about it. He knows he’s been working in that hellish environment for so long that at that point he’s grasping at straws just to find any kind of peace of mind.

Highly recommend getting the special edition Blu-ray I'm not sure if the forecast out yet but doesn't matter there's like 4 commentaries on the disc the making of features are spectacular definitely should be owned as a physical copy I recently watched it with my son he watched it for the first time and it blew his mind.. I'll never forget seeing it in the theater and then I watch the film often music the lighting the whole damn reduction is one of David fincher's greatest films!! As well as Zodiac another one I highly recommend opening the physical copy.

I don’t know if you know or not but, Morgan Freeman character name is “Detective Alex Cross", off the James Patterson book character. Well there’s another movie called "Kiss the Girls”, Morgan Freeman is also on that film as "Detective Alex Cross”. My opinion is both of them movies are tied together in some weird way. 16:40 that's the thing, people complain about cops being trigger happy, but they never consider the horrors those cops witness on a daily basis, horrors committed by, you know, people. Cops alone aren't to blame for the rise in "police brutality", civilians share just as much blame, if not more.

John Doe is a judgement of society. Are we guilty as a society for accepting these sins as ok or committing them ourselves? If we are guilty, what punishment do we deserve? If we absolve Mills for his wrathful sin in the end, do we really care about right and wrong? Where do we, individually and as a society, draw the line?

Most people agree that David shouldn’t have deleted John but I would have pulled the trigger for sure. “If you do this, he will win” WIN? He already won. He took the life of his child and wife. People’s lives aren’t a game. What is he winning? Who am I trying to be a better person for? John Doe? David did exactly what I would have done. Like you said….he had to go!!
