1, that metal panel is actually cardboard. 2, that cardboard piece is indeed supposed to be removed. 3, you are not supposed to microwave cans or any metal.

+Immortalyse Cans have aluminium in them and they make microwaves spark and short out. Hence the OP's question.

because of how the can is shaped, its round. its like the old saying about putting a spoon in the microwave vs a fork, microwaves like straight edges like on the prongs of a fork and then they spark between the tips, whereas with a spoon or a can there are no straight edges, so although still stupid its not going to fuck the microwave up as much/explode.

to all of you thinking wtf about the can in the microwave, don't do it, just cos this guy did it doesn't make it a good idea. round metal objects tend to be ok in the microwave, but you will kill your microwave if you do it on a regular basis, and don't ever do it if the metal object has straight edges on it, cos that is even more stupid. also nice microwave peter
