I've used a garden journal for many, many years. Mine is a spiral bound, hard cover with totally blank pages. Color of the whole thing is like a paper grocery bag. I love that it is blank because I can record anything I want! The weather, when I plant, what I plant, dates, what worked, what didn't, what to do next year, varieties of what I plant, even a diagram of my garden and where I planted things so I can rotate the next year! I record what I would NOT DO next year like don't plant pole beans because I can never reach to the top! If I want to learn about gardening, I buy a gardening book. A journal is to record my personal garden journey and how things went that year. By having blank pages I have the freedom to write just what I want. I create it! I a l also have some printed pictures I've taken - those are my favorite! I can use as many pages as needed. I've included recipes I've made with my veggies too. Sometimes I glue an empty seed packet on a page if I love the variety - like Sungold tomatoes! There is so much freedom just writing on a blank page. I've created a book by the time I'm done!

What a lovely method! Just a blank notebook with nothing but space for creation. I love it! Do you have a method of finding your previous notes? I'm guessing they are simply in chronological order, but if you need to find something specific how do you go about that?

I could see myself using #2 by Joy Kieffer. I am also a bit ocd and just use a 3-ring binder, with the clear outer sleeves. (I actually have a few 3-ring binders for other notes on perennials, seed inventory, to-do lists for each season broken down into month that I reference to, and a binder of general plant info notes when I research plants that I have) In my main binder the front cover is my garden map with areas labeled and beds #ed. Behind it are over/underlays for tracking crop rotation and ideas. The back cover holds a monthly goal sheet of the bigger projects going on. The inside first page is a to-do list for the week. There are 9 of us in the home so it is easy to see what needs done or what had been completed by anyone (they initial once taste is done) I have indexed sections that cover areas of our garden, and property (outlined on cover map) if there are beds or trees, structures or anything there is a page for it that activity is logged. Bed 3 may have been seeded with a cover crop, first bloom date noted and turn in date estimated. A little not on wether it needs any other amendment, or what to plant. For a tree there may be a note to watch for worms or disease, when to prune, when flowered. For a structure it might have when and by whom built it or purchased, when it was painted last or a repair or upgrade made. It works for my family and we always seem to get things done by just looking in the front cover and seeing what needs accomplished. We will be moving at the end of summer so I plan on making a new one for our new home, which may end up having even more family members to help keep an efficient running homestead.

That sounds like a really good system! Thanks for sharing your ideas! I struggle with the idea of bound books because they lack flexibility and customization. I like your 3-ring binder idea.

You can get the Gardener's Journal directly from the publisher, Lee Valley Tools, in Canada for $45 USD and free shipping to the US. It's ridiculous what others will charge for "almost new" copies of this book. I'm a firm believer in this log and i use it along with the second one you showed. I did make copies of pages and keep what I need in a three-ring binder with tabs for years. The use of two journals is great for cross-referencing and it's been beyond helpful to me. I love this video. Subscribed.

I was just going through Amazon and the garden planner/journals and most of them had pics of the front and back cover. Some reviewers put a few pics that let me see what kind of pages might be in it. Then I thought “KZfaq”!! Someone is bound to have reviewed a planner or two that is NOT an app, and I found your review. Thank you for going through them all because it told me all I needed to know. I’d love to say you saved me some money, but I still ended up ordering 4 of the more detailed ones you reviewed. 🤣 I rely heavily on Amazon reviews for anything I order, but most reviews said “good beginner garden planner” or “great for the experienced gardener”. That just wasn’t helping me because even as a beginner gardener, I don’t want to just plant it and write down when I planted it or watered it. I want to keep records that will help me know where I’ve gone wrong or patterns that may help. Again, thank you for this review, it was very helpful.

Thank you so much for this review. I am starting my first garden and am glad to have come across the idea of a garden journal right away. But like you, I have been looking for something just right, but it is hard since most don't let you look inside much. So I can't tell you how much I appreciate this review. Many of these I saw, some I hadn't. I think I still may stick to the original plan and create one myself so it will morph into exactly what I want over the next few years. Did you decide to go with the 10 year journal? Or have you created your own yet? I would love to see what your experience and creativity has come up with.

I'm so glad this was helpful! Yes, I've been working with the 10 year one. It is pretty comprehensive. The only thing it was missing for me was a reminder section at the beginning of each month for things to do next year. But there is plenty of space to write that in the daily sections.

I just bought the 10-year journal after as much reviewing as I could manage in a day haha! This video sold me on it. It sure seems to be the highest quality and something that could truly last a decade. I literally can't wait for it to arrive!~

I'm glad I could help and I hope you enjoy your journal! That's one I've been using and it's been a lot of fun. I just leave it open on my extra desk so that I can quickly write down what is blooming and what's done that day.

I have the five year journal. It is one page per year of each month. Ie: January has yr1 yr2 yr3 yr4 & yr5 same for each month. Feb has 5yrs etc i went through the journal and marked each page of the month Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, etc. Seems ok if you understand each page is a month yr1, yr2,yr3,yr4,yr5. Im using it as it will be easy to look back on what happened this month the year before. So far, so good. Love to see what you're going to design. I hate the same page, which is just repeated. I could do that on my printer. But that was the only type of gardening book I could find on the market. Garddeners like myself want: places to put info like: temperature ...... wet/ dry/ cold / frost/ Seeds sow inside or direct Days to harvest .... or expected harvest date. Depth to sow seeds and distance apart. And a place for notes the gardener wants to make Good luck with your design. Kind regards, allotment, gardener, Kim.

Thank you so much for this video! I’m also in the Inland NW, a bit south of Spokane Valley! I can easily see myself using The Garden Journal/Planner/Logbook and copying the pages to put in a 3 ring binder. That way I can add extra lined paper for personal notes for over the years and be able to separate my veggies, fruits, and flowers into different sections. As well as a large “what NOT to do” section for myself because I tend to make the same mistake 3 years in a row before I remember to not do whatever it was 😂

You book is probably already done but as an ADHDer, I'd love a section of: tools and seeds and other items I already own & where they go during winter (out of sight, it ceases to exist to me)

I had started a section in my Happy Planner to journal for my garden but I'm too new to gardening to know what information I needed to track. So I ordered the The Garden Journal, Planner & Log Book - by Joy L Kieffer, (the bigger version) before I watched your video and I think I'm pretty happy with my choice based on your review.

I'm glad it was helpful! That feels to me like the best choice for new and novice gardeners. I like the big fat book best, but that one is really intimidating and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wasn't already a hardcore plant nerd.

My dad was a landscaper who specialized in flowers and ponds (with plants- water lilies, etc) and rock gardens (homemade rock beds with no concrete/cement- just naturally fitting rocks together) and so I've always been into gardening. My husband and I bought our home 4 years ago and I've slowly been working on our gardens each year. I'm to the point I need to keep track of things, hence needing a journal//log book. I'll keep an eye out in case you make one some day! 🙂 Thanks for your reviews!

Thank you for an informative video. Really admired the 10 year gardener's journal by Lee valley, but it's not available here in the UK. Not much else available of a similar comphrehensive quality. Had been thinking about creating my own journal but have only listed what could be included so far... Interesting to see what you come up with

Thanks for your encouraging words! Sorry to hear that the 10 year one isn't available in your area. I found the publisher's info after filming this and it was published in Canada. I hope you do create your own! Do you have a way to self-publish in the UK? Here in the states Amazon is allowing anyone to self publish anything, so anyone can become an author and the big hurdle of finding a publisher is gone. I have several friends who have already done it. There are strings attached of course, but they are reasonable. If your book is good and you market it well, it's pretty easy to sell it on Amazon and start earning your royalties.

Interested to know if you crafted your own journal. For my own interests, I’d find it most useful if it was organized (or at least had a section) by plant, where I could keep track of the benefits and negatives of each plant, when I planted, quantity of harvest, if the flavor is good, quantity of harvest vs effort expended, diseases that develop, etc. One plant per page would provide enough space for all the entries I’d add throughout the year. Also, something I’d find EXTREMELY HELPFUL is a section for winners and losers…plants to avoid at all costs and plants to definitely plant again. Many times I remember a plant but I’m not sure if it made an impact on me because it was really tasty or because it was a complete flop.

Excellent ideas! Thank you! No, this idea has been placed firmly on the back burner for the foreseeable future. The big green journal met my needs fairly well. But it's still in my book of ideas to work on someday, and I have a friend that does publish books, and has already published her own simple garden journal. (It's called WTF Did I plant? A gardening Journal" and it's quite similar to what you described. I'll probably pass these ideas to her and showcase her projects!

I prefer to do my own. Dot grid paper. Makes it easy to do lists, diagrams and charts, but also easy to write in. A simple index and numbered pages. And away I go.

Nice! Have you considered self publishing? I have a friend who self published her journal on Amazon. I have not started mine, it's on the burner behind the back burner at the moment behind several dozen other projects lol. I found that the big green journal was everything I needed so I'm just using that for now.

Yeah but each page is a form that you fill out. It wouldn't work to fill out half a page at a time.

All too American - hardiness zones? - I have just settled on a blank notebook but I like the big green book for MY ocd! But not listed on Amazon now.

LOL, I'm pretty sure Europe used a hardiness zone map too, but not sure about other areas. Keep checking for the green one, it wasn't listed the first time I looked for it either. I think it's reprints seasonally, but I'm not sure.
