I finally just got my very first Hinderer folder which is the tri-way XM-18 BOWIE in S45VN!!! I mean i have the ZT Hinderer folders and fixed blades and i have actual Hinderer fixed blades but ive always wanted to get myself either an XM-18 or XM-24 and the bowie blade shape just tickles my pickle sooo yeah hahaha I'm in love! Granted i was forced to get an orange G10 handled one as it was literally the only one left but that can easily be changed and will be soon enough! Probably some that red and black fat carbon fiber and i will also be shopping for a deeper carry pocket clip for her...

Last comment and I’ll proof read this time. If these knives were as cheap as all the complainers would like them to be nobody would want one. Quality would be garbage and the whole reason we love these knives would be lost. Make them 600 and weed out the sog people.

Wish he would make more in S45VN.. I know people consider 20CV to be more premium but the toughness of S45VN just makes more sense on Hinderer’s knives and their intended purpose. Heck I wish he went back to S35VN for most of his knives, and to be honest CPM 154 would be ideal for his knives.

Do you have a rattling sound from the washer support (that sits above the flipper when closed)? Mines rattles when open on the xm18 3.5, normal?

I just got my first Hinderer two days ago. XM-18 3.5 in FDE scale and S45vn. I did a little research into the steel first and it seemed like a good choice. I'm left handed so Hinderer knives never appealed to me, but I have just about every other "iconic" blade (Chris Reeve, Strider, Hoback, etc) so I thought I'd add at least one Hinderer to my collection. I like it. A little awkward to carry for me but it's well made and feels good in hand.

@@metal_complex I carry it like I used to carry the original Paramilitary. It's the only time I carry tip down. I still carry it in my left pocket but tip up backwards. If that makes sense. I started carrying knives way back before companies took LH people into consideration. I do prefer being able to swap the clip to LH and carry tip up though. I might eventually get one of those Ti scales and have my friend that runs a machine shop drill it for LH tip up carry. The flipper tab is a little in the way in my pocket as it's at the top carrying it this way. That's way down the road though. Want to try different things as is before I drop another $200 on a scale.

S45VN is quite intriguing. I'd personally sacrifice a bit of corrosion resistance for some more toughness, if iwere to have the same edge retention as S30V.

Seriously, I got the bug after getting a secondary. I’m out for a new one now. Always been grails for me. Never thought I’d own one when I first got into knives. Everything just looks so damn good. Love the look of the hardware and it’s really a great package man. Won’t be disappointed

Doesn't matter what people do with their knives or anything else. Its their money. They can use it, not use it, take it to dinner, toss it in a volcano, whatever. After it's purchased, it's of no one's concern except the buyer's.

You guys should really check out pvk.com; they ship worldwide unlike Blade HQ, benchmade an other big name Brands who are to afraid to bend a few ridiculous knife laws and restrictions to satisfy their customers worldwide. They carry only the top as well as customs and are based out of Las Vegas Nevada

I’ve always liked RH and most of his personal designs, even though I can’t afford them, I just don’t understand why some are tip up carry and others are tip down!

They come from the factory tip down. I always switch mine afterwards.

Honestly, I’ve always found that S30V is easier to sharpen than S35VN. That and it takes a much better edge. S35VN always takes this edge that feels sharp but really isn’t. I honestly hate it.

Hinderer is great till you want to use them. Heat treat is well below what it should be and edge geometry is non-existent. The warranty is non existent. They will not take care of your product. I had a blade I sent in for sharpening when I first got into midtechs and they called me that they dropped it and blade broke. With it not being under warranty there was nothing they could do. Several emails later and calls with lawyers I got my knife back. Brushed that off till some of the new improvements with the tri way pivot and seeing the new steels they've been trying hoping heat treat was better and better edge geometry. Went to bladeshow and handled a few xm18s. Fell in love with a plain old drop point. It had lock rock and lock slipped from just pressing my thumb on the spine of the knife. Rick himself told me that's user error. Showed him the knife and he went off on me because I'm not the knife maker.

20cv has better edge retention and corrosion resistance (not much more corrosion resistance). S45VN is substantially tougher and easier to sharpen. Neither steel is really "better". Its more of a preference thing. This is assuming both are optimally heat treated 👍

Get a ZT 0562!!! It will definitely scratch that Hinderer itch and for about half the price!! I got the carbon fiber one and I LOVE it, but I kind of wish I would’ve gotten the full titanium version instead for $20 more. I just ordered a microtech troodon signature series w/ the hellhound blade and in carbon fiber from DLT Trading and I CAN’T WAIT!!!

The steel on the knife in thumbnail is S45VN. The heat treat issue was only with his 20CV/M390. You clearly didn't know that. If you're going to jump on a bandwagon, at least know the story. This drama is old. The community has moved on.

@@metal_complex Well I seem to remember that some S45VN’s were tested soft and from my own experience my XM18 dulls pretty quickly. Also, Neeves found that the Magnacut Project X’ was a bit on the soft side (granted it wasn’t tested), so it’s seems to be Hinderer’s formula. In any case, hitting people with cease and desists when criticizing products it outrageous. Should be even to Hinderer fanboys. Also I’d like to add Rick is a tall man.

@super_sigma_ No, the issue was specifically with his m390 and even then his target range is 59-61 which is the industry standard. Ideally, people wanted to see 60-62. His S45VN and Magnacut are generally within spec but sometimes people have different hardness preferences. There was no other drama with any other steel through Hinderer Knives. I agree about the cease and desist stuff but I covered this story here on my channel a while back. It's done and over with. Keeping drama alive is pointless. Take it to the forums or Facebook.

@super_sigma_ also it isn't his "formula". He can only change the heat treatment and geometry. The edge geometry of hinderer knives is very thick. This is what makes people think they're "dull". They just have bad slicing geometry.

@@metal_complex Alright, it was a tongue-in-cheek remark I made initially, not here to keep drama alive. Although I still think some blades are on the softer side, especially the new Magnacut stuff. The optimum is around 62.5 HRC and Hinderer's is rumored to be quite a bit lower. And my XM18 is a slicer, but still thick behind the edge, I know. It just seems to lose its biteyness too quickly. Anyway, love the channel. Keep it up :)
