7 ай бұрынThe Fairyloot December YA box 'Artefacts of Power' was a bit of a miss for me, unlike Illumicrates box for December I feel like Fariyloot has overlooked end of year content. This did not feel like a wintery, festive, end of year box. I also would have loved the Egyptian theme to come through more. This should have been a box that I absolutly loved, but I don't rate this up there with good boxes from this year.

Book lover by day, Booktuber by night. I'm always reading some kind of YA/Fantasy/Sci-Fi book. I live in the North East of England, have a useless archaeology degree (thanks Tomb Raider for the inspo), and when my nose is not in a book you can guarantee I'm off travelling. I totally agree about the end papers and the art on the dust jacket. The dust jacket is gorgeous and I really wish that art was on the end papers.

I like the box and the book!! I might try and trade my book for the owlcrate editon though cause i do love their edges. I don't love Christmas, so im glad this is a normal box. With things useful all year! That match the book to. (Travel case and adventure? Check!) Look up how to wear like hermes scarfs etc, you will get a tonne of videos!! It looks the same size (gucci sell them too i believe). There are some great ways to use the scarfs!! If you ever need money btw plenty of people buy those tarot cards. People are gonna go nuts for the fourth wing ones 😅

I had to pick between Owlcrate & FL since they did the same book & now I’m SO GLAD I picked Owlcrate. I would have been so disappointed by this box & the Owlcrate edition of the book is SO MUCH BETTER.

Since I have the fairyloot combo box I sold this book and kept the OwlCrate one, it is signed and the edges are stunning

As woman of South American descent I just want to say a big THANK YOU for putting in those resources showing why Isabel may be a problematic author. Side note the UK version (idk if includes fairyloot) supposeyhave the author’s drawn map of Egypt and she (the publisher ? we don’t actually know who messed up) mixed up lower and upper Egypt and I saw someone else comment “well she can’t get her own culture right why would she get another one right” which I thought was amusing.

I hate the digital signatures. Adds zero value. If the author isn't going to sign it for real, what's even the point. To me, a digital signature is just saying "so, in case you want to know how the author signs their name, it looks like this, but this isn't a real signature so who cares." LOL

I would rather have a digital signature than no signature at all. Authors that sign tens of thousands of books for sub boxes or limited runs or even at events can and have developed horrible carpal tunnel in their hands and wrists. Some of the signatures don’t even look like they were signed, just scribbled on the page. I have seen authors begin signing book plates months in advance to a release in order to provide quality signatures on book plates for their books with lower risk of injury. A digital signature gives the edition a verified copy of the author’s signature, in all its looped and dramatic glory, and at the added benefit or not injuring the author or disappointing the consumer because it’s not a possibly hurt, rushed scrawl. Plus, the fumes of the sharpies (preferred marker for most publishers) and all the packaging and waste of 250 markers versus an extra bit of printing on the page, overall it feels more considerate to have a digital signature in my opinion.

@@ayragon You are definitely right about some of the legit signatures looking like an illegible scrawl. I have more than once paid extra (plus postage from the UK - ouch) to get a signed copy of a certain book only to have it arrive with some vague scribble on the signature page. Pretty disappointing for what you pay to get a signed copy. I once was at a signing with Sarah J. Maas and she had a special pen that was kind of like a finger crutch that lets you sign over and over without the fatigue to your hand that you would otherwise experience. Maybe those just haven't caught on in the wider publishing world. I was at an event last year and Barbara Kingsolver wasn't signing and I asked why and her publisher said she isn't allowed to sign any more books per her doctor because of the strain on her hand so you're definitely right about the potential for harm.

The other unfortunate thing about the digital signatures is that I’ve seen a LOT of resellers of these special editions saying the books are signed and not specifying that they’re digital- so people are buying them expecting a regular signature and getting a printed one.

I'm currently reading Legendborn and I'm finding it okay, I am disappointed in the bookends though there is so much that they could have done with them, I also agree that they didn't need to add more bookends, I've been subbed since May 2022 and I have 3 sets now from FL and 1 fron IC and no where to use any of them

@@Wanderness I didn’t get them ones but I’m okay with that as I’m not a LOTR or The Hobbit fan, I have the Jade City set from IC and then the circus set, the Gideon IX set and now the Legendborn ones from FL. My sister uses the Jade City ones and I use the circus ones on the bedside table to hold my library books but the other 2 are still in the boxes for when I move and have more room for book cases lol.

I loved the tea light holder and the packing cube. The book was a little disappointing overall. It’s a lovely cover but I was expecting more and those end papers…👎🏻 The reverse cover is gorgeous but would have looked much better if they put the title and such to make it look like a proper book cover.

OK - I'm in the US and I got my box yesterday, and there definitely was no laptop bag. I always thought everyone got the same things. All the other items were the same but instead of the laptop bag I got a pack of 2 pens with a quote/pattern on them. They were okay. I can't say either one of us is ahead of the other as far as that goes.

Im in the US too and I didn't get the bag or even pens. I ran to check the box and I was suppose to get a packing cube but it didn't come with that either 😢

OK I was wrong about the pens - those were from my OwlCrate which also came yesterday. But I did not get the "packing cube" at all. Same as @ashtonaster2578 said below. Usually if something isn't going to be included they send you an email and tell you it will be in the next box but I didn't get any notification like that. Looks like it's time to email FairyLoot 🙄

They sent emails to all the US subs, that travel case didn’t come in time for the packing at the US distribution center, so it will be in January’s box.

Loved the scarf and the book mainly. The endpapers though we’re hideous and just didn’t tie in at all. Great redesign of the cover though. Definitely agree with use of green on the sprayed edge. The tarot cards I wasn’t keen on as have seen better art for these particular characters and like you said it is way too early for them to be appearing. FairyLoot final box of year I would give…7.5/10 I think 🤔 Anyway have an amazing day my lovely, look out for post on Wednesday x

I wish they had put the name of the book on the spine of the reverse dust jacket because I would have definitely flipped it. I didn't care so much for what they did on the front of the dust jacket it's kind of boring.

I am disappointed with the cover redesign 😕 It looks too plain and unfinished to me. I really liked the original one better. And the endpapers are a letdown too. The naked hardcover is stunning though!

I personally love the end papers, I think it's gorgeous. I'm glad they didn't go with the more cartoonish character art thats on the authors letter. The scarf was absolutely gaudy, and not in a good way. Love the box it came in, but that scarf? Hard pass for me. The book was gorgeous, and I'm happy to at least have a Howls Moving Castle item that isn't a paper item. Being in the US, I didn't even get the storage cube in my box....Needless to say, this box was seriously underwhelming to unbox.

The author’s first book basically put the indigenous ppl as bad and backward. And given it’s based on her Bolivian roots is really fucked up. Idk your background, but as an Andean woman I can tell you even those of us who are mixed look down highly on indigenous ppl to the point calling someone an Indian is an insult.
