I love these attic finds, it feels like Christmas for me. I’ve just bought a small pile of Triang stuff off eBay for £35. 3 x locos 2 x coaches 5 x wagons A pile of track plus other bit and bobs. Even though it’s Triang I still get excited.

That must be the best birthday present ever. About 42 years ago I bought a job lot of kit built metal locos and rolling stock, all sorts some old Triang locos and wagons. i had no idea was was included. It came from someone who had recently died. I have not really done much with it all since. A couple of the metal engines run and all the Triang ones I got working. In there is the top for the water tender of a Garret loco. If you get around to refurbishing your Garrett and you want the top it is yours Sam. I can send you a photo.

Sam, as an American railfan, I'll clarify some things for you. The first is those "made is Yugoslavia" locos. They were made by an American company called AHM. You were close on the Mehano statement, though. Mehano bought some AHM tooling when they went out of business. Next is what you called those "dash-2s". Those are actually M630s built by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW). The first is Santa Fe (obviously,) and the second one (the striped) is Canadian National. The Santa Fe and Amtrak locos are both AHM models of the Electro-Motive Division's (EMD) FP-45. Finally, that steam engine is some sort of American-based tank engine (like the S100s you Brits have). Looks to be some sort of die cast model, probably made in the 50's or 60's. Hope this helps, and greetings from 'Murica!

Quite a history there on model railway equipment. The Ks Garrett is quite a find, renovated a couple of those in the past, rebuilding the valve gear and motor was quite interesting. Worth hanging onto for a future project.

@colinonbike

Sam'sTrains hi Sam, if the driving wheels/chassis is square (place the model on glass to see there is no rocking motion) then you have a head start. The motors were rubbish, so it's worth getting a combined motor gearbox combo; plenty of room under the hood so you can fit a decent motor. The valve gear can be rebuilt with as long as you have all the linkages, you may need rivets to put the four sets together. They are very heavy when finished.
@colinonbike
@colinonbike 4 жыл бұрын
Meant to say replace the wheels if they are the Ks originals, the wheel centre was often not in the centre of the wheel😂😂😂😂

The dash-2 engines are based roughly on the American Locomotive Company C-630. The red and silver Santa Fe and the silver Amtrak engines are Electro-Motive Division FP-45's. Also with getting into O-scale I recommend checking out a free online magazine called the O Scale Resource. While it does focus around North American modeling occasionally layouts from the UK are featured and there is a wealth of information in terms of how-to articles, including building a brass steam locomotive.

No HO EMD F45 model runs well besides the Athearn/Athearn Genesis ones. William might have one built by AHM/IHC(cheap garbage) whereas RJ29 might have an Athearn one.
@williambabcoke248
@williambabcoke248 4 жыл бұрын
@@ecpcharles Yeah pretty much. But even athearn hasn't been too good on the performance side of things as of late. They seem to run good, but there pulling power is awful compared to other mid to high their manufacturers such as Kato, MTH, and BLI.
@ecpcharles
@ecpcharles 4 жыл бұрын
@@williambabcoke248 I think as long as it runs smooth and quiet, and have slow speed control, its a fine model. Diesels usually run in consist in the prototype, so Id prefer if my diesels didn't have the power to pull the wallpaper off my walls. Instead, these days you get engines that are too powerful to the point where if you run them together un-speed-matched, one will pull the other, which damages the motors in both engines due to stalling.
@williambabcoke248
@williambabcoke248 4 жыл бұрын
@@ecpcharles yeah but the problem is that athearn locos usually cost the same as Kato and MTH locos. And MTH locos are perfectly speedmatched to each other so you don't burn out the motors.

Years ago, a teacher I knew was retiring and cleaning out 35 years of stored things. She gave me a large plastic tub full of HO train equipment. It was the 1776 Anniversary set from Bachmann! Apparently the young person that brought it into school was using it for a project and left it behind. I wish it had its box but the set is complete. It does appear to have either another set with it or just some additional cars. I haven't done anything with it. Eventually I will give it to my Grandson.

Inside was a bunch of great locos and also a full blue pullman set, lima, however I am missing the dummy car from the end and one centre car has a broken wheel set. 17:16 looks like the LMS Fury. The STEF wagon is definitely Lima, that style of anti-sag design is typical Lima. Available in large amounts on model train fairs, also came in Interfrigo (German) and Orangina (Dutch) liveries, yours is most likely from a French starter set. The Esso tanker is also Lima, but with UK style bogies fitted. The small green one is also Lima,but i have never seen that, maybe because everyone bought the big starter sets with the German 218 or Dutch 1220 The blue locomotive at the end is a Belgian class 150 (also Lima), and starter set material. 2:46 that looks like a Royal Scot or Patriot class. Might make a good flatbed load. 6:59 I agree that's something worth framing 17:36 so there is a complete garratt loco in there. 24:31 that is a Swiss loco, which you can tell by the "SBB CFF FFS" on the side 25:32 the custom livery reminds me of The Milwaukee Road livery used on their E7 and FT units (which Lionel used on their MILW F3 at the same time as this Tri-Ang was made) 26:59 that looks like an Alco c630, either a Rvarossi or Roco model, as well as Mehano. 28:32 nice to see an old CN model. 29:52 that looks like an FP45. Seeing those three big American diesels is pretty neat in any lot, but even rarer that you found them in the UK. The mixture of American and European models is quite neat! The blue Santa Fe Mehano engine is an ALCo 630 which was used in heavy freight service. The Amtrak and Santa Fe engines are EMD FP45s. Those engines were based on the SDP45s which were themselves passenger versions of the existing SD45 freight locomotives. They were powerful but they had a tendency to derail during their time in passenger service. Most were refitted and downgraded to freight service where they remained until retirement.

I think the mystery LMS kit is a parallel boiler Patriot, the Patriots and the Scots had one "real" cab window and one dummy cut-out, and when rebuilt into the Stanier 6Ps only the Patriot received "full" cab windows.

There are some very simple techniques for removing rust, i have a japanese saw (i know how it ended up in Brazil) that was very rusty. I removed the rust by immersing it in weak acid, leaving it there for a few hours and then cleaning it. I used very cheap vinegar to do it. Maybe it would work for rusty wheels.

28:00 That tank engine is a H. K. Porter, Inc 0-6-0ST, also known as a dockside switcher saddle tank. It was used in the US mainly for dockside shunting and mining work (as the name implies). Fun fact about that type of tank engine: One of the engines, Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal #15 (B.E.D.T. #15), was bought by the Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania in 1998 and was converted into the first, and so far only, real steaming replica of Thomas the Tank Engine in the United States. For a while, this engine would go around the entire country and participate in the "A Day Out with Thomas" events before the dummy engines were built and used in its place. Even though its nationwide service has ended, Strasburg still brings it out for its own "A Day Out with Thomas" event, as well as other events hosted for the kids throughout the year.

The stickers (Bosch and ferodo) are from old school scalextric. They went on the plastic safety barriers. You got a lot of Lima. Perfectly serviceable and good detail for RTR in the day. Main line did what I thought was good quality at the time. All pile of sh#% compared with the awesome detail now. Even the Mohano is probably better quality! Lol. Although I got a lot of mileage out of a Lima Deltic train set back in the late seventies early eighties. The o gauge loco kit looks most like a patriot or un rebuilt Scot just going on the firebox shape. In the eighties you could only get the Beyer-Garrett as a kit. I think there was two or so makers of them.

The Mobil tank and Ford wagons are HO scale, 1:87 or 3.5mm:foot. these were part of Lima's range of British HO scale models in the 1970s. The Hornby intermediate carriage which you described as being one of the cleanest models in this collection is an interesting item. While the height and width of this carriage are 00 scale the length is actually HO scale. This was because so these carriages could more easily negotiate Hornby curves. I presume but have yet to check if the power car is also HO scale length. I have several of these Hornby mark 3 carriages which are in the process of being converted to true HO scale carriages so these can operate with Lima HO scale mark 2s.
