About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

A friend just buyed an 220 string guitar. Its fretboard is so big, you need a keyboard to play it. He call it "piano". Can it djent? No, but you can open it up, throw an amp in it and use it as reverb. Sounds good.

hey Glenn, potential VC comment. I'm in a band that I've been playing in for quite a while now, we decided recently to actually ball up and record something substantial, we'd saved up heaps to schedule in some recording time, when it came to it we were on time, professional in conduct and started setting up our gear. myself and my bassist both use about half a dozen amp heads for our recording, i know it's overkill but each one is a specific type of amp with it's own unique tone that when layered produce something i think is magical. when we initially contacted the owner of the studio for arrangements we made sure he had enough room for our amps and such and he said absolutely, "we also have no decibel noise limits in this isolated part of the city so go Hog wild". However when we started to set up with the engineer he was like "the fuck is this?!" do you really need that many amps? well basically even tho we could re setup a single amp for a different layer each time, it would be more time efficient to set them up in 20 minutes (and i mean 20 minutes) and get all the layers in one take rather than 6 (plus the time in between to change the settings, pedals and mics). he's argument was actually "no one layers amp tones they use one maybe two tops" I can name 6 guitarists of the top of my head who use multiple layers. well apparently because i'm not Matt pike or James Hetfield and no one is gonna listen to my shitty record, there's no point in getting a good guitar tone and he recommended i use the in house amp (which was a line 6 spider III head from 200-who-the-fuck-knows-when) over the valve amps i hand made. his argument essentially boiled down to "no one cares about your band and no one is gonna listen to it, so why bother having a good tone?" and refused to record it unless we did what he said. nothing happened after that. I know we aren't going to make the next black album, but if we know how to use our gear well and have not only the permission but encouragement of the owner to make something unique and immense sounding, even if no one is gonna buy it, doesn't that make it worthwhile to put in some fucking effort and creativity? sorry for the long post but i'd love to hear your thoughts hasa diga eebowai from Australia Glenn!!!

I really don’t understand that type of of thinking my first recording session was at my dads home studio and I recorded on top of the line tube amps and nice vintage guitars. I didn’t pay anything and in my opinion if the engineer doesn’t want to let you use quality equipment you would be better off saving up for your own home studio

Wow. sounds like a whole lot of not giving a fuck, mixed with 'i only know how to mix on my specific amp, with my specific settings, so i need to pigeonhole everyone into the exact same sound that i know how to do.' honestly, i think he was just afraid to mix anything new. people would find out how clueless he was at mixing or tracking. it never ceases to amaze me how some 'engineers' can't apply knowledge to different situations, and completely fall apart when they move outside the only recipe they know how to work with. you'll see this a lot unfortunately. we get what we pay for i guess. but honestly, if you were planning on paying that guy anything, you're overpaying. a fucking line 6 spider III was the only amp he had!? tell me he at least had some expensive amp modeling stuff. some Axe fx, or kemper or something? (not that i'm a fan of these, but i could somewhat understand the lack of amps, if he usually focuses on modern modeling). one of my buddies left one of the Spider Valve 'bogner' tube heads at my place for months and that thing sucked pretty bad for a tube amp. my Crate Blue voodoo half stack sounded better than that thing. (i thought he was just dialing it in poorly and trying to play metal on a strat- but no, i couldn't get any good sounds either after weeks. it was just a muddy, brittle mess). he really liked it though, and thought it was really good. i've definitely tried recording people that thought they knew better than me about how to record, and were twats, but in this case you've found the ever increasingly occurring incidence of a gear savvy musician smacking around, what sounds like, a bedroom tracking engineer that somehow got a job at someone's small studio. you make your own amps!? That's pretty awesome!

When I first got an 8 string earlier this year, my little Trump hands could barely reach the 8th string but it doesn't take long to adjust. For strings I use a regular d'Addario 10-59 7 string set and then buy single 80 gauge strings for the 8th. I'm also tuned to DGDGCFAD on a single scale length but it plays nicely! Plus it allows me to use a secret little trick of using a 4 string bass tuned to DGDG and then generating a second track an octave down to fill in the low end. You can't hear the lower octave, but you can definitely feel it. :P

Don't be afraid to go super thick for those extra strings. I use like a .66 and a .92 for mine (though I tune to drop E) but it also depends on your scale length. 8 strings feel natural to play after you use them a little bit - you sometimes have to treat the lower notes as if you're playing a bass (because you basically are) and avoid super low chords because they will always be muddy regardless of your setup.

On a note about my tone preferences for 8-strings: Generally speaking, I prefer a less fuzzy-sounding distortion for tunings that low so that the bottom end rings out super-clearly; folks like Mick Gordon and Pete Cottrell have developed what I think to be gorgeous distortion setups for 8-strings. Other than that, the balance of bass, mids and treble sounds pretty much on-point. I'd be interested to see more on 8-strings from you at some point

.80 seems to be a good starting point for scales longer than 26. Rob Scallon has a signature set of strings from cleartone. I like more heft to my strings so I'd probably go thicker so if you plan to use it for some heavy handed pickers, maybe go thicker. All in all, work around .80

Some advice: play it somewhat like a percussion with some aggressive palm muting & a couple of bends of the string here & there. And there you go, You're on your way. To get a tight thrash on the 8 string(f#), move your hand up just a slight tad towards the neck when palm muting. The tone you need to play with an 8-string is a tight bass, gritty mids, & a bright treble. The mini tube screamer works well for this. But whatever, you do you, Glen. Will be waiting. Chow.
