Complete unboxing and setup of the Harvest Right Large Freeze Dryer with Premier Vacuum Pump.
IMPORTANT: The large machine REQUIRES a dedicated 20amp circuit and a NEMA 5-20 outlet. THIS IS NOT A 220v. It is recommended that you have a licensed electrician set this circuit up for you. Typically it doesn’t take more than just swapping out the standard 15amp circuit breaker for a 20amp, then swapping the outlet for the NEMA 5-20 (looks like a regular plug but one of the prongs is sideways).
Medium machines plug into any standard 110v outlet.

I purchased a large unit myself. I'm was a refrigeration tech over 25 years. Just a note alot of houses like mine are wired with only 14 guage wiring, some are 12 guage. Wouldn't recommend just changing the outlet on the smaller wiring. Personally mine is going in the garage so I've ran a separate circuit with 10 Guage wiring. Have to keep in mind if it is not in an air conditioned or well ventilated area. That the Amperage is going to run higher and could run longer cycle times with higher ambient air temperatures.

Gosh!! Thank you so much for this step by step set up. I got a large harvest right FD with the premier pump and fallowed you along. Currently freeze drying my first batch of bread...i named my machine BUSTER... could not think of anything else. Going to go by ice cream sandwiches now and some berries or something.

Well done! Good clear footage and complete information at every part of the process. My HR manual left me hanging without the information about plugging the pump into the dryer directly. It didn't elaborate on 'all' the settings of the pump for the trial run or the operational use and standby/end process. This was an excellent, fully informative instructional vid! I especially appreciate you taking time to explain how the machine actually works at different points of the various cycles so I know what's to be expected versus something not quite right. I'm sure you have more good info to share so I subscribed!

I just got my new Harvest Right today! They improved the shipping so cardboard pieces never get stuck in there while shipping. Mine came with a pretty clear plastic cover. I removed to screw hose to machine.

Putting mine in tomorrow. Does your NEMA plug have a GFI? I'm wiring in a dedicated circuit for it, and I wonder if it will pull enough to trip a GFI.

Really well done this video thank you. One question how do you check the food for being complete by touch or do you have a tester tool?

Thank you! I don’t personally have a dryness tester, but a lot of people out there use them. I check my food by making sure each tray is completely crumbly, brittle, and a consistent “styrofoam” texture/feel. If there’s any question at all, I will add several hours of dry time.

The seal on the vacuum pump fittings is an O ring. Tightening the brass ring tighter than hand tight is pointless.

As per the instructions from HR, hand-tight is suggested and should be all you need. If there is a vacuum seal issue, they tell you to tighten *VERY SLIGHTLY* with channel locks or equivalent.

Not as part of the initial setup process. You can turn it on manually to test it if you'd like though.

They are about 160 lbs (large machines) so two people can do it fairly easily. Just be sure the table is rated for that amount of weight.

My harvest right is in the garage, and it's very hot. 88 degrees. It's taking a very long time to freeze. Over 12 hours. Is this ok?

Should be ok, but they definitely don’t work as efficiently when they are in hot environments. Your entire cycle will probably take longer, but should finish just fine

Typically the cooler the better, but you don't want it to be freezing. 60-70 degrees is optimal.

I would be interested in knowing how your Harvest Right is holding up? We paid over $4500 and it’s been down for over 10 months now it only worked for two years. I would say that that is not a good Investment I’m not picking on you or your videos. I just am so frustratedThe service from Harvest Right that we should be getting and I don’t think it’s fair for other people to buy junk.

I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had such a bad experience getting yours fixed! That’s super frustrating. Mine is still going strong! I don’t keep mine going around the clock, but I use it pretty regularly. I had one issue where I had to update the software and another issue where I had to replace the o-ring on the demister of the vacuum pump, but both minor fixes. Hopefully you can get yours going again soon!

Sorry to hear you hated it... If something is wrong or not working with your machine, Harvest Right prefers you to call them directly and set up a service ticket. You can do this by calling or on their website.
