Unboxing the AKLOT 15 string harp - cheapest 15 string Celtic harp on the market

3 жыл бұрынMy search for affordable-yet-playable instruments continues, with a new goal in mind this time: to equip my music class with reasonably sized harps so I can introduce 10 beginners to the magic of Celtic harp music.
So when I came across this little 15-string beauty for the unbeatable price of 98,99 euro (plus free shipping and an extra 10% discount, as it happens) I was immediately sold! Post unboxing verdict: they’re very decent instruments, perfect for my intended purpose. Not only do they look and sound surprisingly cute, but their ergonomics are amazing (they’re one of the most comfortable harp models I’ve ever played actually). And a 15 string range is perfect to get started with basic repertoire - not too small and not too dauntingly big either. So just bring on those harp discovery workshops - I am happy to announce that we are equipped and ready 🤩

@@mariannebouvettemusic Would you say these'd be a decent starter for an adult interested in learning the basics of harp/interested in throwing harp music into their own recordings? Been interested in harp for a while, and 100ish quid isn't something I'd be too fussed over.

@@soulofash2112 yes you should definitely consider this. It sounds very decent, has good string tension and standard spacing, very comfortable to hold (unlike many other lap harps) and there’s a lot you can play with 2 octaves (in fact I hope I can release sheet music for this little harp very soon...). Another musician contacted me last month with the very same question as he wanted to start learning the harp and integrate his recordings into digital mixes, and he seems very happy with his purchase - if you use DAW as well I think the possibilities will be endless!

This harp is just right for one learning to play on. Your beautiful nimble fingers just knows how to transform any harp into something magical. The Pros really outweighed the Cons and for the price very affordable. 💜 🎶 🎵

Wow, that's a tiny harp. Cool though. I bet I could build my own. My next harp though will likely be a 22 string. I'm glad to hear you play it though. I wonder about building some smaller harps because of their portability. Happy Harping! 🤓💪

There's a saying that it takes a truly great musician to be able to make beautiful music on an instrument designed for amateur musicians since those are actually quite limiting and the sound isn't as rich or deep as a professional instrument. And you did an amazing job making beautiful music with this. I'd like to see what you can do with a cheap toy harp, like a tiny plastic toy.

Thanks for your demonstration! I recently bought an AKLOT harp but I have never played the harp before. Can you recommend sheet music for this instrument? I really don't know where to search. I can only find books for harps with many more than 15 strings.

J'en avais assez de jouer pour moi toute seule sur ma jolie Camac et je me disais depuis longtemps qu'il me fallait un instrument portatif à ramener au travail pour les enfants. Donc j'ai opté pour une Pop'harpe, sympathique en somme mais peu confortable et le manque de tension me déstabilise tellement ! Je viens de craquer pour la AKLOT on verra ce que ça donne. Il faudra juste maintenant que je me fasse un répertoire pour harpe sans leviers ! En espérant qu'elle corresponde à mes attentes, je vous remercie pour le travail que vous faites, je n'ai vu personne aller aussi loin que vous dans le test de harpe.

Holding the soundbox against the body must effect the sound negatively, or am I not understanding how the soundbox works?

Interesting! Which strings did you use exactly? Are they metallic strings?

@@mariannebouvettemusic No they are Nylon and much thinner, better quality. Clear, Blue and red. No white strings. A supplier in British Columbia, Canada helped me.

Hi there! Thanks for sharing - I want a harp to take around with me for fun, and this seems like a good idea. Did you find any other budget options? Say, under 200 or so? I have a 'main' harp already, so I don't need a "best of both" instrument, just something portable and fun!

Yes it’s a great little instrument and lots of users have confirmed it’s a great choice for beginners or harpists on the go! Sadly I haven’t seen any other finishes available, only this plain wood color. If you’re not afraid of restringing it completely, you may want to paint it yourself and customise it though?

So sorry to hear :( sadly it looks like prices are increasing everywhere and in many sectors, not sparing musical instruments :( I never had to change strings in this harp (and I did get a free set of replacement strings when I ordered it at the time) but they are basic nylon strings. Alternatively I warmly recommend Muzikkon’s latest release, the Céilidh 15, which has an excellent sound (higher quality strings than the AKLOT), is fully levered unlike the AKLOT (so many more possibilities for a complex repertoire) and has fantastic detachable legs with it! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqhkeLOoq9fRY2Q.html

These might be stupid questions but is this a harp or a lyre? I thought this is a harp but I saw it sold online as a 'lyre harp' so I'm no longer sure. Also, is it suitable for a complete beginner?

There are no stupid questions! :) there is a lot of confusion between harps and lyres because of their similarities (string type, string layout, playing style…), and those instruments definitely belong to the same family, but they are different in structure: the harp strings rise vertically to the soundboard, while the lyre strings run parallel to the soundboard. Also their shape is often different - harps tend to look more triangular while lyres tend to look tourner. This AKLOT instrument is technically a harp. Yes it is suitable for complete beginners! Some of my students are happily learning with it.

I didn’t make any changes to the strings. I’ve had this harp for over a year now, it still holds the tuning very well and sounds absolutely fine. Hi Heather, I played the tunes in the video with the original harp strings off the shelf! I thought they sounded pretty decent as they were. If you change yours let me know if you hear a noticeable improvement!

Yes, you can use a free tuning app like Soundcorset on any smartphone and make sure you follow the instrument’s string chart to tune each string to the right note.

Hi Helen, actually I didn’t feel the need to change the string colors. It’s pretty straightforward to locate the Cs/Fs regardless of the unusual color coding! But you could easily replace the green C and the red F, I think Glenluce offers affordable replacement strings in that same range
