Two excellent & attractive little Triang locos, Sam. I happen to own a blue one too & luckily it's also remained in as good a condition as your new one here. I run mine with a collection I've made of Hornby's little four wheel carriages like the one that comes in their Caledonian Pug set. I've varnished the coaches to match the sheen on their locomotive & although the Caledonian blue liveries are a little different in tone, they all seem to blend in well with the Triang single-wheeler engine.

Hi Sam, I have this model. The body has the Number R 553 however the pickup plate has the number R 354. It appears that Hornby used the same chassis for the Lord of the Isles. I intend removing the magnet and here’s why; I previously owned one but I could never get it to run through the points (code100) and i sold it through frustration. A couple of weeks later OOBill did a video on it and pointed out that by removing the magnet and replacing it with lead will solve the problem. It worked for him

Nice pristine example Sam.....nice find. As you know I have a mint one too....she came from a seller in Canada. Remember that ebay seller we spoke about who always asks silly prices? Well, he had one on ebay once with still the original cling-film wrap still on it....brand new for.......are you ready for this.....£1,350.00!!! What a joke! Also, remember I gave you some Rivarossi spring clips. If you fit these to the front of any of the 'single wheelers' it tends to push the back-end down harder which helps the rear wheel to 'spin' as it sticks because of the traction magnet & with that not working on nickel track! It also helps on the points too as the rear wheel has better connection to the track....especially as the pick-up is only on the two wheels. Another helpful trick is to remove the traction magnet and put a heavy weight in the cab. Hope this all helps? Best regards mate, John.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+chambs123 Good god! You could probably afford to re-build the real thing with that sort of money lol ;) I may well give that a go with the front bogey, the maroon version I have is absolutely fine too, which is strange! Thanks for watching anyway, Cheers, Sam :)

Super old loco, very nice condition, yes those inner plastic trays are a peril with paint and small parts. 1971 sounds right as per the data sheet, Tri-ang Hornby were putting nickel plated tyres on at this time. It's nice to hang on to some older versions, you can see how your collection changes over time. Regards, Cliff.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+janiceandcliff Thanks Cliff - I don't think any of my plastic trays have ever actually damaged a loco - but I still hate putting locos in or out of them, it can't be good! Having now run the loco I noticed that the rear wheels don't go round well or appear to sit on the rails well. I came back and watched your video again and noticed that both yours did the same. Would a spring in the front bogie help tilt her further back and get them to touch. Pointless have picks on them if they don't touch. Please let me know as I do love this loco.
@leftin74 Жыл бұрын
Just bought the train set with this engine and 3 matching coaches 2610. Mint condition from a large toy collection that is going up for sale here in Australia. Cost me $400 Australian, don’t know if the price was ok but I save heaps on the postage. Usually have to pay the earth from the UK to Oz which is a bit off putting. Now all I need is some 2rail track as I’m a three rail man myself. But just had to have it after watching your review. So it’s all your fault.

Hi Sam. Love this beautiful engine. You were asking about the star detail on her smokebox door. I'm looking at a double page picture of 123 in Ian Allan's ABC Summer '62 combined album, showing her central star in brilliant silver. She looks fantastic! He also notes that she was restored to her Caledonian livery & returned to service for special use in 1958. Not sure where she is now though.
@SamsTrains8 жыл бұрын
+Eddie Allen Hi again, I've seen a couple of pictures with that star painted silver too - the older tri-ang version actually had it painted too! Hornby does use their instructions for advertising because they figure that if you like what you purchased, you might like some of their other products and the stars are for lend-lease type models (being used by the US, Czarist Russia and the USSR as well) and for hauling Gold Star trains (cadaver trains and ambulance trains) which is why the US and UK refer to those families who lost a loved one in wars Gold Star Families (because Gold Star Trains were used to haul cadaver trains more often than ambulance trains).

The two small back wheels appear to be stuck and are not rotating when the loco moves forward.
@SamsTrains7 жыл бұрын
Hi Desmond, yeah well spotted - it's a very common fault with these. They're not stuck, there's just insufficient weight on them! It's better this way, of course, because the driving wheels need as much of the weight as possible! This never happened when the locomotives first came out, because the track was made of steel in those days, and locos like these had 'magnadhesion' - which used magnets to improve traction. It doesn't work today of course, because Nickel-Silver track doesn't attract magnets! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Those are massively-deep flanges. Some turnouts (points) won't accommodate those flanges in any way. I just had to see how many cars a loco as small as this can pull.

Hi Sam, nice video but I really dont like these loco's, even though I love the LMS. The locos are okay in detail but when it comes to running there not good. Hornby do make a new version but its not great. I dont have facebook so I talk to you in the comments. I know I have recommended this loco before but it would make a real change to see a good review of the LMS Crab by bachmann there are some on Ebay now so please have a look. if im getting annoying just say Lewis :)

+Lewis Shields Hi again, and thanks for your comment - I can understand why you dont like these locos - they aren't too practice, but I just like them for their spectacle! As I say, I've got a Bachmann Crab on my list, so I'll definitely review one some-time soon :) Cheers, Sam :)
@lewisshields27018 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sam the single wheelers look nice but you know there not that good at running, sorry for pestering you about the Crab. thanks Lewis :)
