Fluval's FX series of canister filters are among some of the most well known, and beloved canisters in the hobby. Known for huge capacity, their smart pump and being able to take a ton of abuse, the FX has been a mainstay for larger filtration needs. The problem? They are big, so Fluval has created a new, more compact entry into the series, the FX2! Let's unbox it, compare the parts and get a feel for this new filter.

My biggest beef with Fluval canister filters is the ribbed hose. When it comes to maintenance time it's simple enough to turn the power off, disconnect the hoses from the unit and remove the main unit to the sink for cleaning. That should make maintenance easier, both hoses are left in situ and you simply reconnect them once the sponges and media have been cleaned and because the syphon has not been broken the filter will self-prime once the valves are turned back on. The reality is that cleaning the sponges and media restores full flow and the first thing that happens when you turn it back on is the increased flow through the return hose flushes all the detritus from that hose straight back into the tank. I'm sure that the ribbed hoses allow detritus to build up far more than a normal non-ribbed hose would.

Wanted to let you know that my plants are doing great now, lots of growth. Water sprite has gone crazy, I've also trimmed ludwigia and my moneywort!!! Swords are growing well too. I also set up a 125g four months ago with those deformable socket garage led lights from Amazon and man do they grow plants great. The 80w and 120w ones.

Thanks for this review. Looking at a new, smaller canister for a 40 breeder. If you are not going to use the spray bar, my suggestion would be for the running river tank. If using the spray bar, the new tank would be my choice, with the fish selection tied into a more diffused water flow.

great review. IMO, being smaller also means it more easily fits in cabinets, which was an issue with the larger FX series.

I'm sure some will love it. I would prefer a 'standard' canister especially in that size. My choice would be the Aquael Ultramax series wich includes a pre-filter. Not sure if they're easy to get in the US. Or if sticking to Fluval one of their 400 series.

@@BentleyPascoe Polish made. The Ultramax 2000 is an Oase without the hefty price tag. An easier to clean Pre-filter and runs quieter. The only thing missing is space for a heater. Doesn't bother me though.🙂

Please can I ask for your opinion? Is a deep aquarium better than a more shallow one for rainbows?

Not necessarily, they like more swim space, so if you have a lot of plants in a shallow tank, they won't thrive. The length of the tank matters more than most other dimensions

River tank. But more importantly I dont understand why fx2 over a 07 series of the same same size? My 07 is awesome! and has to fit better. That thing looks like it takes up a ton of space.

There's two things I don't like about the way they rate filters. First size of tank and second gph. The gph part is a sales gimmick. The size of tank should be changed to X lbs of fish in aquarium. The size of the filter should be solely based on the load on the tank. The gph is b.s. because as you mentioned you don't get what it advertised and they know this. The decrease in flow when packed with media is by design. It's meant to be that way. The fx2 is very capable of filtering a 150 depending on the fish load and plant load for that matter. Would I put it on a 40 gallon breeder? Probably not because it more than likely be to much movement for that size of tank without slowing it down. I prefer not to slowing a filter down. The media bags are great for convenience. Personally I don't use them most of the time. Reason being is water follows the path of least resistance. When you fill a media bag and set it in the trey there's always a two inch gap on either side. The bulk of the water will flow around the bag. Some will still go through it but to get the most out of your media water has to pass through it. So companies of you read this. Make a bag that when filled. It doesn't make a cylinder shape. Make ones that will fill a round treys and some that will fill square treys. If you could buy them like that if use them 100% of the time

So the PetsMart app has these built-in games that allow you to earn coupons every couple of months. You can stack all of the coupons on a singular item purchase. So as long as you have a PetSmart account and you do the games in the app that earn all of the discounts. You can apply them to even a larger purchase like a canister filter and save a good amount of money.

Why would you choose an FX2 over a 407? It seems there is a LOT of overlap when you look at the specs. The FX2 does flow a bit more but I think the difference when packed with media would be even less. Their mechanical filter capacity and their tray capacities are very similar too. The round FX2 wouldn’t fit in a square cabinet as efficiently as the square 407. It costs more and uses a lot more power. I think this new filter is cool but I don’t get it. Please explain because maybe there is something I am missing or don’t understand. Well, I do realize the difference between a free FX two and a 407 that you might have to pay for.🤣 I asked this question more from a consumer standpoint.

Thank you, sir. I truly appreciate you considering my question although this shouldn’t fall upon you. I feel this is an area Fluval has completely missed with regards to marketing. They have created an overlapping and confusing spot in their product line without enough explanation to distinguish between the two. Hey, Fluval, are you listening?

I was thinking the exact same thing. I've got several 407s running on 40 gal tanks and they do great. Not sure what the benefit would be going with the FX2 vs my 407s???

Should you put the FX2 on the river tank or the new, yet to be done tank? The answer is, NO. I really struggled to pay attention watching this video, my eye was constantly drawn to the beautifully scaped tank behind you, currently ruined by that sponge filter. That's where it should go.

There's a filter going there, no worries. The sponge is just there to oxygenate as it was being established.

Why is the fluval FX so weird!!!?????!!! Here's what I mean.... Flow is top to bottom to top. Foams are positioned in such a way the flow is outward to inward and then down. So right away you have bypass and there's no way around it because that's the design of the trays. Second. You have course foam, no prefilter because that shape.... Then you go course, fine, media, fine, media, fine. Why. Why why why why..... Why don't they just have the foams oriented better. Why don't they use the prefilter design from the x07 series but make it bigger with a bigger pump? More robust canister for big tanks? I just don't understand some of the design choices on this FX series. There's so many other canisters with less issues in terms of design. ....and all you usually see is people talk about how long they can run the filter without cleaning it. Yeah, because bypass right?
