I think the uncertinity/error should be +/- 0.05 and not 0.01? error = smallest division divide by 2.

Yeah, the 1/2 rule (+/- 0.5mm) is much better for eyeballing a standard metric ruler. If the ruler doesn't have millimeter markings, then you can use the 1/10 rule to estimate the measurement in centimeters, (+/- 0.1 cm) which converts to +/- 1 mm.

I think I depends on what field of science. e.g. My physics teacher says it's smallest increment ÷ 10, but my chemistry teacher says it's the smallest increment ÷ 2.

@@ColonelAstatine and others - hope this helps - the lady in this video does not make it clear but her uncertainty is correct. It is half a scale division with a ruler but remember the other half comes from the uncertainty of your starting point (i.e.0) so those two added together make an uncertainty of 0.1cm. Hope that makes sense and helps you understand it a bit more.

@@Teej_GradSchool Good question. The way to look at it is all devices will have an error on where their zero is positioned, for example a measuring cylinder for liquid volume. However, in this case most people would ignore the zero error there and assume that it is correctly calibrated and just go for half a scale division. But if you determine the volume of a solid cube of material for example, then you should remember the error at both ends of the ruler. I hope that helps. Anthony F-J

just use your smallest quantised step as inaccuracy (uncertainty is something else), so 1 mm in this case. Ur basing the inaccuracy on your measuring device this way and not yourself.

GOOD LUCK trying to read a ruler to 0.01 cm! That increment equals 4 thousandths of an inch. You need a quality dial caliper to read 0.01 cm (=0.0001 m).

The uncertainty of measuring with a ruler is the smallest division, because you have to align the zeroth position, you don't divide by 2. if you don't manually align the zeroth position then its the smallest division divided by 2.

From the intersection of Make-believe Ave and BS Blvd. No way is anyone measuring within 0.01 cm with a ruler. Using 2 instead of 10 would be far more realistic.
