Interesting observations. Personally, I think U3 is probably my favorite in the series, although I enjoy them all. The set pieces and artistic creativity in the desert scenes, boat scene, plane scene, and footrace through the city are second to none. Visually it did many new things that were really creative artistically. It is a blockbuster action movie you can play with fantastic locations. Weaving real world history into well thought stories is something Hennig excels at. I suppose a persons response may depend on what parts of a game matter most to them - game play mechanics or overall story and visuals. U3 created set pieces I wanted to be in, great characters and action sequences that were worthy of the best adventure movie. I remember a friend saying “that’s the best movie I’ve ever played” which is where I think it excels. There are definitely some elements that could be improved as you point out, and you make a good observation that it may be that Druckmann helped with character consistency. Hennig and Druckman’s strengths together helped cancel each other’s weaknesses. However, all things considered, I will take Hennig’s fun adventure ride with some flaws over what Druckmann did to Last of Us 2 any day. :)

Everything you described is in Uncharted 2 tho, but executed better. Not to mention Uncharted 3 is a carbon copy of 2 beat for story beat, right down to the “convoy” chase in the desert and crumbling bridge escape at the end. That’s just lazy and uncreative.
@idahojohn3335

@@jaysony8587 I guess I would disagree. There are similarities in every action movie. - they all have car chases, etc. But in U3 the desert settings were great. The story was great. The horse chase was unique. The half sunk ship escape was epic. Lastly, and especially, the plane scene with the walk through the desert were awesome. The plane escape stands out as unique among games. It was all a fun ride. The desert walk was artistically creative and unique. I guess it is all subjective, like what type of movie a person enjoys, but I remember the events of U3 better - with its Lawrence of Arabia vibe - than I did 2, although 2 was great. U3 was set in places I enjoyed seeing, and I thought did them well.

@@idahojohn3335 I’m not talking about action movies. I’m specifically talking about Uncharted 2 & 3. The game starts out with a flashback before cutting back to present day. Nate and company travel to a different country to uncover an artifact that points them in the direction of a lost city, only to have them be intercepted by the villain and get such object taken from him. They then travel to another location which eventually leads to Elena driving Nate onto some sort of transportation. The transport gets destroyed which culminates in Nate being stranded in a hazardous environment only to be rescued by a foreigner of the area. They then have a convoy chase that leads them to the location of said lost city. Nate has to fight off supernatural beings on the way through the city. The treasure they’re looking for turns out to no be a treasure at all, but something much more underwhelming. Nate’s actions eventually cause the city to crumble, in which he has to escape a collapsing bridge. Him and Elena eventually reconcile their romance again. The end. Which game did I just describe? Exactly. That’s not having “similarities”. That’s straight up plagiarism. You can’t even say that’s an opinion.

@@jaysony8587 That’s kind of the Uncharted Formula though. You can’t plagiarize yourself. It’s like saying Indiana Jones 1 and 3 are too similar. Religious relic. Quest to find it. Nazi bad guys. But that’s it’s formula. James Bond has a formula. Mission impossible has one…For my part, I enjoyed playing 3 probably the most. The way it executed its adventure was memorable and a fun ride to be on, which is what a game should be. If the criticism is that it should shake up the formula, ok. But you could argue that about 1 to 2 in some respects also. A mcguffin that appears to be one thing but is actually something else is kind of Uncharted’s thing. In any case, repeating certain formulas for me didn’t take away from the story it told, the places it took us, and the cinematic adventure it gave. I also like that they base them on real world history and legends. U3 was a legend I hadn’t heard of before.

@@idahojohn3335 Not the best choice of word but you get what I meant. It goes beyond just being similar. There’s a difference between following a template and just rehashing the same game all over again but with a different skin. The two halves feel disjointed. Not to mention the atrocious pacing. The ship yard / cruise ship were completely unnecessary and added nothing to the plot. The conveniences of Nate just magically ending up where he needed to be got ridiculous. So were Talbots inexplicable abilities to survive gun shot wounds & teleport. Its no secret Naughty Dog came up with the set pieces first and just strung them together, regardless of wether it made sense or not. All for the sake of “spectacle”. It’s just an inferior product that luckily got rectified in 4. Glad you got some enjoyment out of it, i guess.

the moment i finished U3 i was sure i practically hated it. It feels just like a U2 rehash with different characters, different locations and a story, but the game itself feels and flows LITERALLY just like U2. They took every single thing in U2 and changed either the person who's in the spotlight, or the vehicle, or the location. Once again Nathan and Elena are separeted because of Nate bullshitting her, once again there's a new character that is clearly going to die, once again we'll be betrayed by someone we trust, once again we are going to take a big vehicle that once again will crash in the middle of a inhospitable place and once again we'll be found by a very unlikely random person that lives in a village conveniently nearby, once again some one we love fondly will die, Nate will go on a rampage only to then we find out they're not actually dead (at least on U2 they actually had the guts to almost kill Elena). Even the order EVERYTHING happens on U3 is practically identical to U2. I know Sully was "dead" in U1 and we found out he wasn't really dead, but the order and relevance of that to the story was WAAAAAY different compared to what happened to Elena in U2. In U1 that happened literally in the second or third chapter of the game, while in U2 Elena almost dying happend that the last chapter or almost in the last chapter. Anyways, U3 was boring, tedious and i really regret spending my money on it

I just played the first three games for the first time, more or less back to back. U3 is probably my least favorite. Everything just felt off. Story felt like a re tread of U2. Enemy encounters were super frustrating and annoying due to cheap spawns getting you shot in the back constantly, not to mention the grenade spam. Some portions of the game really dragged on for me, in particular the ship graveyard and cruise ship segment. The drug sequence running through the streets almost put me to sleep. The lost in the desert section felt under baked. Melee combat was a drag.......

I just played through the original trilogy for the first time and I think 3 was my favorite. The combat in 1 and 2 is very bad, and while it's not great in 3 either, I think it's a decent improvement. The set pieces in my opinion are pretty on par with 2 as well. This is also the first game that has puzzles that actually require you to use your brain instead of just opening your notebook and seeing the solution right there. Yes the story is a mess, but it's not like 1 and 2 had deep interesting stories either. Plus, my takeaway from the first game is that these games are not meant to be taken seriously and you're kind of supposed to suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the ride.

I think the older I got the more i started to appreciate U3. When i first played it in 2011 i wasn't a huge fan and it felt like a let down compared to U1 and especially U2. After playing every game back to back, U3 wasnt that bad or horrible of a game. Maybe misunderstood but overall still an enjoyable game. Not as horrible as i remember it when I first played it in 2011. My only complaint will be the shooting feels off in U3 than in any other Uncharted game

But I can definitely see the criticisms and I must say I hated that fever dream fight sequence. Sure I died a million times 😂 not my favorite but it was the one that got me hooked. Think I thematically enjoyed it more than Drake’s Fortune though.

Recently played all the games and uncharted 3 made me the most annoyed on my play through. I thought maybe cuz I was working up through difficulty uncharted 1 normal uncharted 2 on hard and 3 on crushing but after hearing you talk about how you died within seconds due to an enemy spawning behind you. It made the game super rough to play through. Been playing uncharted 4 and I’m incredibly surprised people can say this is the weakest one. 3 and 1 are not even close to 4s level. And as you mentioned the story feels like it had multiple good ideas but we’re all underbaked. Chloe’s exit from the story is easily my biggest issue.

I really like Uncharted 3 and think it comes much closer to the masterpiece that is Uncharted 2 than people give it credit for. The story was obviously not quite as good but I think it makes up for a lot of its faults with its 10/10 set pieces. Also, this is a hot take but I kinda like the hand-to-hand combat. It’s not supposed to be full of depth or anything. It’s just supposed to be some eye-candy and make sure that you aren’t using a gun to take down every enemy. But I still respect your opinion and am still dropping a like. 😁

I often struggle to decide which is better -- U2 or U3? While U3's storytelling and pacing isn't as good as U2, it has better improved gameplay, better mechanics, and some of the best set pieces in the series...so I'd say it is the second best in the series overall (behind U4 that is ).

Nearly the entire game takes place on the island with VERY little to change it up. 4) U1 has enemies around every corner and it gets tiring super quickly. A nice walking interactive cutscene could help with the U1’s pacing. 5) Nothing to say here. Using the Mp40 against the zombies is the best part of U1. 😂
