While its quality has been the centre of many discussions, few can deny the success of the Uncharted franchise. Uncharted 4 is a strange game because despite improving on many aspects of the series. It is seen as arguably the most divisive. A glimmer of this divide was seen with the release of Uncharted 3 but it was less of a debate over whether it was good or bad, but over if it was better or worse than two. With 4, More began saying that it ruined the franchise, or that it was just terrible. Me? I played it a few months after release and thought it was great. A mature swansong to finish the series, or at least Nate's story. I grew up playing the Uncharted games and 4 felt like it really grew up with me. Offering a more mature story for a now more mature player.
The first Uncharted game had a great concept and was a competent title, with a handful of kinks to iron out. Naughty Dog understood the assignment and delivered Uncharted 2 which is to this day regarded by many as the peak of the series. Uncharted 3 delivered a higher budget but stumbled in storytelling, leading many to be dissapointed. After that, there was nothing for a while. To hold us over we had a few new Tomb Raider games which I have covered on my channel, but many believed that El Dorado would be Nate's last adventure. Fortunately, we were wrong.
Uncharted 4 had been in development since the release of 3, but there were concerns regarding direction, especially after Amy Hennig left. Due to the success of The Last of Us, director Neil Druckmann took up the role of director. I believe this was why Uncharted took a more mature approach, and the parallels between this and The Last of Us are pretty clear from the moment you boot the game. But this change in tone was not at the expense of the Uncharted identity. A Thief’s End feels like a proper step forward without abandoning its roots and the new features here, some more indicative of the time than others, are welcome additions for both myself and critics across the board with 9/10 after 9/10 being thrown towards this game.
In recent years, it seems that the discussion around Uncharted 4 has been one focused on its story more than anything else. This is likely due to Uncharted 4 actually having a story unlike the last few entries, and as a result of the Uncharted gameplay formula being relatively unchanged since its first entry. That said, I’ll be taking a similar approach, focusing on the story and characters throughout, but don’t worry, the gameplay will get all of the love it deserves. I’ll also clarify now that there will be many things that I won’t talk about in usual detail, such as the gunplay, because I’ve already talked about it in regards to previous entries, and I don’t want to retread my steps.
Uncharted 4 Is an interesting game. Because Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End is a massive step away from what the other games provided. Uncharted 4 6 years later discusses these differences and looks at how well it holds up. Uncharted 4 A Thiefs End 6 years later is an uncharted 4 retrospective part of the That Boy Aqua uncharted retrospective series. This Uncharted 4 analysis or uncharted 4 critique or uncharted 4 review will be discussing the uncharted remastered, which features uncharted ps5 capabilities, notably the 60 fps boost. This will also feature a uncharted 4 story explained. If you enjoy the uncharted critique, the uncharted analysis and want more, feel free to subscribe. This video will also feature an uncharted 4 ending explained, uncharted 4 gameplay, discussion of the uncharted 4 secrets.

It’s not the aggregate score though. You literally cherry picked two reviews from a news site of all things and another from a random site. This game is also not decisive at all. I’m confused by these two terrible takes. You’re usually spot on. Not this time.

Yea. While I disagree (I’ve seen a lot of differing opinions on the game), it’s clear people aren’t cool with the thumbnail. I thought cherry picking scores were fine so long as they weren’t fake scores. Since those scores are from critics and not users, I figured it would be ok. Again, I was wrong though. Trying to draft up a new thumbnail and title now. Genuine mistake. Apologies, fellas, I’ll do my best to not goof it up next time.

What I loved about Rafe as a villain was that he was the complete polar opposite to Nate himself. Where Nate’s had to fight for everything he’s ever had in life, Rafe didn’t need to because of his family’s wealth. Rafe believed that he’d never really achieved anything in his life and that finding Avery’s treasure was the solution, which eventually led to his descent into madness (trying to kill Nate and rambling about Nate’s previous adventures) and then to his death.

@@QueenSydon Nadine was a forced diversity hire for the story. She added ZERO value overall to the story. I believe that Rafe was slightly miscast, as imo he should have teamed up with Nathan and Sam in the end, accepting that Nathan was better. I would have loved that turn to the story since I freaking loved Rafe as a character. His acceptance would have made him a mature person who accepts his flaws and gives the stage to the more deserving person. Didn't like the way he goes bat shit crazy at the end and the way they killed him off.

It's not. Uncharted 4 is / was overwhelmingly adored by criticas and fans, and sold very well. It's only "divisive" to the small, vocal minority of Naughty Dog fans who don't like Uncharted 4 was a more mature departure from the original Uncharted trilogies' more Pulpy Action-Adventure roots, and that Nate got his ass handed to him by Nadine. Uncoincidentally, I'd wager the Venn Diagram of fans who found Uncharted 4 divisive are the same knuckledragger man-babies who shit on TLOU2.

I tried playing the chloe and... forgetful character number 2's game, but its just boring. They were designed to be side characters who assist in expanding Nates character, on their own they can't hold a game, especially since from what I played, they had no growth or actual character arc. It would have been cool to see chloe figure out she doesn't have to out perform everyone around her to be seen as a worthy equal or gifted archaeologist, and it would have been really nice to see the other one realise not everything needs to be a fight. Like I said, I only played about half the game, so I don't know what the later late game was like, but I saw no hint in character growth.

My biggest criticism is that Nate and especially Sully were not more suspicious of Sam’s story, they could’ve simply google Alcazar and saw he’s dead.
@ThatBoyAqua
@ThatBoyAqua Жыл бұрын
Yea I think that applies especially to Sully. At least for Nate you could argue that he didn’t really care if the story was real because he just wanted another adventure with his brother, so he neglected fact checking. Maybe Sully had other motivations that made him more trusting, but the game doesn’t mention it (I don’t think).
@redturn133
@redturn133 Жыл бұрын
Sully was definitely suspicious of Sam especially after the auction heist but he lets Sam slide because Sully is just happy to be back in the game same with how Nate is happy to be back trying experience the thrill of adventure/finding treasure once more (it was an excuse), so you could say that they were both blinded by treasure and fortune and Nate specifically was also blinded by guilt from not being able to help his brother during the time he was locked away.

I think it's actually brought up during a drive with Elena later in the game, with Nate basically mad at himself he didn't go search Alcazar up, so he and Sully probably got a bit too swept up in the excitement just happy to be back in the game in any capacity, plus...y'know, brother you've spent the past fifteen years thinking was dead suddenly not being dead does tend to cloud the mind a bit.

Honestly, I think this game was the greatest in the entire series. It isn't perfect, but it's good. I love playing the game, and each replay of the game felt special, no matter how many times I'd play it. And I love Nate's slowly changing addiction to treasure. He has an obsession with treasure at first, but when Elena leaves him, it's a bit shifted. He still has the obsession, but he feels ashamed of driving his wife away. But once the truth is revealed about Sam and his Alcazar story, and once Elena comes to save him, he starts caring a bit less about treasure. And when Nate finally gains the guts to apologize, Elena says she forgives him. And that's when Nate's obsession is drained out with care for family. He just wants to get his brother back. Speaking of his brother... Sam's obsession is a bit more major than Nate's, and that's what I like about him. Sure, his nose may be bleeding, he might have a bullet wound, but that doesn't stop him. He will put his life on the line, JUST so he could get an inch closer to fortune. And when the gang is back together, he still wants to go in the mountain, but everyone, even Nate, argues against him. But that doesn't change anything. Sam decieves them, and tries to go for the treasure himself. Even in Avery's burning ship, he manages to grab a couple gold coins to bring back home. And finally, he changes his mind about leading a normal life. He was very skeptical at first. Once he and Nate get to Libertallia, he even says on the chairs that the normal life isn't for him. But, a gear is finally put in place, and he decides that going for a normal life might not be such a bad idea. Also, I wish they'd bring Donut Drake back.

I actually will debate you that Rafe's story while not the center of attention for the story is more than prevalent enough in every scene he is in and every line of dialogue we hear from him. He has had everything in his life handed to him, it's hinted at by Sully when he says something along the lines of "Running your parents company" and Safe corrects hims stating "My Company" the reason he wants the treasure so badly is because he wants to be remembered by for his own accomplishments which he continually is not remembered or known for. This fear of being remembered as the rich kid who bought everything and had everything given to him is what drives him. It's why he rants at Nate saying "Nathan Drake raced a mad man and his entire army to the steps of shambhala, Nathan Drake found a lost city in the middle of the Rub Al-Kahli desert, Nathan Drake discovered the Fabled El Dorado." This isn't done simply to reference Nates previous adventures it's to tie together that they made Race the exact opposite of Nathan. Orphan Rich boy who was handed everything his entire life VS the Poor Orphan who had to work his entire life to become the legend he is known as. Rate like most doesn't believe Nate actually found those things but it will go down by many that that's who Nathan is and Race didn't want him to be the one who discovered Avery's treasure he wanted it to be him. And of course in the end everything is handed to him by Nate and Sam. Even his death is handed to him as Nate lets Rafes own greed for the treasure and glory kill him.

Thank you for your insights! I was thinking recently a lot about story theme is something like: love versus obsession. And story making definitions: love is about care, trust and respect, it’s requires healthy balanced approach. while obsession is unbalance selfish, alienating and distructive, caused harm and disorder. So hero managed to find love and get his brother out of his obsession, which also reminds plot of helping relative with distructive addiction.

Even the "Lure of adventure" music from the Uncharted 4 soundtrack has that very same whistle. Lure of adventure clearly meaning the attractive and hard to resist quality of adventure. I listen to the soundtrack everyday and Uncharted 4 is my favourite in the series.

Great video to take us down memory lane. One thing i wish you touched on was the ally AI and how they can help you especially in stealth situations where you see them take down enemies and help point them out to you compared to the older entries in the series.

Robert McKee mentioned on one of his workshops, that theme of "lie" is a canon of love story plot. It's always there drama tension around trust, when in climax lie is revealed and relationships seems to be collapsed, but eventually characters confessed to each other and relationships became even stronger, with new level of ultimate trust.

I’m gonna be honest, I was shocked when you kept mentioning that you thought the boss fight was underwhelming. I dislike all gun fight boss fights in any video game. I think 4’s boss fight was perfect, melee battles are the most personal way to end a villain and hero’s fight. I also liked that it was fast pace and had cool mechanics of skin and clothes being cut. It also did have that cool contrast as you stated with how thieves and pirates used to fight. I was hyped the entire battle about how great it was for the story to end with that fight. I do wish it had been like the concept art though (Nate and Rafe fighting ontop of the pirate ship instead of inside) the only time I’ve seen a boss fight like that done horribly was last of us 2. Anyways, great video! Love the points you made! I also agree about the Nadine situation. Great stuff!

My problem with Nadine has nothing to do with her being a "Mary Sue" or "politics" or any of that shit. I just don't like her for the sole reason that she's dull. Her personality is overly edgy, a no-nonsense tough girl mercenary, and she doesn't have a satisfying character arc. If she were just an antagonist, this would be ok, but she's clearly being set up as the next Uncharted protagonist, and Lost Legacy proves how she doesn't work for that.

Uncharted 4 was my first playstation games. So it had a special place in my heart. It has a good multiplayer that was fun and engaging and basically had my favorite game modes also it had an awesome rank system that they sadly dropped. I feel like it's weird that they went for a more mature story by not adding any crazy creatures or the fact that the Style was way too different from how the plot was made.

I have a personal connection to the theme of uncharted 4 because of the games which is beautiful. I wanted to play uncharted 4 almost immediately after uncharted 3 for "just one last ride" and just was not satisfied with the concept of Nate going to get married and living a normal life. Nates fate is exactly that and he too is unsatisfied with it but through the game I learn with nate that maybe a happy ending is enough and there doesnt need to be another go round and to be true... I'm at the same point as Nate, I'm going to be playing lost legacy to have another adventure but I'm really happy that Nate's legend has finally had an ending so like nate, a nice mix between the ending and the adventure

Thanks for an interesting video essay about the game! I was glued to my sofa the moment I started playing this game. It was truly awesome to see the end of Drake’s story. There was, however, one thing that I have to comment on. When you say fauna (the animal kingdom) you surely mean flora (the plants)?

Uncharted 4 and The Lost legacy both left me with 2 big issues. 1) The melee combat was jarringly poor compared to the rest of the excellent gameplay. 2) It ended, my biggest problem was that there wasn’t more and no other game could itch the same spot. I really hope they eventually go through with the Sam/Sully game they teased at the end

Uncharted 4 is my favourite as it removes the monsters and just allows for a grounded (as much as an uncharted game can be anyway) story. It did lack in big events like the plane scene from 3 and the train from 2. Either way it is by far my favourite and the game I see as the best

i mean, i understood rafe's motivations long before he straight up stated them; it seemed pretty obvious between his little comments (like the fake smile dropping when he says "it's my company now" and honestly the whole convo with sully), his smarmy fake charm act, and the news clipping in nate's journal. everything about him screams insecurity + entitlement which leads to exactly his behavior and motivations

My only complaint with the game is that it can feel a bit padded in the back third, an example would be did we need to take the Jeep up three elevators with Drake and Elena. The game also could have tipped the ratio a little more in combat and cut down a bit on the climbing/exploration.

I literally played this game like 3 years ago but got stuck at one part when I forgot how to climb up the rope (I know Im so fucking dumb) and before 2 months I decided to finish it and I remembered what thrill I experienced while playing I finished the game without hesitation. It was also my first game I ever played after getting the ps4 and the feeling to just go back to it was amazing. Personally I think this is one of the best games in the new generation. Thank you Naughty dog for delivering such a masterpiece to us. Thank you!

LOVE your analysis of Nadine, because that was my thought too. Nate isn't trained in combat and a huge portion of these games is Nate's luck and how it influences the story. Through the canonical cutscenes, we see that past bosses were always ultimately defeated by a gun. Nate got lucky up to this point that his scrapping abilities carried the day; it makes sense that a canonically trained fighter would kick his ass.

This game is still to this day my personal favorite game of all time and I somehow managed to miss all of that Nadine discussion as I’d never heard anyone say that about her or those scenes until now and I hadn’t realized how polarizing parts of this game was to the fan base as I’d only ever heard positives from people in regards to the game both in person and online. I personally didn’t feel the absence of the suppressed weapons as intensely as you did nor the absence of the skin differences as I personally don’t use them for very long or that often in the past games and I felt the stealth options in the game left me more than enough avenues for varying gameplay that I didn’t feel I needed a suppressor but it definitely would’ve come in handy in the later Libertalia flooded mansions stealth sections and the section along the cliffed coast before reaching Libertalia especially on Crushing difficulty. In regards to Rafe, I personally felt that he is one of the more fleshed out villains in the franchise, if not the most fleshed out, and that his fight was more engaging to me than past ones in the franchise as well as the theme of betrayal with him being a nice narrative touch where he puts so much emphasis on trust and betrayal that he views Nate as the person who betrayed him (and Sam too for that matter) and that Nate was able to do everything he couldn’t so he feels spurned by the ever mounting feeling of betrayal and his own inadequacy. The parallels are also interesting with Rafe saying to Nate “Nate, he’s gone” when Sam “dies” in the prison and Nate says “Rafe, she’s gone” when Nadine leaves Nate, Rafe, and Sam to die on the burning ship. Rafe says how he never felt anything was earned and Nate managed to do the one thing Rafe couldn’t five times over and Nate arguably gave him his personal biggest betrayal when they had their falling out and Sam betrayed him by working with Nate and Sully while Rafe says how he doesn’t betray his partners in regards to Nadine and how he got Nadine’s men betray her but his reason was so she didn’t leave and betray him (which still happened anyway) and it’s a theme that is used with him a lot throughout the game. Rafe gives Nate “one last chance to walk away” in the Madagascar clock tower section and we’ll never know if he truly would’ve done that or tried to track him down to kill him after his Libertalia treasure hunt ended or not but it added an interesting discussion for his character to me given how quickly he kills the main guard in the jail in the beginning of the game (which is also ironically what led to Nate betraying him coupled with Sam’s “death” as he couldn’t trust him and viewed him as a sociopath.) Nate is everything that Rafe isn’t in that his desire to find the treasure faded before reaching it and he also has a fulfilled life and people to share it with whereas Rafe was an heir to an inheritance who seemingly has no one else but his business partners and hired help so for him to lose them all because they all betrayed him at separate times meant that Rafe ended up with no one right before his obsession to kill Nate got him killed as despite everything, Nate was content to leave the treasure for him and only wanted to get himself and Sam out of the burning ship where Rafe’s obsession was split between the treasure and killing Nate as he spent a significant amount of time racing him to it and his initial betrayal of leaving him to find the treasure alone. Rafe dedicated his entire life in pursuit of one treasure and Nate gave up on that treasure and managed to find four others on his own and Rafe still couldn’t even find his one without the help of one of both Drake’s. In my opinion he’s the most fleshed out or developed Uncharted villain with the only other villain who hates Nate as intensely being Lazarovich but most of the others don’t necessarily hate Nate as an individual but more what he represents such as Eddy or Roman or arguably even Marlowe. On a different and unrelated note, the multiplayer was also amazing to me and is one of the more memorable competitive multiplayer modes I’ve played and the survivals were fun challenges.

My problem with the Nadine fight is that it heavily nerfs the player’s abilities in order to achieve its desired result. Nate moves slower, attacks slower, can’t dodge or counterattack. The moment I realised it was essentially just a cutscene, I put the controller down. I don’t come away thinking Nadine is a badass, I come away thinking “that was bullshit”. I probably wouldn’t have a problem if it was just a cutscene, but the fact that it’s presented as a playable encounter ruined it for me.
