They were allowed to do any flavour, the only thing that was meant to be Japanese, was the steamed buns, which obviously, is the issue, since it is Chinese. They didn't think that India is the same as Japan. They just chose an Indian filling.

With in reason you can? White beans actually hold a lot of different flavors really well. Green tea, coffee, chocolate just plain old red beans are good. They also have pizza buns over there as well as chestnut and probably a few other super experimental flavors because it’s Japan and they do that, a lot.
@melaniemagolan2241
@melaniemagolan2241 Жыл бұрын
I would have made a pizza one. Creative by GBB standards, but relatively standard in Japanese convenience stores, so there is some authenticity. Also since the Japanese word for steamed buns is “man,” a pizza one is a “pizza man” and I just can’t resist that.

I have made a lot Japanese food with Japanese ingredients over the years and even made homemade ramen which took 2 days to make plus steamed pork buns to go on the side of that. Literally the Japanese pork buns (nikuman) I made were simple and delicious with not that many ingredients. “饅頭(manjyuu)” might be the steam bun traditionally eaten at japan, although similar things are found in China too. They even share the same Chinese characters because it originates from China, but it came in Japan at around 1200 A.D. so they did develop differently. Sweet red bean will basically be the only filling since we didn’t eat meat (one of the big difference with the Chinese ones). “酒饅頭(Saka-Manjyu)” is my favorite. Uses Japanese Sake lees to ferment the dough, so there is a slight smell of sake when steamed. Warm and delicious. And no, we do not fill it with pork or curry😂

There used to be a show here in the US called Cupcake Wars. One of the episodes was Chinese New Year themed, and one of the contestants decorated her cupcakes with little takeout boxes and fortune cookies made out of fondant. Watching the judges tell her that neither of those things are actually Chinese in origin was kinda satisfying and it's almost refreshing to know that this kinda crap happens elsewhere in the world.

America has such a psychotic history that tender grievances are many and easy to step on. Chinese American restaurants wouldn't exist as they do today (fortune cookies and all) without some seriously disturbing white supremacists policies. The cupcake baker didn't know that and the judges rightly called her out for it, but I don't hold it against her. She seemed like a very skilled contestant and wasn't acting out of malice.
@kozukiyui7638
@kozukiyui7638 3 жыл бұрын
Agree with hypotalapotamus. I feel she's a good baker. I searched for the video and watch the part where the judge said fortune cookies is a stereotype and he also said "downgrading Chinese culture to Chinese restaurant". The theme was CNY so maybe the judge expecting sometime more to the CNY celebrations instead of a Chinese take out restaurant? I don't know how Chinese in other country celebrates their CNY but in my country or maybe I should say in my family, we don't really use fortune cookies in any occasion? I've been celebrating CNY since little and I've never seen fortune cookies in anyone's house. Not many Chinese restaurant that I've been to have fortune cookies. They normally give us wet tissues or herbal sweets XD Maybe things such as red pockets, tangerine trees, firecrackers, fireworks and calligraphy would be more suitable for the Chinese New Year theme.

imo, its easier to say Asian Week. "Asian inspired week..." too long, too indirect But again there's must be some relation to Asian culture. Remember, chilli is not from Asia but we use it now whole damn lot. I just watched this episode yesterday. I thought something was wrong with the katsu idea. It was the first thing I ate in Japan and what I looked for at every restaurant. I'd totally have ordered it at a ramen place if they had it lol. I really like your take on this episode.

ORRR !!!! It's LKK !!! ....... :) Why do they have oyster sauce in their buns ? It's normally sugar... with the lovely roast pork as a filling... Mm..... Actually, oyster sauce is more Cantonese. Mostly from the coastal area. South Coast. There's lots of youtube videos now about the oysters near Hong Kong. Which I didn't know was so BIG !

I'm Chinese who's highly invested in Japanese culture, and I can say they can be similar to each other to some degree, and I can understand if someone makes a heartless mistake when trying to distinguish the two cultures. But this, this right here, is some second-level shit. No way someone can mess up this bad if they had tried at all.

You’d be surprised! Whenever I tell people I study Japanese and I’m into Japanese culture, they always mention China and start talking about Chinese things as if I’m supposed to know about them. One coworker even asked me if Japanese was a different language from Chinese. 😕

I dunno, my experience of both eating and researching nikuman is that Japanese people are willing to try a lot of different things as filling, beyond the traditional pork or chicken. Pizza sauce and cheese, seafood, curry, taco meat, squid ink, etc... And even sweet fillings like red bean paste, cream, green tea paste, etc. Making the bun into cute shapes isn't unheard of either... Different convenience store brands have done Hatsune Miku buns and Hello Kitty buns. I'm sure there's even more varieties that I'm totally unaware of. That being said, yes it would have been nice if they had chosen a different type of food that is more unique to Japan. Taiyaki or an pan would have been good choices. Or at the very least, use the Japanese words for what they were making besides just "buns" and maybe explain the history/cultural context a bit more.

For those whose don't know, the TV presenters are actually two brilliant comedians. I'm sure nephew Nigel knows them but he doesn't seem to have told Uncle Roger! Look Noel Fielding (the mighty boosh) and Matt Lucas (little Britain).
