UNCONDITIONAL SELF ACCEPTANCE or USA is an important exercise because as anyone in recovery knows, addiction to any substance or behavior generates a host of emotions, many of them quite negative, that can undermine your feelings of self-worth. When your self-worth takes a hit, remember one of the core values of SMART Recovery: YOU ARE NOT YOUR BEHAVIOR. Starring Ted Perkins.
We recommend that you check out the writings of Dr. Albert Ellis, who inspired many SMART Recovery tools including USA. Especially THE MYTH OF SELF ESTEEM.

I am not my addiction. I have an endless possibility to learn and change. I am not my past. I accept who I am and I am 100% responsible for my choice.

Whatever works for the individual. I personally enjoy living in Reality, though. Weakness is for the weak. Ownership is where strength begins.

alongside these tools I'm learning I need to learn to increase my ability to tolerate discomfort...I have given into urges too often, instead of waiting it out, distracting those addictive screams in my head. key point in my recovery

I thought about giving this program a look, even though I do not struggle with drugs and alcohol. I think I needed to hear this. I was feeling like a failure, because I don't have a job. No, I'm not.

I am so impressed with the quality of the content and presentation of these videos! I love the awareness of the importance of self-acceptance. I recently came to the realization of the importance of unconditional self acceptance and those of us who often find themselves in shameful states of being. We are worthy of love and acceptance no matter the conditions. I am so happy to see more and more Smart Recovery content on KZfaq. I am new to the community, but have connected with the values and philosophy and will be doing the facilitator training online starting today! Thanks for sharing some powerful tools for recovery.

I always felt very ashamed & guilty towards myself & that i humiliate myself when i slipped & called a person who is not doing me well. Now i heard that here. The only question is how to re-programm my inner reaction & how to actually BELIEVE it - that i am worthy no matter this, that i have nothing to be ashamed of & instead of feeling bad about myself/of beating myself up for this slip learn to truly innerly accept & love me.?.

Great video and I echo the sentiments already expressed. A point for improvement: "03:59 control your only responsibility to 04:02 yourself is to do your best and truly 04:05 believe that your best is good enough" This thing about "doing my best" is unhelpful and sets me up for failure. "I had a red hot go" "I gave it a sincere shot" "I authentically want to give it as good a try as I can" These give me more room to be 'human' and flawed.

Overall this is quite good but I was very surprised to see the self-negating concept of "character defects" included in the defintion of USA. Not only is that term taken from AA, but it is also rooted in Christian belief in original sin and other such nonsense.

D recall mention of character defects. Let me check.

@@SmartRecoveryUSA The phrase "character defect" was used at 5:01 in the list of self acceptance talk. The quotation marks seem to mildly indicate that the term is inaccurate and should not be acceptable. Also, the quote says ".....because there is no law in the universe that says I can't". This seems to reject the notion of "character defects". I may be wrong but don't hold it against me. I won't. Peace.
