I found that track density thing out years ago. The reason the silence before sound makes the sound perceived louder is because the human ear is basically like a self adjusting mic. Your ears actually get more sensitive during silence, so if there's a sudden sound, you actually hear it louder than if you were in a noisy environment and your ears had their sensitivity lowered because of it. This is also the reason the transients on certain instruments can sound really harsh/loud when recording JUST the instrument on it's own but once it's dumped into the mix, it's loudness sounds different. One more reason to listen to takes in the mix before applying any significant compression/EQ (IMO).

David i just tried routing my whole track to a send channel and basically putting fabfilter saturn on it(the send channel) mixing it with the original around 56 % ( I know it really depends on the mix you are working with) i excluded the lows and SATURATED heavily the mids and highs .It resulted in greater density and over all perceived loudness i concluded that by bypassing and unbypassing the send channel.I leave this here so you all can try this,it really makes a difference if your track needs it ofcourse.

I lowered the gain knob on the lows in saturn so i am routing only mids and highs to the original.That must be noted. Play around with the band with until you find the spot for your track,at least i did that.

I really like FabFilter's Saturn. Its my favorite saturation plugin and the inbuilt transient designing function is just awesome. Not sure why you would want to have it on a send though as it has a mix knob on all bands and the master.

That is interesting, I usualy use parallel saturation (or non-prallel) only on a certain track /or bus in my mixes to controll the dynamics a bit, also to put some "life" in it, but TBH I havent tried to do that on the 2Bus. Imma try it latter today with my latest mix. I'm assuming this will crush the f*ck out of my overheadz and Hihatz but ima set the saturation to be more suddle with more action at the mid freq. content. (where the human hearing is more sensitive) i'll share my experience later. Fine idea, thanks for sharing it. And ya, Saturn has a mix knob built-in, no need to route anything. Cheers!

MixbusTV Yes, David, I'm sry for that link. I didn't knew it will cause difficulties. I've deleted the link and the old post and I will post my question again. I'm curious to "hear" what you have to say about it, exept that it is subjective and depends on the material. I hope you can answer, regardless of what happened earlier. Cheers! BTW Folks I've tried slapping a Saturn on my 2Bus and David is right as expected - you will want to mix within it from the beginning.

In other words... Use all your favorite saturators to get the RMS levels up in comparison to the transients.

Another great one for my video library. Thank you, David, for giving your thoughts on the subject. I've noticed (in that video where you were checking whether or not KZfaq and Soundcloud does normalizing on uploaded track) that your example was laying around -8 LUFS on the WLM meter , which normaly is were my Master sits too, so I assumed that im doing fine. Yesterday tho, while I was comparing my latest mix with a commercial record I've found my master sounded as good as the reference but it was bloody quiet, compared to that hard clipping above 0db, -6LUFS Commercial Song. :D I have printed another master at the same value -6LUFS and it sounded..well lets say good enough (theres no obvious distortion etc.) I wonder if your clients in Trap, HipHop and EDM genre often ask you to push their stuff up to -6LUFS, were the momentary LUFS can go up to -3 and the track is basically clipping most of the time. Isn't that bloody loud? I know that 1st - it is subjective 2nd - depends on the material, 3rd - it's my (engineers') decision to make, but If you can share your experience, that will be much appreciated I imagine not only by me. BTW I use Waves WLM meter too.

MixbusTV Thank you David for your detailed answer. Im sure there's no easy answer to that. I appreciate you shared your precious opinion about that loudness madness that is taking over these days. Also i've read somewere long ago that -8 continuous power of the signal is kinda standard for Rock music. (meaning its a sweet spot between goodsoundin & loud master) Well..now I can keep calmly aiming at my sweet spot level with minimum gain reduction. Thank you again for clarifying that for me. And for being honest. I really appreciate it! You are THE MAN!!! :)

You all just think you have enough harmonics but you don't .David i have a great suggestion for a quick video in which you explain all the different ways in which you can add harmonics to a sound.That would be great . Thanks for making me realize something again. I feel like i just have not read the "harmonics lessons" till the end ahah . Have a great day !

All the current ways i know are: Distortion Saturation(which is kind of distortion but not really ,missing the crucial knowledge here,all i use it for is reduce peaks and enrich harmonics) And all in all that is what i know. Are there any other ways ..hmmmmmm :?

Loudness scales haven got low frequency measurements in their algorithms; ITU BS.1770-3: Loudness K weighted relative to full scale. LKFS.. They’re talking of gating silence in loudness measuring.

And a further proof of our "aural sensitivity to tamber" a mother will know it's Her baby crying on the first waaa! The Snare some how (even for non musicians I think) is the median, how loud everything around that is is how loud we perceive the original source to be. Then the vocals, if you can barely hear the singer it sounds like the band is really loud. It's a Art blending/balancing frequencies and transients, a different Art than making Music.

David, if the goal is -16 LUFS, should we ignore the true peak as long as it's under -1 and not peaking? Thanks, R
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
I have a recent video about true peak, released this past week. It's safe to say if your ceiling it's set at -1 you're probably safe if also you're not squashing the mix with a limiter (which for such low LUFS, you probably wouldn't) but if you DO have ISP and the meter tells you, IF you don't want ISP then you should adjust. I personally ignore them anyway (and so 90% of professionals) at any given LUFS but yeah

Thanks again for the knowledge you share. I have a question regarding gain staging and mixing. I do most of my work in the box, and i use vst plugins to play instrument, so i was wondering if you usually reduce the plugin output so the track hits -18dbfs before converting midi to audio or you convert and then use a gain utility or trimmer to reduce it to -18dbfs since most of vst plugging play hot signals? Thanks

I'm new to working in DAWs (I use Reaper). My question probably sounds stupid but here goes. In Reaper, when I put a limiter on the master bus (say, JS Masters Limiter) the limiter ceiling is in RMS or LUFS or is it stupid that I think it may be either of those? If it is by chance it is translated as RMS, how do I work the plugin while keeping LUFS in mind? I'm so confused now 😅😅

I hate loud but because I am a dj as well I can't match the volume of the tracks I play. What the hell they use a jet turbine or something? I've tried every possible way the only thing I think they could do it's clipping plus 20 dB the converters as I don't hear any dynamics in those loud tracks it's not limiting.
