Have you ever worried that you looked either “too sexy” or “not sexy enough?”
You are not being superficial if you have - you are being honest. Gender stereotyping regarding a woman’s sexuality and self-expression impacts her presence, perceived trustworthiness, and workplace opportunities. Beginning in childhood, girls are conditioned to manage other people’s perception of their sexuality - and this continues into adulthood. Covert sexism is so entrenched in our culture, language, and beliefs that oftentimes we don’t even see it.
In her provocative and illuminating TEDx talk, corporate attorney turned life and leadership coach, Lora Cheadle, challenges our outdated and harmful assumptions, and the behaviors that proceed from them, around women’s sexuality. She explains the time has come to overcome our discomfort with women’s sexuality and to normalize a full range of female self-expression. With a mic-drop ending that will leave you equal-parts stunned and inspired, Lora provides a path forward that allows us to individually and collectively identify and acknowledge our judgments about women’s sexuality and avoid acting on them.
Lora is the author of the award-winning book FLAUNT! Drop Your Cover and Reveal Your Smart, Sexy, Spiritual Self and top-rated podcast, FLAUNT! She shows women how to move beyond soothing the symptoms of burnout and to recognize and resolve the root cause, which oftentimes is betrayal. Whether that betrayal comes from a partner, changes in one's body or health, or the sudden realization that you’ve been living a life that was not your own, Lora helps individuals, high performing teams, and groups of women leaders break free from the burnout/self-care cycle, come back to life again, and create the personal and professional satisfaction they crave. She leads corporate workshops and training that help participants stay healthy and happy in their chosen career for the long haul.

advocate, and burlesque dancer. Her mission is to helps women overcome the devastation of betrayal - whether by their body, life, or someone that they love - so they can reclaim their power, own their worth, and confidently engage in life again. Named a Top Influencer by Success Women’s Conference, she has spoken on numerous stages, including the Women Economic Forum in New Deli, India. Her work has been published in Thrive Global, Yoga Magazine, and Om Yoga Magazine, among others.
As a lawyer turned burlesque dancer, she has been discriminated against based on her perceived sexuality. After winning her first case ever, the judge saw fit to call her into his chambers and berate her for being too sexy and bold enough to win a case against an experienced, white, male attorney.
It’s time for women to be bad asses about female sexuality, and to stop
equating intellect, virtue, and worth with perceived chastity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What a powerful talk. I have to admit it had me thinking about the harsh truth, that we as women also do a lot of this judgment. As a parent of a girl I find myself saying “you are not wearing that” trapping myself and my daughter in a world of rules that only reinforce the status quo. I hope your work can shine a light on what solutions you see possible. Great talk, that will resonate with me for a long time. Thank you!

It's insane how difficult it is to walk that line. I remember starting in a new workplace in my early 20's and being super excited and friendly, talking to everyone etc. Cut to a month later and being told by one of the other girls that everyone thought I was flirting with all the boys! I was so outraged but it's also stuck with me to the point where if I'm going to a new branch where there are a lot of people I'm polite at best. No more talking freely to everyone with a huge smile. Such a shame.

She is speaking some real truths here and weirdly enough I think Hollywood has a lot to answer for in terms of how they portray their femme characters. Sigh... sadly, this is so true. I think that once we as women realize that it's up to us to define ourselves, and to quit listening to those who are determined to misjudge us, that we will rise.

I think it's because the men are less competent that it happens. I've never seen a man at the top of his game be or say disparaging things to a woman about her appearance in an attempt to purposefully cut her down. Those who are at the bottom of the ladder though...

Agreed. And if we stopped judging both those who did and those who didn't, perhaps we'd all normalize out and nobody would think a thing about it!

I don't think it's easy for women OR men to embrace their s3xuality in a way that isn't stigmatized or stereotyped
