In 1990, American professor and poet Frances Mayes felt an irresistible urge to buy a derelict 300-year-old property. She transformed it into one of the most famous villas in Tuscany, attracting a constant stream of tourists, thanks to her bestselling memoir about restoring the house, called "Under the Tuscan Sun." The book spent more than two-and-a-half years on the bestseller list, and later became a popular film. Mayes talks with correspondent Rita Braver about her unexpected success, her adopted village of Cortona, and her latest book, "See You in the Piazza: New Places to Discover in Italy."

Good to see Frances profiled here. She was one of my writing professors in college in the early ‘90s when she started to follow her Bramasole dream. Lovely.

As a single, adventurous woman who regularly follows her heart, I confess I'm a little sad that the real story is about a happily married couple moving to Italy (vs. the way the movie portrayed things). HA! Either way, bravo!

I thought the same thing! It inspired me tremendously! But it was indeed great to see the actual, beautiful villa! :)

I loved the book. But, the movie fell short, in my opinion, by the inclusion of the love affair. The movie didn't need that; the story is captivating enough without it.

29 years ago! Seems like yesterday. The book is wonderful and if you only saw the movie give it ago. The movie in its own right was also terrific. A classic and wonderful for this summers reading. I am now going to check out her other books. If you have a book you will never be alone or bored! Enjoy....

Renovations done by people who don't consult with knowledgeable architects before taking on major work can do a lot of structural damage. They could very well have seen the whole house collapse. Great to see that they succeeded in saving this beautiful property.

I know!! I'm shocked, too! Under the Tuscan Sun was a memoir, wasn't it? I remember she mentioned in the book the she "ended a marriage that wasn't supposed to end and was left with a grown-teenage daughter" or something.

Yes, in real life, was was divorced. Her ex-husband is her daughter Ashley’s father. But she’d been in a relationship with Ed for several years by the time she began writing her book. Her real life divorce happened a very long time ago.

Regret watching this... Reading the book right now and would prefer having Diane Lane in head when imagining the picture. The real person and the real story have much less charm than the fiction ones
